Nosferatu Bestial question (LSJ?)

Does the Nosferatu Bestial's ability to employ retainers during untap count as an instance of "playing cards from the hand in the normal fashion"? That is, can it be canceled with Direct Intervention? I suppose it probably can't, since Pier 13's effect is very similar and that can't be Direct Interventioned. thanks, Josh a beastly thing
