FYI: Here's the list of V:TES events White Wolf (that is: I) will be running at Gen*Con Indy 2003: Thu 1230-1430 TCG00238 $1.50 Rapid Thought Fri 1000-1900 TCG00236 $9.00 Final North American Qualifier Sat 1000-1900 TCG00233 $9.00 North American Championships and Shadow Twin Sun 0800-1000 TCG00237 $1.50 Rapid Thought For Rapid Thought format rules, see http://www.thelasombra.com/variants/rapid_thought.txt If you plan on playing in the North American Qualifier or in the North American Championships, bring a deck lists. Deck lists will be collected from every player prior to the start of the first round of play. The Shadow Twin tournament is a standard constructed deck tournament that runs parallel to the Championships. It is for players who don't qualify for the Championship. Both the Championship and the Shadow Twin tournaments are run on the same ticket, however, so you can go ahead and reserve your ticket even if you aren't yet qualified to play in the Championship (and then use the ticket for the Shadow Twin tournament if you don't qualify in Friday's qualifier). -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Why is it $9. It has always been free before. Seems like a pretty major jump? Especially since the rapid thought can only be $1.50. If this is to cover some insane prize support or something why don't you just keep it. Paying $9 to play with cards I already bought is a little extreme. -- Aaron The Nosferatu Stuff

But I think what the organizing team did was maybe increasing the prizes (one or two free boosters for every participant and a super cool main prize) and therefore the entry fee is now $9. To be honest the European Championship was never less than 10 Euros. > Aaron > The Nosferatu Stuff > > -- Andreas Nusser www.vekn.de a.nu...@vekn.de

Your position is more than just a little extreme. It's only nine bucks, man. That covers fees to the convention for space, helps offset prize support (you do realize WW takes a huge whack in the nuts on prize support right?), and not incidentally is a discouragement to randomly disruptive bozos -- not that a convention would EVER have any of those, oh no. Want me to spot that $9 to you so you can play and we don't have to hear the rant while we're all there? -- How do you know if your keyboard was made by the KGB? ... There's no ESC.

Rapid Thought tournaments don't occupy as many slots as full 3+F tournaments. Contact Gen*Con to request that they change their per-hour rates. [ quoted text not captured ]

I've only been to GenCon once, last year, so this is an honest question: do we have to shell out the $60 for the convention pass, and then pay for individual events on top of that, or is it an either/or? David Cherryholmes hoping for the either/or....

Both. You pay for the pass and buy tickets to the individual events that you want to participate in. http://www.gencon.com/display.aspx?file=indy-registration [ quoted text not captured ]

AU$50 is not unattainable, i guess, yet a very very big entry fee if you ask me. someone else mentioned that it keeps people who would otherwise just monkey around from entering. i think the whole qualifying process would mitigate that somewhat for the championship event. still, i hope it goes well..... salem domain:canberra http://www.geocities.com/salem_christ.geo/vtes.htm

That's hardly negligible when it's a continental championship and people would have to come from literally thousands of miles in various directions. That is, you're right, it is unfortunate that cost is likely to be a barrier for some people who would like to participate in these championships. But it's unavoidable, I think, since White Wolf can't really afford to pay airfare and hotel for everyone who qualifies to play. Convention fees certainly add to this problem somewhat, but on the other hand they are also a natural gathering point for gamers (especially in the case of GenCon, the biggest gaming convention in the US, though I don't know if it's also the biggest in the world). Josh say, aren't the cards kind of expensive too? ;-)

salem wrote: > is it such a good idea to have the championship attached to a > convention that charges such an amount? It balances with the "good idea" aspect of holding the championship where a lot of players will be anyhow (and at a place where a lot of non-V:TES players can see the game being played). Asking the players to travel cross-continent just to play in the championship would be cheaper ("just" air fare), but the players would get much less for their dollars. It's a trade-off. > i know i would be unwilling, not to mention unable, to hand over cash > of about AU$100 just to play in a/some vtes tournament(s), even if > there were huge prizes. This doesn't factor into the decision on WW's end at all. [ quoted text not captured ]

If I were going to rant, it would be directed towards GenCon, not White Wolf. IMO, shucking out $60 bucks should get me into whatever games I want to play while I'm there. In my case, that's $60 bucks for the privelage of walking around the Con, since I don't intend to play anything but V:TES. I guess I just don't get why they hit us both ways (well, I think I get why, but it's unsupportable). David Cherryholmes Duke Radiology P.E.T. Facility (919) 684-7714 david.che...@duke.edu

Sorry. >this basically says 'to play in the championship, you need to qualify >AND have large cash reserves' You had to have that anyway just to get to Indianapolis. the $70 on top of airfare plus hotel room plus... etc., is really meaningless in comparison. >so the north american champion will really be the champion of those >with large wallets, rather than just the champion vtes player. It is a near-certainty that he would also be the champion V:TES player even if everyone who couldn't afford to go also got a free ride. This is a typical dodge used by many, often seen in politics as well (relating to campaign finance), and it doesn't hold any more water here than it does there. The people who are good -find- a way to play. The people who aren't find excuses. >so this means $29 or $32 (US monies) to play in the championship. >approx AU$50....? > >i wince when i have to pay AU$10. Suggest better job. >AU$50 is not unattainable, i guess, yet a very very big entry fee if >you ask me. Well, this is a luxury. It's about as meaningless and unproductive as a luxury can possibly be, and so is the whole damn convention, for that matter. Complaining about the price of luxuries is mostly pointless.
