[ORIGINS] Draft event

To Whom It May Concern, For the last two years, I've been running a Sabbat War draft event at the same time as the Origins Qualifier event, for those players who have already qualified and want a "different" event to play in while the qualifier is going. (Keep in mind that there will be a sanctioned constructed tournament EVERY DAY at Origins this year.) Last year, as well as the year before, we had 10 of 13 already-qualified individuals choose to play in the draft event. Q1: If you are already qualified, would you prefer SOME kind of draft event, so that you could play in the draft event instead of the qualifier? [Yes/No] Q2: Assuming it was the same price as the last 2 years -- $25 for 10 packs -- which set would you prefer to draft? [Set Name here] Sabbat War *still* seems the most reasonable to me; it worked quite well the last 2 years and there are cards that people actually *want* to draft. Note also that this event would be RATED this year, if that makes any difference to you. Thank you for your input. If you have any questions, please ask. I'd probably prefer less money and less packs--8 for $20.00 seems more reasonable to me, and any set seems good. Sabbat War is probably the most cohesive (and has more good stuff to get, as opposed to Camarilla), but a 50/50 Bloodlines/CE draft seems like it would be much funnier. Sabbat War is the last set I'd want to draft. I've drafted it too much, and I'm sick of all the crappy cards. Instead, I'd like to do CE draft, or CE + Bloodlines (high comedy), or CE + Anarchs. Especially CE + Anarchs, 'cause it's new. Also, why would it be $25 for 10 packs? That's like $90 per box. Couldn't the cost be cut down by ordering through Potomac or something? Also also, I'm totally up for MORE drafting, in addition to the draft tournament. It doesn't even have to be a draft tournament. I just wanna draft for the sake of draft. To that end, I'll be bringing a box of Anarchs with me. If I should bring more, let me know. :) - Ben Peal, Prince of Boston fu...@mindstorm.com

How do you draft Vampire? I read the Tournament website rules on it and just found that confusing and would still like to know. (I thought I understood what was going on until it got to talking about oldest cards) (I'm a Brit so obviously I won't be there)

[ quoted text not captured ] Table Draft: A player is chosen to be the alpha player. Every player flips the top two cards of his or her draft stock face up to the middle of the table. All players are afforded an opportunity to read the cards. The Alpha player chooses (takes) one of the face up cards. Then the player to his or her left. And so on clockwise around the table until the player to the alpha player's right takes a card. Then the player to the alpha players right take a second card. Then the player to that player's right takes a second card. And so on counterclockwise around the table until the alpha player takes the last remaining card as his or her second card. Then the player to the left of the alpha player becomes the new alpha player and repeat the process with the next to cards. The "Oldest" card concept is only used when someone exceeds the time limit on choosing a card. In that case, the default choice is made automatically for that player and the draft continues. The default choice is defined to be: "choose the eldest card". The cards are ranked eldest to youngest clockwise from the two cards that the alpha player turned up. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Thanks -think I've got it now. The "oldest" is just the last card to have been turned up (still on the table)? Do you get to look at your whole booster first? I presume that you can't change the order (would want the rares to come up all at once -first?)

I figure that CE, however, has a lot more cards that folks have *way* too many of already ("Yaa. I draft another J.S. Simmons to go with my previously drafted Rumors of Gehenna...") and SW has more stuff like, say, Disarm and War Ghoul. But I'd be happy either way. Most of them involve drafting vampires seperately from the regular card, although there are various schools of thought on that. Around here, we used to (back in the days of $13.00 Jyhad boxes) play Jyhad booster draft. We'd each get, like, 6 packs and sit in groups of, like, 4. We'd open a pack, take out the 3 or 4 vampires, draft them, and then continue till we all had all the vampires. Then we'd draft the rest of the boosters, after knowing what vamps we had. Other folks seem to like drafting where you draft library cards, and then draft for vampires, but that always struck me as being more likely to result in you getting screwed. Some folks like drafting where vampires are just regualr cards, so you can draft, like, a cool rare, or a good vampire, and assume that everyone is gonna take enough vampires to make a crypt, but this strikes me as an accident waiting to happen ("Uhh, my crypt consists of Chester DuBois, and, um, that's pretty much it. Is that legal?"). [ quoted text not captured ]

[Yes/No] I'm not yet qualified, but I'm currently seriously considering to go for a draft tournament rather than trying to qualify. I like the very competitive level of play at Origins, but I can have that any day, and I've come to love draft :). > Q2: Assuming it was the same price as the last 2 years -- $25 for 10 > packs -- which set would you prefer to draft? I would like one of the following: SW, SW versus CE (half of the methuselahs chooses the one and the other half the other), CE+BL (since it's greta fun and even more based on improvisation - and you see weird stuff done with ourferiors :) ). Anarchs is new, but there's such a limited amount of variety in the set that I don't need more of it, really. > Note also that this event would be RATED this year, if that makes any > difference to you. I'll readily admit I'm pretty fond of the Bloodlines expansion, and I look forward to using the BL cards combined with a 'normal' set such as SW or CE. I really don't want any more too-common Anarch cards, and might step down if Anarch draft is the best offer in town. As I mentioned, I think that Camarilla vs. Sabbat (CE/SW) is a neat option, and I would like to hear the opinion of other draft-enthousiasts on this. Regards, Patrick Columbus, OH

[Yes/No] Hells yeah. I'll speak for Trey Morita as well and say that he too wants to play in a draft instead of the qualifier at Origins, since he rarely posts to the newsgroup. > Q2: Assuming it was the same price as the last 2 years -- $25 for 10 > packs -- which set would you prefer to draft? [Set Name here] Sabbat War > *still* seems the most reasonable to me; it worked quite well the last 2 > years and there are cards that people actually *want* to draft. I guess I'm with Ben and Peter in thinking it should be possible for the packs to be a little cheaper, although that's not really any kind of sticking point for me (I don't mind paying $25 for 10 packs, although I do think 9 packs is generally sufficient for draft). All Sabbat War, although I am certainly familiar with it, would not be my favorite thing to draft. For most fun value, I'd totally dig either CE/Bloodlines or SW/Bloodlines (or both + Bloodlines). We did do some of this at TotalCon this February and it was hilarious. As Ben said, Sabbat War - while I admit it may have more "still highly desirable" rares than Camarilla (Disarm, War Ghoul, Powerbase Montreal, Black Metamorphosis, vs Derange, maybe Protected Resources, maybe Gregory Winter, Tension in the Ranks) - also has a ton of chaff in the rare slot (Ablative Skin, Aggressive Tactics, Bauble, Bestial Visage, Blood Brother Ambush, Cardinal Sin: Failure of Mission, Code of Milan Suspended, Cull the Herd, just to go through the Cs). :-) Anarchs will also still be pretty new, and may be more "practical" than Bloodlines for drafting with CE or SW or both. But the fun-factor of Bloodlines appeals more to me. Re Patrick's question about SW vs CE drafting: We did that for one tournament in Maryland a few months ago and it was indeed fun - the Sabbat really did feel a lot more combat-y than the Cam decks. But to me, it's not as interesting/fresh/weird as incorporating either Bloodlines or Anarchs. > Note also that this event would be RATED this year, if that makes any > difference to you. I totally dig it being rated. I would have played even if it wasn't, but being a sanctioned event is tres cool. I'm hoping to finally get enough sanctioned limited games to be listed in the rankings soon. :-) Oh yeah, and I (and probably Trey) am also up for random impromptu drafting with Ben and Peter and anyone else who's into that kind of thing. One Anarchs box might be enough, though, Ben, unless we're going to want to do multiple drafts using Anarchs, or expecting a lot of people to want to do it? Josh origins, origins, everyone loves origins

I completely understand: wanting to draft sets that have desirable cards for collection purposes, how doing this rules out Anarchs. But. In terms of play, while Anarchs seems to have some deficiencies, it also has good generic cards, especially masters, that make decks more playable. So, I'm just saying if the emphasis is on a playable environment and doing something fresh, Anarchs makes sense. Course, maybe SW v. CE makes as much sense. Though, CE, for me, would fail the standard of wanting collectible cards as much as Anarchs does. And, it seems like people don't mind doing something wacky, which means Bloodlines. (Agaitas is broken.) Again, I've got no horse in this race, just trying to provide information on what we've run into with different things.

I would probably be up for trying some "Foolish Draft" (tm) of Ancient Hearts plus Final Nights boosters. We could order some FN from Potomac, or maybe Ben could bring it (I hear he has connections)? Would people want to actually do this, or would we be better off doing AH + something else? (Note that AH + FN packs would be very low on certain staples like "cards that require disciplines other than Quietus and Serpentis", and "cards that are good" (like Blood Dolls and Wakes).) Or we could try AH + DS + FN - that way at least there would be four bad disciplines to try to use. And the DS packs would be uber cheap. :-) Josh if it ain't dorko, it ain't draft
