Name: Metanoia Cardtype: Action Discipline: Auspex/Dementation [dem] Choose any Methuselah and a card type among master to make him or her lose 1 pool, action modifier to make you gain 1 pool or combat to make this vampire gain 1 blood. The chosen Methuselah shows you 3 cards at random from his or her hand. For each card of the chosen type shown, apply the associated effect. [DEM] As [dem] above, and you may discard 1 card shown of the chosen type. [AUS][DEM] As [DEM] above, but the chosen Methusaleh shows you 4 cards at random from his or her hand. A card to bring new options to the Malkavian/!Malkavian that are too often forced to bleed at stealth. By guessing correctly, you make take advantage from the other Methuselah's decks and gain blood against a combat deck, gain pool against a bleed stealth deck or make lose pool to a heavy-master deck. It helps you also to gain table control by controlling the methuselah's hands. The card can particularly strong when you play more than one in the same turn. Metanoia Action Auspex/Dementation Choose a Methuselah as a action. Choose a card type from Master, Combat and Action Modifier. The chosen Methuselah reveals 3 cards at random to you from their hand. If you chose Master, the Methuselah burns 1 pool per Master card revealed. If you chose Combat, the acting minion gains 1 blood per Combat card revealed. If you chose Action Modifier, you gain 1 pool per Action Modifier revealed. As above and you may discard 1 card revealed of the type you have chosen. As above, but the Methuselah reveals 4 cards at random. That seems a better structured cardtext. Retired Baron of Sydney, Australia, 418

But much longer. What about: Name: Metanoia Cardtype: Action Discipline: Auspex/Dementation [dem] Look at 3 cards at random from any other Methuselah's hand and choose one: for each master card, he or she burns 1 pool; or for each action modifier card, you gain 1 pool; or for each combat card, this vampire gains 1 blood. Choice must be made when announcing the action. [DEM] As [dem] above, and you may discard 1 card of the chosen type. [AUS][DEM] As [DEM] above, but look at 4 cards at random from his or her hand. Designer's intent is clear enough to avoid superfluous and redundant wording. What about the card itself? Prince of Paris, France Ratings Coordinator, Rules Director

> Juggernaut1981 wrote: > It seems too good for a free card. > If I perform an average on decks I know and against which Metanoia is good, I don't find it "too good". A deck with 20 masters out of 90 cards will have 1 or 2 master cards in hand. At superior, you'll make your prey loose an average of 1 pool. A combat deck with 45 combat cards out of 90 will have an avg. 3-5 combat cards in hand. At superior, you'll gain 1 to 3 blood. A bleed stealth deck with 30 action modifiers will have an avg. 2-3 action modifiers in hand. At superior, you'll gain 1-2 pool. All values are given as random hands in random situation. With bad luck, you may pick up no card at all from the chosen type. With extreme luck, you'll gain 4 pool, make your prey loose 4 pool (master-heavy decks only, and these kind of decks gains lots of pool usually), or gain 4 blood against a combat deck. This is quite good, but there's a random part. The trick for decks using Metanoia would be to use cards to give a methuselah the "optimal" hand for Metanoia, but it's quite a hard work. And it requires some smart moves to optimize the results. In any case, I don't see in which situation it would be "too good", please explain. And making it cost blood would wallpaperize it. The only "good" aspect is the discard, but as always, the card replaced may be worse for you, so I don't think it's worth a blood. Prince of Paris, France Ratings Coordinator, Rules Director

Discard the card bit is a bit too strong part, IMHO. You are looking at 4 cards out of someone's hand, and discarding one of them. That could be pentex, grapple, touch of clarity, DI, almost anything, really. I would draw a parallel with Revelations, which costs a blood, just discards a card, and does not have potential to give you pool, blood, or make anybody lose pool. Looking into hand and discarding is a powerful tool, and i feel it should be costed appropriately.

Juggernaut1981

Why I think it is too powerful for its cost... Revelations - Directed only at your prey - Costs 1 blood - Gives you the chance to discard a card - See your prey's whole hand Pulse of the Canaille - Allows you to see everyone's hand - Costs 3 blood - Gives you no ability to discard cards Metanoia - Directed at any player - Lets you see about 50% of their hand - Gives you the chance to gain at least 1 blood - Discard a card that would significantly impact your game - Zero cost So yes, Metanoia, while requiring , is too powerful for a free card. You underestimate too much the random parts of the cards. Kindred Spirit is free, not random, so if the card isn't worth asking if it is a good alternative to KS, it won't see play. Imo the card would only be used against masters / action modifiers. Looking at someone's hand and be able to discard an Aid from Bats from overe there, and gain 2 blood? Yeah... that's just some more they'll taste. I assume a combat deck can inflict more than 1 damage per card it has (the only exception being weenie fortitude). Against an action-modifier deck, gaining pool quite OK. Of course, it's an interesting strategy against S&B decks. But, come one, which decks would inflict you damage.. and use action modifiers? Una, B/S, Vote with stealth. Against a master deck, this card gives an interesting non-deflectable pool damage to dementation decks. Compared to - Revelations: this one has no stealth. It doesn't give full knowledge of the hand. It also requires DEM or AUS DEM to discard a card, instead of aus. - Pulse of the canaille: il might get played. Metanoia would almost always be played (choosing Masters) against prey, which is OK. it can be interesting to play it cross-table for blood (combat), or against anyone for pool. But then, hey, wait! You get some extra hints if you know whom to choose (Owl Companion, Aura Reading, ..) I don't know how you made your comparisons, but Revelations has a better chance of getting rid of a card that impacts your game (such as an action card - bum's rush, a reaction card - deflection) than this one.

Thanks Pascal, I see it the same way. > Pascal wrote: > But then, hey, wait! Seriously, when has anyone EVER seen pulse played at inferior? As for this card, its ok, though I am not sure if I would play it over just another KS unless I am playing multiacting deck.

A major part of this is that Malks already have almost the most blood efficient ousting strategy: Dem-Obf S&B. Enhancing other strategies is good, but I think this would be too efficient at also enhancing Dem-Obf S&B. Retired Baron of Sydney, Australia, 418

I think you should change it slightly: : yours. : your : your You can't compete with sup' KS.

Juggernaut1981

It allows a S&B deck to defend itself better against prey-bloating and prey-rush (removing things like Villein, Tribute to the Master, Immortal Grapple, Aggravated damage, etc). I honestly think it would be a no brainer to bump out a 60-card KS S&B to include 6 copies of this card to basically cull out the cards my prey might want the turn before I plan to oust them. Seriously, though, I'm with the rest here: it doesn't seem that unbalanced at all. It's inferior to Revelations, I'd say. Pretty interesting, and definitely random enough to warrant Dementation. Only one thing: Do you choose the card type before looking at the cards at random, or after? This affects the balance of the card loads. Anyways, I really like that AUS would increase the effects of the card instead of DEM. "Oh, to the Hades with the manners! Easy, because Revelations is significantly more costly. It only gives one benefit, the ability to discard a card, and I have seen it played regularly by Malk S&B. It disposes of Archon Investigation, Flicks, Rushes, Protected Resources, Havens/Fames, Con Boon/Ancient Influence/Voter Cap and it costs 1 blood. So why should a card that can potentially give 4 pool, allow someone to discard and do it as a unrestricted action cost less than Revelations? Even though it doesn't allow you to discard flicks it should cost a fair bit more than nothing. Especially considering the secondary benefits of the card (up to 4 pool gained for a action you can use to set your prey up for an oust). Retired Baron of Sydney, Australia, 418

I mean, does it really matter if Klaven has 4 blood instead of 3, as long as he has at least 1 blood to act on next turn? Weenie DEM only has 1 card that costs blood (Mind Tricks), malkavian bleed with auspex has 2 (telepathic misdirection and madman's quill). Yeah, you can add Touch of Clarity / Delaying Tactics, but you woulnd't play more than 2 of these, I guess. Honestly, I think the blood cost argument is invalid here. And then, when playing a b&s deck, would you really play a card that would give you 4 pool (if you're extremely lucky) than a card that would give you 1 pool and would have your prey burn 2-4 pool ? Revelations costs more, because it is more powerful. Or, turn it the other way around: This one costs less, because it is less powerful than Revelations.

Juggernaut1981

I'd say because of the positive benefits (while random) are greater than Revelations. #1: Usable on any player. this allows you to target your predator and protect yourself backwards as well as setting up ousts forwards. #2: There is a chance to get a blood/pool benefit back. With Vessel, Villein, etc there is always a value for your minions blood. And I doubt you'd be gaining less than 1 blood on this card very often. The fact that it can give you pool is another argument for why it gives you more benefit than Revelations. #3: Why use it instead of KS? Actually the point is to use it and THEN Kindred Spirits. You'd use this card at least once, see what cards they have, light bleed to check if there was a flick you missed in the other half of the hand and then lunge for the kill. It's the same motivation for using Revelations in a KS Malk S&B. You are attempting to know what is there and clear anything dangerous. So this shows that the card is at least if not better than Revelations, and should cost at least 1 blood. Retired Baron of Sydney, Australia, 418

I am with Jugger on this one... Revelations , i feel, is a staple card on how cards that look in hand and discard should be made. This one has more restrictions (not seeing entire hand, cannot discard reactions), but offers MORE in realistically over 50% of the time. Plus, any type of direct pool gain from action cards is rare, and generally an effect reserved for rares, or very specific sect/cap. So, my suggestion would be to either remove the discard clause, or make the card cost something...

Ankha

> Pendargon wrote: > Plus, any type of direct pool gain from action cards is rare, and generally an effect reserved for rares, or very specific sect/cap. > Wrong. See Kindred Spirit, Dark Mirror of the Mind (cap > 8 isn't very specific or rare), Transfer of Power, Legal Manipulations. *Even* if it was the case, does it mean it can't be done? Comparison is good when used to see if the card's power is in line with other cards or the game. Compared to KS and Legal Manip/Social Charm, this is not a bleed card. You can't use it to gain pool and make your prey loose pool. Compared to Transfer of Power (a pretty weak card), it's not a referendum (a good thing), but doesn't steal pool. Compared to Dark Mirror otM or Art Scam etc., it requires some disciplines and requires luck to gain more than 2 pool (need to draw more than 2 master out of 4 cards). It's a polyvalent, random card, that requires a little bit of intuition. Prince of Paris, France Ratings Coordinator, Rules Director

Kindred Spirits = +1 Bleed with a gain 1 pool (at superior) Legal Manipulations = +2 Bleed with a gain 1 pool costing 1 blood Social Charm = +1 bleed with a gain 1 pool (at superior) for no cost Dark Mirror = Gain 2 pool as a +1 stealth action with 8+ cap requirements Transfer of Power = Gain 1 pool from potentially everyone (including cross tables) requiring vote-control or maybe enough table support The cards it most closely resembles are: Cull the Herd: Takes out allies and retainers, costs 1 blood, actions any player, gain 1 blood for each ally/retainer discarded Precision: Name a card, force someone to discard just that card. Shattering: Chi, Anarch, 1 blood, look at a hand discard one card as a action on any player Sleight of Hand: Chi, discards equipment only, looks at the whole hand, costs 1 blood Truth of Blood: Bleed plus discard 1 card if blocked. Aus-Qui which is a relatively rare combination. (3 vampires in G4-5, 2 distinct vampires in G2) Vaticanation: Trujah Most of these cards cost a minimum of 1 blood. Most give no secondary benefit like blood or pool gain and any cards that do give secondary benefits are very limited. So yes, when you compare LIKE cards with like cards, your card is overpowered for its cost. Retired Baron of Sydney, Australia, 418

Much stronger than Twisting the Knife too. Shattering is maybe the best card of those, and there's no random part in it. I think someone should properly playtest this card - or at least try it out. I think I could, probably... Someone else? I still think this is one of the better cards Ankha's been conjuring up. Hello! I've tried Metanoia out once already in a Serenna the White toolbox with midcap Malkavians from G5, and I'm hoping to get some time to do another run with the deck today. Last time I was trying to oust a Giovanni Location deck, with the guy who gains hand size with every location. I was confronted with a handsize of roughly 15 cards, so taking a pick with metanoia from there was hard as hell, and the card just didn't work too well. Also I was struggling with the lack of stealth in the action. We all agreed that even in the best case scenario the card isn't really that powerful. What I've been thinking is adding a second card type to choose from for superior level. That would make the card really a bit more plausible, but still not too wondeful compared to Kindred Spirits. Often I found myself looking at 2 reactions, a combat card and an action modifier when I was trying to find masters. I hope to have more luck with my prey today and make some more observations. Anyways, I really liked the card, and guys around the table were positively interested in it. The power level just wasn't on a desirable level as it is. Other issues I might have: the deck really isn't spesifically designed for Metanoia. The deck is originally a Haunting/Blood denial wall, and at the moment I'm replacing the blood denial aspect with Metanoia. It might work better in a bleed/toolbox kind of deck with a bit more stealth. "Oh, to the Hades with the manners! It's no big. It's an interesting card, and I love to see how it goes. I did play another game with the same deck today, and got to stay safe with a stealth-bleed in front of me, and G2-3 Tremere at my back. So the order was: Serenna (that's me!) -> G2 !Malks -> Adana de Sforza -> G5 Ventrue Prince Grinder -> G2-3 Tremere toolbox The funny thing is that I only drew one Metanoia in the whole game, even though I have 6 of them in the deck. I was thinking that I might get a sweet amount of pool with Metanoia out of the Malks, but never had them ready before I got the oust. And, to be honest, I really just wanted to weaken the Malks to make sure Adana survived long enough for me to sweep. Thanks to help from others this happened, and I ousted two player in one go, and eventually won the heads-up with the grinder. Metanoias were discarded, though. There was no use to even try them against the Grinder, and bleeds really helped me oust him. This also applies to the beginning of the game. I really had no problems with the poolgain, and even though there was always a danger of being bounced, I just had to keep my cool and refrain from bleeding often enough. So yeah, there were really very little need for me to play Metanoia instead of just plain bleeds. If I wanted to deal pool-damage, I could just as well bleed. I also get the edge. If I wanted to look at the other player's hand... Well, I could never know for sure, and most of the decks in the table were very straight forward. I could always guess (correctly) what they had in hand. Poolgain was easier with Powerbases and wakes, blood was a bit tricky but Obeah, Hunting Ground and the like kept me alive well enough, and ousting was just a wee bit easier with bleeding. What I find is that the card just isn't worth the effort, unless you have access to untaps, or plenty of AUS dem minions. Even then you really could use your actions more effectively. I think adding another type of cards to choose from for superior level might be a good addition. So, AUS+dem version might say: > As above, but choose two of the following: action modifier, master or combat card. > This in addition to what has already been said. Really might make it more worth the effort. Like this I really can't see many decks playing it. Anyone else have something to add? "Oh, to the Hades with the manners! I'd still like to see the option for two different effects in one action to make the card a bit more versatile, but it might work that way too. It's just that equipments and allies are a bit random in the mix: it's not like you could be able to predict your opponent is hiding a kevlar vest in their hand. Political actions are a bit easier pick, though - this card really has potential to hurt master heavy voters more than others. Then again, it ain't really a problem.
