Can Haymaker be played by a blocking minion after the acting minion has chosen their strike? Is Haymaker itself a strike card and therefore cancellable by Anticipation?

Haymaker Warning: Spoiler! Play after range is determined. Only usable at close range. Not usable if this minion played a Haymaker last round. This minion's initial strike this round will be strike: hand strike at +1 damage, and the opposing minion's initial strike this round gets first strike. If either minion inflicts more damage than the other this round, that minion gets an optional press this round. "Play after range is determined." This is not a strike card. This card should only be played before strikes. It's a card that would give you a strike, but it's not a strike card. It's more in line with Zip gun. Warning: Spoiler! Before range is determined, put this card on this minion. This card represents an equipment card and doesn't count as a combat card while in play. This equipment is a weapon, gun. Ammo cards cannot be used with this gun. It does 1R damage each strike, with an optional maneuver each combat. Bearer takes 1 damage during strike resolution when striking with this gun, but only once each combat. This card is kept as normal equipment and is not discarded after combat. "Is Haymaker itself a strike card and therefore cancellable by Anticipation?" No

So then you mean "yes" to my question? > Can Haymaker be played by a blocking minion after the acting minion has chosen their strike? That'd mean it's playable anytime after ranged is determined and before your strike is chosen. Is that right?

Borrelstein

Yes, that is the window for playing Haymaker according to card text. The wording 'initial strike' also seems to imply that you can not keep it as a surprise for additional strikes.

Is that right? > No, the strike phase is not the same as determining the range phase. Phase 2 is range determination; phase 4 is strike. See the rulebook for more info; here is the snippet: Warning: Spoiler! Combat Sequence Combat occurs in a series of one or more rounds. Each round of combat has seven steps: 1. Before Range: Play cards before range is chosen. 2. Determine Range: Use maneuvers to change the range to close or long. 3. Before Strikes: Play cards before strikes are chosen. 4. Strike: Announce and resolve strikes. 5. Damage Resolution: Prevent and mend damage. 6. Press: Use presses to continue into another round or to end combat. 7. End of Round: End-of-round cards and effects are played here. Play Haymaker at the end of phase 2.

It does not say it must be played at the end of phase 2. It says it must be played after phase 2. It does not say it must be played during phase 3. What prevents it from being played in phase 4?

To be clear, this was answered on Discord, but posting here: Haymaker is played during "Before Strikes." This step was codified by BCP. Haymaker's older wording template put it in this phase, as "after" always means immediately after, which is now the "Before Strikes" step. Haymaker is a strike card as it provides and sets your strike (to hand strike +1 damage). Because it is a strike card is can be canceled with Anticipation. To add to kschaefer point here. Window "after" and "before" windows in VTES always designate a precise moment, they don't allow a whole period. "before block resolution", means just before block resolution, not anytime before. Same here for Haymaker: after range is determined is that exact moment, not any time after. Nature A card that locks in a strike is a strike card. For example, Aid From Bats is a strike card, even if played during maneuvers. Cards that provide a possible strike but leave the choice open (Zip Gun, Hunger of Marduk) are not strike cards. So indeed, > Can Haymaker be played by a blocking minion after the acting minion has chosen their strike? > No > Is Haymaker itself a strike card and therefore cancellable by Anticipation? > I would have said yes, although I suppose a confirmation there would help
