We found several asnwers to that form several eras and several Rules directors: > > Rulebook wrote: > 2. Determine Range > Each round of combat is fought at either close > range or long range. Vampire A wants his ghoul retainer to inflict 1 damage at long as in cardtext, the mention "inflicts 1 damage on the opposing minion each round of combat during normal strike resolution at close range" doesnt exists like with other retainers of that type (Wolf Companion, ...). > > >On the other hand all other retainers inflincting damage at long range specify clearly that they do ranged damages (Murder of Crows)... > > >Is a Ghoul retainer able to inflict damages at long range without any weapons? > > No, it inflicts 1 damage during the strike resolution, which has no effect at long range. > www.vekn.net/forum/generic-v-tes-discussion/75623-ghoul-retainer?start=12#103386 Annkha ruling yes in 2021 None of the four cards mention to deal R damage at the time the ruling was amde (Darkling trickery does now) 2 each have basically the same wording. Beatial Vengance (ruled working on all ranges) has the same woridng as Ghoul retainer (ruled to work only close) Darkling Trickery (Ruled at the time to work at any range, now reworded to deal R damage) had, at the time of the ruling, the same wording as Thougts betrayed (ruled to work only on close) I think we need a clarification here how this is supposed to work. Thoughts Betrayed Only usable before range is determined on the first round. Opposing minion takes 1 additional damage in the first round of combat during normal strike resolution. Opposing minion cannot play any strike cards for the duration of this combat. Darkling Trickery Press, only usable to end combat. Maneuver or press. Only usable if the opposing minion strikes with a weapon that inflicts ranged damage. That weapon inflicts no damage. The opposing minion takes 1R environmental damage during normal strike resolution. Bestial Vengeance Requires a Laibon. Only usable before range is determined. Choose a retainer on this Laibon. This combat, this Laibon is immune to frenzy cards and the opposing minion takes 1 damage during strike resolution if the retainer is ready. A vampire can play only one Bestial Vengeance each combat. As above, but for 2 damage. Ghoul Retainer Ghoul with 2 life. 1 strength. During the initial strike resolution each round, the Ghoul Retainer inflicts 1 damage or may use a weapon not used by the employing minion (or another retainer) that round (either before or after). This is not a strike, although it does count as "using" the weapon.

a ruling/clarification would be appreciated.

I feel like there's an easy way to rule this, and that's: "Card text." Strikes (that aren't Dodge or Combat Ends) are only effective at short range. Environmental damage is not a strike, and will deal its damage regardless of range. QED. If an Environmental effect deals damage that's restricted to a particular range like Hatch the Viper or Wolf Companion, that should be determined by card text. This is why i've been braying about getting rid of (R) Damage. it makes other things clearer if strikes are the only things that are inherently affected by range without card text. having Environmental damage be R damage or not unnecessarily muddies the waters. Every Gun should be reprinted as "Ranged Strike: Damage" instead of "Strike: R Damage," and we can get rid of an exception to a rule and legacy holdover that we've been clutching to for decades. > Hatch the Viper. > Retainer with 1 life. > The employer can prevent 1 damage each combat. Hatch the Viper inflicts 1 damage on the opposing minion each round of combat during normal strike resolution at close range. > As above, but it inflicts 2 damage. > > Wolf Companion > Animal with 2 life. > When the minion with this retainer is in combat, the opposing minion takes 1 damage during strike resolution at close range. > As above, but Wolf Companion has 3 life. >

Seconding self biased's point, especially since there are even cards which deal enviromental damage when a range is determined, but after strike resolution step (like Drawing out the Beast). If enviromental damage would care about range, imo Drawing out the Beast would need to work only at short range - as range is set for the entire round. Combat and its various substeps are hard to learn already, and I don't see that enviromental damage working on any range would cause any loss of tactical depth Warning: Spoiler! ani: Only usable before range is determined on the first round. Frenzy. During this combat, opposing vampire gets +1 strength, but he or she cannot use maneuvers to maneuver to long range, cannot use presses to end combat and cannot use equipment. A vampire may play only one Drawing Out the Beast each combat. ANI: As above, and the opposing vampire takes 1 unpreventable damage during the press step each round.
