Greeting Fellow Mathuselah,
We had a discussion in our playgroup abbout Rotschreck and non-strike agravated damage.
As i read the card in its current Writting i undestood that you could use it in the following situation:
During your predator turn he bleeds you, you manage to block it but he uses a Dawn Operation.
In the First round of combat you use Outside the Hourglass and try to use Rotschreck.
But as i searched the rulings i found :
Cannot be played in response to aggravated damage done from "environmental" sources. [RTR 19961113]
But as you open the link to that rulling you read:
"QUESTION: 7/01/96: Why can't you play Rotschreck in response to
aggaravated damage dealt by non-strike cards (like DBR, Pulled Fangs,
etc.)?
ANSWER: You can play Rotschreck in response to aggaravated damage dealt
by non-strike cards."
So i need a clarification, is it possible to use Rotschreck when a non-strike source, like Outside the Hourglass, is the source dealing it?
Name: Rötschreck
[Jyhad:U, CE:U, Anarchs:PG, BH:PTr2, KMW:PB, LoB:PA, Third:PTz]

Master: out-of-turn. Frenzy.
Put this card on a vampire when an opposing minion attempts to inflict aggravated damage on him or her, whether the damage would be successfully inflicted or not. Combat ends. Since the vampire playing OtHG inflicts 2 (aggravated due to Dawn Operation) damage, Rötschreck can be played.

Oh, can I get confirmation that this ruling reverts [RTR 20041202] ? Or had that been reverted already at an earlier point? Or did I misunderstood the RTR? Thanks in advance.

At that time, there were no other way a minion could inflict damage during combat than by using a strike.
The RTR points out that Rötschreck doesn't work with damage not inflicted by the minion, such as Pulled Fangs.
So the whole Rötschreck section of the RTR is outdated and should be ignored.

I don't think Rötschreck can be played on the basis that Rötschreck is an out-of-turn master and thereby is only playable by the non-acting player which means that if the non-acting player plays Outside the Hourglass while under the effect of Dawn Operation (played by the acting player) the impulse goes back to the acting player to either take the damage or prevent it not giving the non-acting player the opportunity to play Rötschreck. (in the scenario given)
I could be wrong in my understanding of the priority system, but if I'm not this means that technically the only time Rötschreck can be played is when the non-acting player has the impulse which means:
1)while at pre-range if and when the impulse is given to the non-acting player which earlier in the pre-range step has played a damage (sourced from the minion) inflicting effect and the acting player hasn´t yet taken or prevented the damage.
2)before the non-acting player announces/declares his minion´s strike but after that the acting player has announced/declared his minion's strike.
3)after both players have had their minions announce/declare their strikes and after the acting player plays an effect that modifies the damage to aggravated.
Now if the acting player for example played OtH as a response to the OtH of the non-acting player then the impulse would go back to the non-acting player and in this case (whenever the acting player does anything else in the pre-range step than taking the damage or preventing it) Rötschrek would be playable.

I don´t think the RTR stands any longer in regards to Rötschreck and a new ruling and reversal of the RTR seems relevant.

I don't get your answer. Pulled Fangs damage is inflicted by the minion (card text) is it not?
> Only usable at close range at the end of a round of combat in which this minion successfully inflicted more damage than the opposing vampire. Not usable by a minion being burned or going into torpor.

AFAICT the card text was already that at the time of the RTR (2004), and has not changed since.
Digging a little bit more, it seems that Pascal ruled already in 2011 that you can play Rotschreck on OtH ( www.vekn.net/forum/rules-questions/9048-domain-of-evernight-outside-the-hourglass-vs-carrion-crows-rotschreck?start=6#9123 ), but this was already a direct contradiction of the 2004 RTR, which carefully errated Rotschreck to do the exact opposite... Not sure if this was intended or a lapse.
If the 2004 Errata is reverted, and you can play Rotschreck on non-strikes, that's okay. Just want to make it clear for future searches ☺︎

I don't understand why you couldn't, since the cardtext itself makes no mention of strikes. All that matters is that the damage is inflicted by the minion and is not environmental.

This is wrong. If the vampire is acting during another Methuselah's turn, you can control the acting minion and still play a master OOT.

Even in that scenario, if the acting player has nothing to play in the "attempt to inflict damage" window, the impulse goes to the other player so they can play their card in that window.

Rötschreck was reprinted since then, but the errata doesn't appear, so let's consider the 2004 RTR about it is no longer valid.

Don´t agree with you because it limits who can play it and when...obviously if you twist the scenario for it to be incorrect so you get to be right...would have been better to expand on it ...but anyway

The above insinuates that priority is followed and impulse is/can be passed back and forth, which I think is great, but was as many others under the impression damage had to be handled before passing impulse...happy to be wrong and see this align with the strike/damage handling.
Am I understanding it correctly that the pre-range damage and prevention is handled exactly the same as one would with the strikes?
meaning that there are 2 sub-steps to the pre-range step
1) play and resolve pre-range cards/effects (excluding damage) following priority and pass impulse per normal back and forth.
2) resolve damage if any is inflicted during the pre-range sub-step 1, again following priority and pass impulse per normal back and forth.

The ruling on KRCG is worded as damage is applied even if combat is ended prematurely and that insinuates that prevention isn´t possible to be played, [ANK 20180104]
Might need to review the other OtH rulings to make it all clear.
> KRCG wrote:
> The damage is applied even if the combat ends prematurely (eg. Illusions of the Kindred)

After reading the forum post it is unclear to me if that is what Ankha actually is saying there or not...it isn't clear whether prevention is not chosen or not possible...also seems no final conclusion and ruling was reached in regards to whether prevention can be played or not after a combat end is played in the pre-range step for the OtH damage.
I would say no damage is inflicted if it is to align with how it is handled during strikes which seem to be the ruling we are getting. (a good one I think)
On the other hand, this would mean that a combat end resolves differently for OtH than it does for Weather Control and would mean that the pending damage inflicted wouldn´t be handled and ignored.
Regarding Rötschreck being an out of turn master and it might be difficult to play it with dawn operation and outside the hourglass: keep in mind that Rötschreck doesn't care about who controlls the vampire that attempts to inflict aggravated damage. It might be played by the methuselah controlling the vampire that would take the aggravated damage, or by a methuselah who doesn't controll a vampire involved in the combat at all.
Concerning why the damage of outside the hourglass mght be inflicted: the difference to strikes is that the card resolves immediately. Strikes do not resolve until the strike resolution phase. However, since Rötschreck ends the combat before the strike resolution phase, strike damage is not applied (but attempted since the strike was chosen). Outside the Hourglass creates a more complicated situation, since the "attempt" is carried out immediately and not delayed like a strike. That's why it's handled in the way for ending the combat prematurely with Illusions of the Kindred in the post you linked, and that's why it might be handled the same way for Rötschreck, but I guess we need to hear Ankha on this.

I think there are some possible cases to consider here.
1.)
Player A does an action and plays dawn operation.
Player B blocks and in prerange plays Ooth and rötschreck
2.) Third player plays the rötschreck
3.) player A does an enkil cog rush, plays dawn operation, Ooth and rötschreck.

I think you misread the post you are referring to. That was a specific scenario meant to highlight the issue with illusions of kindred. It doesn't imply that Ooth damage is unpreventable. Just that the vampire in that case chose not to prevent it.

After a good night's sleep, I've decided to reconsider:
The 2004 RTR says:
>
> Rötschreck (Rotschreck) is only usable during strike declaration when a strike that deals aggravated damage targets a vampire (may still be played after both minions have announce their strikes). In particular, it is not usable for effects that resolve when played (which includes most non-strike effects), like Pulled Fangs under a Dawn Operation.
>
The idea behind is that non-strike cards that inflict damage resolve immediately and inflict their damage immediately. "Attempting" to inflict damage with those cards is somehow meaningless since they always succeed.
On the other hand, damage-dealing strikes are played then resolved is another step. "Attempting" to inflict damage with those cards has a meaning: since there's a gap between the declaration and the resolution, and since the strike may not resolve (because the opponent plays a strike: combat ends etc.), the minion is attempting to inflict damage and may not be succesful.
So "attempting" implies (and that's what the RTR says) that a strike is involved. I don't want to introduce the notion that damage that is inflicted right away (Outside the Hourglass, Pulled Fangs) goes through an "attempt to inflict damage" window which brings nothing but complexity.
Therefore, Rötschreck will have from now on the following clarification/errata:
Rötschreck
Cardtype: Master
Out-of-turn. Frenzy.
Put this card on a vampire in combat when an opposing minion attempts to inflict aggravated damage on him or her {with a strike} (whether the damage would be successfully inflicted or not). Combat ends. This vampire is locked and sent to torpor. This vampire does not unlock as normal. Burn this card during this vampire's unlock phase.
The consequence is that the 2004 RTR is still valid, and I revert both Floppy's and my ruling:
www.vekn.net/forum/rules-questions/9048-domain-of-evernight-outside-the-hourglass-vs-carrion-crows-rotschreck?start=6#9123
www.vekn.net/forum/rules-questions/9048-domain-of-evernight-outside-the-hourglass-vs-carrion-crows-rotschreck?start=0#9050
It doesn't change other rulings about how to handle damage from Outside the Hourglass.

You mean you introducing a new case that is different from the norm somehow REDUCES complexity? It would be SIMPLER if the damage from ooth followed the same sequence of events as normal strikes! I dont agree with this at all!

Strikes are declared then resolved in another step. "Attempting" to deal damage is reserved for this case, and the usage of that verb will not be used in that case* without indicating "with a strike" from now on (I don't know yet if there are other cards involved).
("attempt to block" is a different case)
Other effects are declared and resolved at the same time.
It doesn't affect how damage are handled. Both damage from strikes and from OotH are handled following the same sequence once they are inflicted.

Yes, and it was also implying that it was made by a strike (which is not trivial at all). I made that part explicit by adding it to the cardtext.

Well, thanks for reconsidering. I was working on a large post about the "attempting to inflict" part of Rotschreck that OtH did not provide an opportunity for.
In doing so, I noted that the rulebook, never clearly specifies when damage is inflicted, only when it is successfully inflicted. There may be an opportunity to clean up some rulebook language here as well.
Dear all,
Sorry for being confused.
Is it OK to say that Rotschreck is only playable after a strike that would make a minion inflicts aggravated damage on the opposing minion is announced?
If not, I'll have a new read on all this conversation.

Remi it is correctly understood...Rötschreck can only be played on a vampire when an opposing minion attempts to inflict aggravated damage on him or her. The "attempts" part has been ruled to tie it to the strike, meaning it can only be used during the announcements of strikes (where a damage inflicting strike is announced) but before the resolution of them.

As far as I understand, if you play rötschreck yourself: you choose your strike and then immediately play rötschreck because thats how playing cards works in VTES. You play the cards you intend to play together. Then the other player gets opportunity to play their cards and effects, etc.
Sure, you cant play rötschreck as an active player unless you're playing on someone elses turn, (OOT master) but there exists a scenario where this might save the opponent a strike card (enkil cog rush, perhaps).
I am not entirely sure how the sequencing works in a case where a third player is playing rötschreck. Is it played roughly similarly as DI or do the acting and defending player choose their strikes first?

The latter, both players have to choose thier strikes first as sequence goes from acting to blocking to rest of the players clockwise (similar to how Eagle’s Sight is played).
