Hello, Oi, Hola: I can help translating new rules/cards into Spanish and Portuguese. Or I could assemble a team and supervise their translations as well. I do this for a living, so it is only fair to offer this for my undead friends. Let me know if that helps in anyway. Maybe people could have the option when ordering cards through DriveThruCards to have them printed in a language of their choice. Best, atenciosamente, un saludo, Felipe

My point actually is: since VTES is being printed on demand, if I translate everything, would it be possible to choose the language that you want it printed when submitting an order?

We (BCP and DriveThru) would also need to get things set up for it. All very possible down the road. A few things to consider: - We're overhauling the rulebook and card text templating. If you translate cards right now, you'll have to do a lot of that work again several months from now. - I'm very curious how translations will turn out with respect to card text length, especially for the cards that currently have very long text. - Vincent is already very busy with getting the card texts ready for the HttB bundles and with his work on the rulebook. He will also be very busy with projects for other products we have in development (more reprint bundles, a V5 tie-in set, etc.). Translation projects will require Vincent's assistance (and possibly mine) and his time is limited.

I understand this would be an ongoing project, with all the rephrasing going on, and I don't mind updating translations as needed. Again, I am a professional translator, so I will keep in mind things like text length and so. This is my institution website. Take a look. www.etsu.edu/lcrc I think it makes sense to only translate whatever becomes available through DriveThruCards. So, nothing from older sets. The only thing I need will be a DOCX. file with all the texts. I'll translate everything and I can send it to Ginés, Tiago, and Márcio, so they can share the translations with the Spanish, Portuguese, and Brazilian communities, respectively (I don't know players or organizers from other Hispanic countries, but I will be happy to share it with them as well). As changes become necessary, you guys can email me a request to update. Lists would be better, but I can do individual cards too.

With the PoD I started jokingly toying with the idea of, say, Finnish translation... Också översättning till Östra-Svenska skulle vara rolig... Finnish Politics!

Please contact the proper volunteers. My 2 Euro cents - use one version for Portuguese, if you must. Don't build two portuguese versions.

I would so love to propose cards in french for some new players who aren't fluent in english ! But that might pose a problem during tournaments, especially continental ones in Europe. What is that card ? Lemme see... Oh, that's finnish, I'm screwed ! But then an app with quick scanning and translation would be just great, and better IMO than cards printed in other languages.

Having cards in different languages is not a problem for MtG players so why should they be for us? MtG even features languages that use different writing systems (chinese, japanese, korean, russian) and apparently sometimes people organize events with such cards no participant can actually read. No need to leave the card names untranslated (would be a BIG drawback methinks); people will recognize them especially from these nifty things called pictures... I mean if we now have the means to do translations especially with PoD, by all means let's go overboard! I would assume that doing this shouldn't cost anything extra with PoD... Finnish Politics!

Thinking of Latin America as a whole, where is less common to see people talking in languages other than Portuguese or Spanish, I am 100% sure that having the cards translated will have a positive impact in the number of players. The example about having people not being able to understand what a card does is part of the reality of that playgroup. Specially for new players. Most new players spent years playing the same deck, because they have to memorize what every single card does. In recent years a card company called Copag created a horrible CCG called Battle Scenes. We lost many VTES players to that game for the simple reason that it is written entirely in Portuguese. And yes, I will use Brazilian Portuguese.

Can card titles always use English? Perhaps with a translated subtitle (or vice versa). That would mean that the everyone from any language could know what card is being played.

That is a good idea. Specially because there are people who have prejudice against their own language. Thus, for some people, for reasons that I prefer not to discuss here, playing "Conditioning" is cooler than playing "Condicionamento."

The Design Team has even deliberately made cards with non-English titles and non-English-standard letters: www.secretlibrary.info/index.php?lib=2189 I prefer to simply use the same card title for a card, untranslated, across all languages. That way everyone knows which card you're talking about and it's easier to look up a card in the various database tools. Tangent: "Blood Turnip" doesn't even make sense in English. It'd be funny to see the looks on Brazilian players when they see "Nabo Sanguíneo".

If translated to brazilian portuguese (slang), the correct would be "Naba Sangrenta". Would not have the same meaning as the english, but most brazilian will evade a "Naba Sangrenta" at any cost. Yeah, we get that "English sounds cooler" thing in Finland too. Which is totally silly! Finnish Politics!

The golden idea in this thread is an app, which can translate cards. We are toying with a Russian localisation and there is can of worms opening by it. It all may be solved, but it surely will take some time. On the other hand an easy app or web service, where you can enter the name (or even better - scan) and see most recent text in native language, will solve most of the problems fast and cheaply. They will likely show it to you on their smartphone. I mean, there are full-art textless versions of cards also.. If you don't know half the cards, yes, it can be troublesome, I'm sure. But it is within your rights. > Lönkka wrote: > Yeah, we get that "English sounds cooler" thing in Finland too. > > Which is totally silly! > I am guilty of that.. I just think that anything in Finnish is mundane and boring and reminds me of real life. But there is no problem as long as english cards are available. Funny thing: Tero Aalto from our Helsinki group is an accredited translator, and has made it a principle of not having a single card with english text in his magic commander decks. Another fun thing he has joked about: "Accredited translator" can be read "accredited bleed bouncer" in Finnish. A title he definitely lives up to, btw. BUT Finnish actually has plethora of beautiful and evocative words and sayings and a good translation is a work very enjoyable. THEN AGAIN This game has so many arcane terms which are very hard to translate and if you leave bunch of stuff, such as disciplines etc, untranslated the end result is most likely just a horrible mishmash. Luckily though vast majority of local players are very fluent in english so playing the game as is poses no problem. The idea for translation was just a curiosity. Especially as it might be extremely easily produceable. Finnish Politics!

I think this game has already the poorest and ugliest try to "sound italian" (Palla Grande, Luccia Pacciola, Guisseppe the gravedigger just to mention some). other terms of the rpg, translated in italian will sound ugly or very funny (just think about the plural blood bond, "vincula". in italian sounds like something related to sodomy. I don't think that the cards need to be translated. of course all lore, fluff and rulebook should be Lurking in the underground of Bologna, Italy

The Brazilian community, before the s#|¥ blow up, rejoiced with the idea. Since there were players actually already translating it, I am working with them now. We will keep original card titles as suggested. Once I am done, I'll start working on the Spanish version. Carpe noctem, (I miss Jeff aka The Lasombra) Felipe
