Having read the bulk of the deck before seeing crimson sentinel, i assumed it was in there for funsies.

Yes it is what Ankha said i.e. original design degenerated into this. crimson sentinel was for fun and also a kind of old wishful thinking revived hy a discussion with Johannes during EC. i equipped twice but never used it.
