Before wrong ruling spread over the internet (and the weak mind of ancillae), I want to correct what is said in: extrala.blogspot.fr/2012/05/did-you-know-that-part-91.html I'll quote myself: > > Ankha wrote: > You cannot play Disarm in that case if you've maneuvered to long range. Check your link: > > "What if the opposing minion B is not sent to torpor and someone sets > the round to long afterward? > Can A play Pulled Fangs since A dealt more damage at close range > (before range was determined)? > Or are the damage from Outside the Hourglass considered to be dealt at > long range?" > > LSJ's answer: > > > Or are the damage from Outside the Hourglass considered to be dealt at > > long range? > Sure. > > The reason is that the range is by default close, but is set ("really known") during the set range step. So damage dealt before range is set is considered to be dealt at the "real" range once the range is set. In that case, since range has been resolved as "long", the damage of OtHG are considered to have been dealt at long range. > Prince of Paris, France Ratings Coordinator, Rules Director

Seems like Outside the Hourglass situation is super complicated. Could somebody answer to these to make it clear: When I can play Disarm/Pulled Fangs? There are minion A and B. All discplines uses superior version. Outside the Hourglass (A) + Majesty (A) close range? Outside the Hourglass (A) + Majesty (A) long range? Outside the Hourglass (A) + Selective Silence long (B) + Majesty (A) long range? Selective Silence long (B) + Outside the Hourglass (A) + Majesty (A) long range? Outside the Hourglass (A) + Thrown Gate (B) long range? Outside the Hourglass (A) + Aid from Bats (B) long range?

For some reason, I was looking at this post when writing my post: vekn.net/index.php/forum/6-rules-questions/15687-old-ruling-on-outside-the-hourglass-range#15698 What I hadn't notice is that Pascal didn't respond to the statements of IslandOfYiaros, and I didn't read LSJs post Ankha refers to closely enough. But the question still stands (although I think Ankha is right here), can Disarm be played after Outside the Hourglass have been played and range has been determined to be set to long?

Boris The Blade

With LSJ's answer, it is rather easy > > Surreal wrote: > Outside the Hourglass (A) + Majesty (A) close range? > Range is close -> yes. > Range is long -> no. It does not matter how or when the range was set. Selective Silence could allow you to go to long range to avoid being disarmed after a Alpha Glint, though. Yeah 4 discipline + older condition combo

Surreal

Ok, one more Outside the Hourglass (A) + Selective Silence long (B) + Alpha Glint (A)

I'll skip pithy comments and jump straight to this. LSJ reversed course from the excerpt being used as the basis for this argument. Please see below. > > > What if the opposing minion B is not sent to torpor and someone sets > > > the round to long afterward? > > > Can A play Pulled Fangs since A dealt more damage at close range > > > (before range was determined)? > > No. > > > Or are the damage from Outside the Hourglass considered to be dealt at > > > long range? > > Sure. > > If minion B would've had an Improvised Flamethrower equipped, would xe > take 2 aggravated damage as soon as the range was set to long in the > above case? > No. (Making the "sure" above an "I guess not -- but the point is that the range is long") "I guess not" sure seems to imply that the OtH damage is accumulated from the range at which it was played (close, unless a set range card determined range before the OtH was played). I'll skip all the cases in which it might follow (or not follow) that OtH and Disarm might (might not) work. I will point out, however, that Disarm does NOT include the text "only playable at close range" - it only checks for damage totals accumulated at close. This likely leads to a thematic/intent conflict with our typical "card text" rules definitions. D.

A vampire can have only one Disarm. > [POT] As above, but the vampire with this card has -2 strength. > LSJ's statement "Making the "sure" above an "I guess not -- but the point is that the range is long" is confusing, but it states clearly before and after that statement that Pulled Fangs (or Disarm which has the same wording) doesn't work when range is determined to be long. Boris The Blade

Because the range is close when OtH deals damage, and when the range is set to long it is too late to trigger the Improvised flamethrower? There is a timing difference: you play Disarm at the end of a round and look back on what happened in that round. Improvised Flamethrower resolves as soon as the damage is inflicted. However it sounds so cheesy that it would probably be easier to just consider OtH deals damage at the current range when it is played (generally close, unless someone played a set rage to long before).

There is no LIFO queue. A card is played. It resolves. Play the next card, or pass the impulse. Rinse, repeat. In the order described, OtH first, the damage is done at default range (close). Then Silence sets the range to long, Alpha Glint ends combat...all in that order. The 2 damage event happened at close range. Reverse the SS and OtH and you get ranged damage. Likewise, if you do that at a minion with an Imp Flamethrower, you get the ImpFT explosion effect, cause the range was at long range. If you OtH and then maneuver in the "Set Range Step", OtH damage has ALREADY happened, at predefined conditions (close). The only question that really exist is if Disarm and Pulled Fangs, which lack "Only playable at close range" are indeed really playable at long, if you managed to pull of prerange damage at close. For that, we need Pascal.

Prince of Paris, France Ratings Coordinator, Rules Director

Nope, the text is not so clear regarding the rules of this game. the "inflict 2 damage" part had to be interpreted as "this vampire inflicts". Many people thought it was environmental damage at first glance. Don't forget that this card had to be clarified the first week it went on the market... Cards can break the rules, no problem with that, but it should be easy to understand its interactions with other cards -go ahead and tell me disarm is not a common occurence in combat... The very creation of a step where "range is not yet known but ..." is the perfect example of the failure of wording this card properly. Surreal

There hasn't be any hard questions about Disarm before Outside the Hourglass. Problem is the rules. Adding this to rules would do a lot: Combat doesn't have a range until Determine Range part is over (or skipped). Any damage done before this is considered to done without range. Or you could change Disarm and Pulled Fangs to work only close range.

Ankha

> Reyda wrote: > The very creation of a step where "range is not yet known but ..." is the perfect example of the failure of wording this card properly. > We don't have the same definition of wording, it seems. Wording is the way things are expressed through the choice and order of words. I can't see how "before range is determined" is badly worded. Outside the Hourglass only highlights a foggy part in the rules concerning the range of a round before range is determined. Prince of Paris, France Ratings Coordinator, Rules Director

One case remains obscure - Fear of the void below + Outside the hourglass + Maneuver to close range + Majesty + Disarm. I'll issue a ruling by the end of the week - LSJ's rulings seem to indicate Disarm is only usable at close range, and that's where I think the cheapest / best fix would be

This is probably wrong but it seems to make the most sense without errata.

Here's a quick list of the rulings: OtH stands for Outside the Hourglass Unless written, no other cards are played. Cards are played in the order they are written (from left to right) - OtH + Majesty + Disarm => Valid. - OtH + Maneuver to long + Majesty Disarm => Not valid. - OtH + Alpha Glint + Disram => Valid. - OtH + Selective Silence + Disarm => Not valid. - Selective Silence + OtH + Disarm => Not valid. - OtH + Fear of the Void Below + Majesty + Disarm => Valid. - Fear of the Void Below + OtH + Majesty + Disarm => Not valid - OtH when opposing has a Improvised Flamethrower + Maneveur/set range to long => Improvised Flamethrower does not explode. Basically, Disarm isn't playable at long range (all the Disarm points), and damage is resolved when it is inflicted - we don't retro-check it (last point). I'm under the impression that slightly changing Disarm from this: > > Only usable at the end of a round of combat in which this vampire successfully inflicted more damage at close range than the opposing vampire. > to this: > > Only usable at close range at the end of a round of combat in which this vampire successfully inflicted more damage than the opposing vampire. > would be enough. Pulled Fangs would follow the same pattern.

I haven't seen this ruling before. In fact, I read the opposite from LSJ : > > If Fear of the Void Below (dai/DAI) would've been played earlier, > > would Outside the Hourglass then trigger the Improvised Flamethrower? > Yes. (And Disarm would not be playable, since the range is long) > Order here as no impact (just as setting the range before or after through Selective Silence has no impact). The general ruling stated by LSJ is that if the range is long in the end, then damage from OtH has been dealt at long (even if dealt before any range setting effect). Just a question : Would it not be easier, for simplicity sake, to just say that damage from OtH is environmental damage (like carrion crows), and be done with the whole complications?

When a card summons a lot of questions from players everywhere, it's either badly worded or badly designed, or both. That's a basic principle of game design. Sorry if you don't understand the "range is not yet known but..." It has nothing to do with "before range step", but has something to do with the timing where the damage is dealt. Weather control does not need to know about range. It does not "combo" with long/short range cards. OtH has to know because it has been decided (ruled ?) that the vampire inflicts the damage. Thus it has a possible combo with disarm/pulled fangs... It's not a strike. It's not evironmental either. It's not related to strength... The proposed solution (making it environmental à la Weather control) certainly avoids most of those problems... Imagination is our only weapon in the war against reality -Jules de Gaultier

For the rest of your post, it boil down to "I would not have ruled this this way, so the ruling is stupid". Fine, I get it, you disagree with current ruling. And by the way the card change to disarm-like card proposed by Pascal Bertrand also avoid most of thoses problem, without removing the "damage done by the vampire" part.

A possible clarification in the rules would be: > 6.4.2. Determine Range > > Each round of combat is fought at either close range or long range. Close range is the default for each round. The range determines which strikes and other strike-resolution-phase effects can be used. Some effects can only be used at close range, some only at long range, and some at either close or long range (see below). Once the range has been determined, it applies to the whole round (including effects that have happened before range has been determined, such as damage that would have been dealt during the round before the Determine Range step). > Though not necessary, this wouldn't prevent Disarm and Pulled Fangs from being reworded for clarity. I would not go that far to call a card badly designed, but I must say that it affects the game play very much, and that some rulings that resulted from usage of this card are illogical ( like, you determine range of the damage dealing effect after you dealt it, or you can play cards in that "before range" step before you prevent the damage from OtH or WC - while this game does not have "stack" ) Ignorance is bliss.
