Hi there, In our players group we now have a discussion whether Shattering Blow can be played at long range or only at close range. One of our players has a deck with the Muddled Vampire Hunter whom he equips with a Flame Thrower. The Muddled Vampire Hunter attacks Jin Wei, one of his own minions upon which he has placed the Fame card. If Jin Wei goes to torpor I will lose three pool, so I intercept with one of my Brujah, equipped with IR Goggles. In combat I first go to long range and then I want to play the Shattering Blow to cancel the effect of the Flame Thrower. At this point discussion starts whether the Shattering Blow can be used at long range. I send this question in a shorter version to WOTC and their answer was that the Shattering Blow can be used at long range. Still Mike, one of my friends, claims that the SB can only be used at close range, in comparison to Canine Horde, where the long range is mentioned specifically. If anyone has any good answers or arguments, please help. Thanks in advance, Victor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Victor Poederbach - Zwanenburg, The Netherlands ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In short, it can only be played at close. Strikes that specifically mention that they can be played at long range are effective at long. > One of our players has a deck with the Muddled Vampire Hunter whom he > equips with a Flame Thrower. Officially, one cannot use a (D)-action at oneself. Even under most house rules, where (D)-actions are defined by who you are acting upon, most house rules disallow attacks on your own minions and self-bleeding because of the possibility of imbalance. Strikes can only be used at range if they say they can be. Shattering Blow doesn't say anything about long range, so can only be used at short range. Tom Wylie rec.games.trading-cards.* Network Representative for aa...@cats.ucsc.edu Wizards of the Coast, Inc.

In combat I first go to I think I made a mistake here. If I follow the Complete Rules version 2.3, then I cannot intercept the Muddled Vampire Hunter since the Methuselah directs this action against one of his own minions. This is correct in that you cannot block (D) actions which are not directed at you. The set-up is invalid, however, since you cannot direct any (D) actions to yourself (with the exception of Rampage, by virtue of card text, and of all (D)-action-to-burn cards that do not restrict who may take the to-burn action). No combination of cards and/or effects available in the current cardset (Jyhad/VtES/DS) will allow two minions with the smae controller to enter combat with one another. This should be a rule (like not being able to bleed oneself), but has been ruled to simply not be instantiated (yet). -- L. >I send this question in a shorter version to WOTC and their answer was >that the Shattering Blow can be used at long range. ???? Since when has WotCoast got an answer correct? It cannot be used at long range, as, unless specified otherwise, everything is done at close. Peter "I'll just say my secret magic word..."
