Can you steal what no one owns?

An interesting question came up last night while my buddies and I were playing... One guy already had the Rack in play and another fellow was considering putting out his and contesting it. But first he wondered, can he attempt to steal the other guy's Rack, as per the card, while they were both contested? This way he would just be contesting the Rack with himself, could concede one of them and have it all to his lonesome. Well, we scratched our heads about this one a while, and argued a bit, even drawing in the wording of other cards, before concluding that we couldn't really come to a conclusion (we were grudgingly willing to let him do it, be he declined). Does anyone have any insights into this question? Dazed and confused, James M. Leithead

[ quoted text not captured ] I don't see hos the subject line fits the discussion, but... If you successfully steal the Rack, then you control it. If you subsequently bring another copy of the Rack into play, then you are contesting it with yourself. On your next untap, you must pay one for the Rack you wish to keep (assuming you stop contesting the other one, of course). Same thing applies to contesting any location (or any other card) that you already control.

The "But first (before contesting), he wondered if he could steal.." You cannot affect a contested card in any way. The card is basically out of play. (Unless card text explicitly says otherwise, of course). But, the Location won't be contested until you play the second copy, of course. Sorry for the dual posts.

If burnt, all the cards go. I would say by analogy that you can steal it, and if so, you get the location without any contest. Remember there' only one rack - the Methuseleh are fighting for it. It's certainly a classic plot device for something being fought over to be snitched from under the fighter's noses. Curt Adams (curt...@aol.com)

[ quoted text not captured ] No, he cannot steal it while it is contested. Contested cards are completely blocked from influence of any sort, except if specifically stated on a card. papillo the vincible

In article <3jiblu$4...@newsbf02.news.aol.com>, [ quoted text not captured ] No, contested cards are out of the game and not able to be affected by anything except a card that specifically mentions contested cards (such as Praxis: Solomon). The entry in the original FAQ about burning a contested location was incorrect, and both Tom and the DTR mention this (I think it's DTR 9/26/94). I think the FAQ currently on tower.itis.com mentions it, too. So the correct answer to the original question is No, you cannot steal the Rack while it's contested. | If you've got a hot lead on a new | *--Joe--* | PC game, call the announce line at | js...@vt.edu | ** csi...@discus.ise.vt.edu ** | +-------------------------------------+---------------------------------- "Carnivores, oy!" -- Timon, TLK
