Ernest Gary Gygax ( July 27, 1938 - March 4, 2008) is best known as the author of the well known fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), co-created with Dave Arneson and co- published with Don Kaye in 1974 under the company Tactical Studies Rules. Gygax is generally acknowledged as the father of the role- playing game He was diagnosed with an inoperable abdominal aortic aneurysm. Gygax died on March 4th, 2008. He passed away at 1am in his bed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Gygax While not technically about V:TES, the world of gaming and game conventions owe a tremendous amount to him. I've had a ton of fun and made a lot of friends playing D&D, and by extension all of the other games I've played and the other people I've met as a result. Many, many thanks, Mr. Gygax. - Ben Peal

Without Dungeons & Dragons, no Vampire: the Masquerade. Without Vampire: the Masquerade, no Vampire: the Eternal Struggle. > Many, many thanks, Mr. Gygax. Amen to that. HG

Seconded. 80 years old isn't bad, this guy sure had a heck of a life ! And now that he'll finally meet the pantheons of the gods, maybe he'll have to hear complaints about the caracs... ;-) R.I.P. Gary, you've earned it. -- Orpheus, unofficial Shemti model.

[ quoted text not captured ] He would have celebrated his 70th birthday on July 27 of this year. He was 69.

[ quoted text not captured ] Wow, I should really either sleep or learn my math (ok, I'm a poker dealer so I guess I must sleep) ! And 69 is not old. But the candle burned bright... [ quoted text not captured ]

While I in no way with to derail the waxing poetic about Mr. Gygax, who was a clever guy who helped invent a great deal of entertainment for all of us, do y'all remember how totally, um, bat-shit crazy the guy was? I mean, in a lovable way and all, but really. Go and reread the intro to the 1st Ed DM Guide. That is some crazy stuff right there. And remember the Etherial Mummies suggested to control your players? He certainly had some kind of vision... -Peter

Your comment reminded me of an old Usenet discussion about another colorful character, Aleister Crowley. I saved this quote, because it impressed me: "What I feel about the man personally, not sure that it matters. As I say, he was a man and most humans won't bear close scrutiny - especially those of any real talent." HG

I read the intro and foreword (or was it preface) last night and didn't really see what you were talking about. Neil

Not trying to bitch here, but.. We're all saying "thanks" now, but have any of us ever thanked mr Gygax (or at least tried to), while he was still alive? I mean, so he would've actually known how we appreciated his work? Same goes for all those other people who have enriched our lives. Just something to think about, y'know.

The whole DMG (the one written in, like, 1978 or whatever, almost completely by Gygax. The original version had the cool big read efritti or whatever on the cover) is total frothing madness. I mean, it is that special kind of madness that might not seem so mad if you are *really* into role-playing. But it is total insanity. I gotta go dig up my copy and find some quotes... -Peter
