I was wondering; does cardtext from Carlton prohibit him from playing the "dodge" card in second round of combat, if he used his inbuilt strike doedge in the first round? relevant cardtext: "Carlton can strike for 1R damage, and he may dodge as a strike once each combat." W

Blooded Sand

[ quoted text not captured ] yup. he can only dodge ONCE per combat. So his second strike in a single combat (press/TTracking) will be for 1r.

Blooded Sand

[ quoted text not captured ] Sorry, misread question. His innate card text allows him a dodge once per combat. He is free to use and then another source of dodge, or use another source of dodge instead of his innate dodge. The card text is not a limiter, but an enabler

LSJ

[ quoted text not captured ] Correct. And a vampire with Rutor's Hand can also play Freak Drive. And Fatima may play Disguised Weapon after using her innate ability. And Nakhthorheb may play Majesty to untap. And so on.

[ quoted text not captured ] Thx. I couldnt imagine it was indeed so. But how do i see that in the text? Probably my English isnt good enough for understanding the use of "may"? Or is there something else i am missing? W

LSJ

[ quoted text not captured ] That depends. Do you have the same question with Rutor's, Fatima, and Nakhthorheb? If no: then it's just a matter of having looked at Carlton's text too long and having your mind play word tricks on you. If yes: then it's a matter of the ambiguity of the English, which in this case is solved by context. For this game, a restriction would have to be worded more explicitly: "Carlton may not dodge more than once each combat" or somesuch (Web of Knives, Inverary, Dive into Madness, e.g.).

[ quoted text not captured ] Had i thought about Rutors, Fatima and Nakthor, i would probably have had the same problems :-) Thx for your replies, W

[ quoted text not captured ] No - it enables him to dodge as a strike based on his own card text once per combat. He is free to tap any other means of dodging and generate other "Strike: Dodge" effects (e.g. by using the card "Dodge") as are other minions without an inherent Dodge ability. -- Regards, Daneel

[ quoted text not captured ] "Once per X" is different to "Only once per X" in VTES, but the difference is not great in general English. Only Once per X limits it to only once, never again from whatever source. Once per X is to limit a special ability of a minion or card. e.g. Eze the Demon Prince, Nakhtoreb, Rutor's Hand, Forced March @[CEL] [FOR] Hopefully that helps make sense of things for you.

LSJ

[ quoted text not captured ] Not by much. They seem have the same meaning in VTES. >but the > difference is not great in general English. > > Only Once per X limits it to only once, never again from whatever > source. Not quite. It would depend on the context. See Black Gloves (doesn't provide blanket damage protection when the bearer is striking with them -- it only means that Black Gloves won't damage their bearer more than once each combat.
