Can we do something about all this ANNOYINGLIY increasing amount of ANNOYING ADS? Like, enable all posting REAL users as mods, and only allow mods to post, and allow mods to make other users mods, Or: make me admin so I can delete all the spam or something Or: need members to be accepted by admin, and make many members admin so that there will always be someone there to accept them.. Because it's so bad.

[ quoted text not captured ] That would be an awesome idea if this was a user forum. However it is a USENET group, thus unmoderated. thepathofblood.com, however, is moderated. Come join us, the water is lovely, and there are no spambots

I think this group runs off of an IBM supercomputer terminal from 1970 somewhere in the mountains of Turkmenistan. In order to service the page, expert sherpas have to scale the mountains using only a tattered leather map and a divining rod for direction. Once they reach the entrance to the cave, the sherpas refuse to go in; on the the Chosen One is allowed inside. When, or if, the Chosen One enters the cave, he will be tested before gaining access to the server. The first test includes reciting card text, verbatim, for all 326 Jyhad cards *as they were originally printed.* The second test requires the Chosen One to complete a JOL game played on their cell phone using only a stationary bicycle for power and bread and water for sustenance. The final test that the Chosen One must endure in the cave is to answer the Riddle Phantastique under the 1994 Madness of the Bard rules, no do-overs. The text of the riddle is, of course, forbidden to infidels. Upon completion of these three tests, the Chosen One gains access to the server room. What dangers lay in wait in the server room are unknown; only the Chosen One may enter. It is believed that unwanted server messages may be removed by carefully scratching the magnetic strip on the hard drive device. Failure on any part of these tests is certain death for the Chosen One, and, in all likelihood, the end of the world(server) as we know it. The challenge is almost insurmountable, but the reward is for the benefit of all. Will the Chosen One take up the quest? Only time will tell. Until then, we wait. Brandon

[ quoted text not captured ] The problem with moving to a moderated group, given the historical nature of communal groups like this one, is that everyone being used to their absolute freedom are unwilling to trust any person or persons in even the most minor of regulation of that freedom. So, not a chance in hell. > Because it's so bad. There is absolutely NOTHING that you can do about the spam, which would be a good use of your time. Sorry about that. Congratulations. You are witnessing the end of USENET. It's been years in the making. I'm suprised it hasn't happened earlier. [ quoted text not captured ] What you are saying sounds over the top in either a sarcastic or entirely fed-up way, I can't tell. What would you say about moving over to the WW forum? It is already moderated (I believe). Brandon

Would be good IMHO for newbies so they can more easily find the most active discussions/players as well. If/when we do, maybe WW could make some archive of all the LSJ ruling threads as well for easy reference, or else we can't say "jeez, just search 'LSJ <card a> <card b>, and there's your answer!" anymore. :-)))

Actually, I believe the "ANNOYING ADS" have been around since always, for always... Well, not really, but the Use-Usenet-For-Commercial- Purposes tension has been around since the 80s at least - which was before I started reading it so maybe it goes back longer than that. I have noticed quite a few ads on the newsgroup today, which is very unusual. What has been happening for at least the last 15 years or so is that certain organizations have been active in "spam canceling", my term for it. That is, when they see a blatantly spammed ad, they send out a cancel message which takes it off any newsgroup server that subscribes to that particular organization's cancel messages. Subscription is always voluntary. No newsgroup server has to pay attention to any cancel message, not even one that comes from the original poster. But by subscribing to the cancel messages of more or less trusted spam-cancellers, newsgroup servers have tended to keep their newsgroups pretty clean of the stuff. You might see one or two from time to time - but then they disappear as the cancel message comes through. And normal users like you and I shouldn't really need to do anything about this kind of stuff, the real blatant off-topic advertisements. (Stuff that pops up in a single newsgroup only is a different story. Spam cancellers aren't gonna worry about that stuff normally.) For some reason, it doesn't seem to be working as well as normal this week on the server I subscribe to. I'm not sure why. Fred

The VTES specific White Wolf forum is (well, was--I haven't been over there much since they changed forums) fairly active and full of both older and new players (Coupe and LSJ are always there to answer questions; I was farily active before the reboot, as were Jeff and Eno and many other NG regulars). So I'm not quite sure what it would mean to "move over" to the WW forum. In terms of abandoning the NG, I can't see any advantage to that. People already post in multiple forums and groups. Personally, I find web based discussion forums infinitely less attractive than usenet, but that is me. I don't like the non threaded aspect of forum discussions (i.e. the "I want to respond to the first post in the thread, but I end up on page 6..."), I don't like all the dumb bells and whistles (i.e. little animated avatars and screen names and little awards that build up in your profile and the pretty frames and banner adds and whatever. But then I'm old and miss Mattlock...). Good newsreaders are reasonable diligent about filtering out spam, and yahoogroups at least gives you the minor satisfaction be being able to report spammers. [ quoted text not captured ] I thought we just got 4 alcoholic frat-boys, put them into the Toy Chest Test and tossed the chest off Puget Sounds... if you can make it to the server alive, we let you have the password... or is that access to the Sabbat server (ponders)...
