Thanks to everyone who came up to TempleCon this year; it was an overall success and we look forward to hosting the NERQ there again next year! Congratulations to Jonathan Scherer for winning the NERQ, and to all of our Qualifiers. Congratulations to Oscar Garza for winning our Friday 2-round tournament. Congratulations to Ben Swainbank for winning Sunday's draft. A more detailed report of these events will come soon. Some announcements: A 10th-anniversary tin full of counters was found. Also, 7 silver-sleeved cards were found. If you lost them, please contact me (jod...@yahoo.com) and I'll get them to you. Now, here's a list of the more questionable rules questions that were posed to me over the weekend, and the answers I gave. I am hoping I was at least mostly correct: * Sebastian Goulet (basic) is in play. His controller plays Feral Spirit on him. Then Sebastian is merged. Is Sebastian still an Ahrimanes? Or is he a Gangrel Antitribu? I ruled that he keeps the Feral Spirit card, but is now a !Gangrel again, as the Advanced version of a vampire makes an active clan-change (i.e. when you merge Valerius). * Ahrimanes Protectorate is in play. A second player wishes to play it, and it will contest. Does that minion have the opportunity to burn a blood to untap at the end of the action? I ruled 'no', as it is part of the card effect. Afterwards, I was pointed to a ruling on Khabar Glory, wherein the minion still untaps even if they are contesting the card, but I am still not sure about this case, since it gives an ability to actively do something later. * Vampire A has one blood. Vampire B is in torpor with two blood. Vampire A attempts to rescue Vampire B from torpor, declaring the cost to be one blood from A, and one from B. A minion attempts to block Vampire A, but Vampire A plays Call of the Hungry Dead at superior to continue the action, but burning a blood in the process. The action is obviously unsuccessful, but does Vampire B still need to burn a blood? I ruled "yes", because even if an action fizzles due to the inability to pay the cost, you must pay as much of the cost as you can. * Rise of the Nephtali is in play. The player who played it gains the Liaison title. A vampire of the same capacity attempts to take the title, and begins contesting it. The methuselah who originally played Rise, and who was still contesting the title, is ousted. During the untap phase of the other player, does her vampire gain the title? I said "yes", because Rise of the Nephtali sets up a lasting effect. So how did I do? Josh "Jozxyqk" Feuerstein Prince of Boston

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that the advanced version clan, sect, title, etc. override *only* the base version of same, and not any other changes that have been made through play. > * Ahrimanes Protectorate is in play. There's no reason a vampire should lose their title without gaining a new one (or some card text that strips them of it). I think you're right. > So how did I do? > Not bad. Well, it doesn't override any card-in-play effects. http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/msg/4c506c8b953a0208 > > * Ahrimanes Protectorate is in play. Don't know, though. Correct. It is not played on the acting vampire, so "this Ahrimane" must mean the acting one and be part of the successful action, not an effect that the card in play has on the the ahrimane it is on. > > * Vampire A has one blood. Well, he did try to banish my vampires a couple too many times, using up some of my Telepathic Misdirections to block it that would have saved me had I used to to bounce a Stanislaved bleed for 6 instead (Duffin!!!!!!!), but between Watkins cross table rescuing said Stanislava from torpor after I finally got her there while I was at 4 pool, Lance not attacking his prey's zero blood, Haven Uncovered Stanislava when she clearly had no combat defense when he had the chance, and me forgetting to prayer play the last Forced in my hand after failing to block Stanislava's killing 3 stealth bleed of 4 in an attempt to top deck a bounce card (which turned out to be the next card...), Josh's hand in my demise seems pretty minimal :-) -Peter

Fantastic time, good games and fun weekend mixer! as for this "particular" game of question-for the record-round2 qualifier- please let the readers know: i think you are leaving out the part in all of this report-that included NOT only did i rescue stanislava -but YOU too on the same turn :) keeping table parity and hopefully earning me favor with BOTH my cross table allies AND i might add-i even helped lance doubly so ( who should have seen my overt generousity). lance-my prey-because stansislava had a havenuncoved on it- (next time i will have to paint a bigger sign lance) i wanted lance to at least take SOME actions because he was walling up each turn-starting to keep his vamps untapped passing turns etc-way too overly cautious- deflecting bleeds-he must have deflected 8-9 times and was using some new tech on a new vampire to pitch 2 cards each upkeep and of course cycling into deflections/misdirections- (all i remeber is that he had way more than 10 pool and i wasnt going to bleed for that much in one turn-UNLIKE - peteyO- who bleed me out in- i kid you not-the first 10 minutes into the round with lasambra UBER govern bleed- (where are those archons when you need them :) -granted PETEO made the finals with that -which might be the moral of the story) anyway... have to give lance some incentive to go forward-and i thought it all looked like a BIG RED SIGN that says-hit me stansislava- (cant get any bigger than that) so in reality -the only person i didnt help- was josh :) so-yeah i rescued you both-such a nice guy- right-and wasting two actions and EVEN blood off of my vampires(such a generous and a swell guy) the problem with this scenario -however-was what i thought were equal experienced (in terms of years playing vtes) players me, you, josh and lance -and like a chess game being played out 3 moves ahead-looked like to me -imho that things might get going if i put some incentive on the table (and certainly not to have you ousted! comeon-stanislava should ahve been back in torpor in no time and no one would ahve been hurt) what i -didnt- count on was lance-NOT attacking his prey (stanislava with NO blood on it!) come on-who doesnt do this? no matter how you look at it-that is the critical issue so-normally-you see-he would ahve killed stanislava-taken at least an action and i could have bleed him for 3-something i wasnt doing for a few turns up until that point- probaly putting him at 9-10 or so-you would be alive AND having rescued you-been able to recover ... to continue wittling down josh-so you could get YOUR own vp off of josh sorry it didnt work out that way-but i certainly-for the record-was supporting your effort and was cooperating to the fullest (my own downfall) [ quoted text not captured ]

Man. If only Liz Wescott saved me :-) > AND i might add-i even helped lance doubly so ( who should have seen my > overt generousity). Yeah, if Lance had taken advantage of the situation, I'm pretty certain he could have just ousted Greg, giving me another turn to solidify my position and/or possibly oust Josh (unlikely, to be sure). But instead, Lance did nothing. At all. Which was weird. So either Lance became momentarily confused (leading to my death) *or* cleverly played confused 'cause he was perfectly happy for Greg to oust me, maybe 'cause I was in a stronger position (other than, like, my 4 pool) than Greg--even ousting me, Greg got ousted by Lance in a turn or two, so maybe Lance was just making a super close to the chest power play by letting Greg live for that extra turn. > so-yeah i rescued you both-such a nice guy- right-and wasting two > actions and EVEN blood off of my vampires(such a generous and a swell > guy) That goes without saying :-) -Peter

imho you were the best chance to close down josh-having enough intercept to stop his votes and damaging crows/presses what was unclear over again this whole story-is how lance could think he could get anything past josh once you were gone? lance had no intercept except telepathics which alot were used up (maybe he runs 15?) in anycase-we know a vote deck-unchecked by intercept-trumps anything except rush and maybe a few imortal grapples to turn off majesty (especially with voter cap pool gain) lance wasnt going to be able to bleed him out faster than he could call a few krcs and gain the pool back by awe-oration-cap gain good going josh! believe me-i have learned that i couldnt win a bleed war vs vote deck i was there trying to do the same thing in the final day at gencon last year2005 when, in one of the rounds, i had as my prey, i ws trying to oust the guy with the justicar/ic votes who eventually won the event (or was in the finals at least dont quote me)-it ws the guy who played teh SAME high cap vote deck each year-2004 and last year) must be a great talker and negotiator1

I never played any games with Josh (ironically not even the Duffin drafts after the qualifier), but I'm sure he had something to do with my suboptimal performance.

Without the pre-final scores in front of me there's no way to be sure, but I like to imagine that without that mistake I could have been in the winning seat instead. To modify the old adage, always assume vapires with DOM can use it, even when they're down to their last 4 cards.

No Scott at DC in 05, and I qualified. The corollary is that my key to qualification is getting swept by Matt Morgan in R1.

Although, along that same vein, I'd like to thank you for seating me between the two players who gave me advice on how to play my deck that day in the first round. I just knew I was a goner when you got him laptopicated. The Eurayle/Iniko combo is way busted in draft! I wouldn't have survived if Kevin hadn't called all those Autarkis Persecutions... and Shane's Ancient Influence, too, I suppose. And Brothers Grimm. (Damn, that's a lot of bloat for draft! No wonder we timed out.) As for our Saturday draft, I don't have the Matt Morgan Memory (tm) when it comes to recalling particulars of games, but I seem to recall that I was top-decking some good stuff with Improvised Tactics. That card worked out well for me, it really helped the card flow with my aus guys, and kept them away from nasty combat at pro. Don't think I ever used it at pot, though. > Seconded! If I recall correctly, you had master hand-jam almost the entire game. Then you got two Shambling Hordes and they were both stolen by Jared. Then even after you got a Shambling Horde you finally were able to keep, you couldn't go backward with it for fear of it just getting smoked by Carrion Crows. Even so and despite Ben having to wall up or go backward the entire game, it took me an hour and forty-five minutes to oust you and you had Jared pretty low at one point. Not really too bad a performance in all. I think if you'd Famed Jared instead of Faming me, you actually might have had him, since I think Ben would've tried to back-oust Jared. Might've worked. Might not have. Anyway, if you'd had gotten Jared, I wouldn't have had two game wins and therefore wouldn't have wound up with second place overall, despite an absolutely wretched performance in the final, so I'm not complaining. Matt Morgan (qualified without bounce!)

I swear, you have to twist that guy's arm SO HARD to get him to sanction a draft. Wait. That doesn't sound like Oscar at all! :-) Bwa, Improvised Tactics tech?! I swear, that card is NOT GOOD, not even in draft. Imagine if you had not put the Improvised Tactics in your deck at all instead of playing it at Auspex. Imagine that the card underneath it had instead been *where the Improvised Tactics was*. (This argument null and void if you were playing a 40-card draft deck.) > Seconded! Well, we did both give you advice on how to play (and what cards to swap in and out of) your deck, but you weren't quite between us - Matt was your predator, but Jared was your prey. I was Jared's prey. Though not for long. Curse you, Jared Strait and Ben Swainbank! Once again you are the death of me! :-) > Had a great time! You set a high bar for the mid-atlantic qualifier. Ooooh. We're not about high bars in the mid-atlantic. We're about low bars. Or well-stocked bars. At least one of those. Josh a day late and a muddled vampire hunter short

I must not have mentioned that I was silently willing Nick to rescue both your predator's Stanislava and your Elizabeth Westcott. :-) I really did consider rescuing Stanis myself, but I sure wasn't going to rescue your Liz too, so I decided to instead just hope that Nick would do it to maintain the balance of power. But I didn't want to say it out loud, because I was hoping he'd tap out doing that stuff so I could finally have a chance to oust him. Plus, I wasn't expecting Craig (sp?) to go for the oust by Blood Dolling on and playing Bonding (surprise!), rather than burning the Haven and trying to live another turn. Sigh, sat between Nick's Carlton Van Wyk and Rachel Brandywine, and your "guys with Animalism and Auspex", with my poor harmless Fishtarri... there's almost nothing better than 0.5 VP. ;-) See, that was my secret plan in trying to Banish your Omaya - I can't even begin to tell you how bad I feel about not letting you bounce some stealthy bleeds of 6 to me. :-) Of course, I wouldn't have had to go for Banishing Omaya at all if you hadn't insisted on putting that Pulse on her... if you stuck to just surprise-Computer-Hacking me all day long, I probably would have tapped out more and stuck to getting blocked while calling votes that hurt my prey instead of getting blocked while calling votes that would hurt my predator. ;-) Josh thinks you've just earned a new epithet: peter "i got killed because i forgot to play my forced awakening" bakija

Hmm. It needs a new name to differentiate it from the original Bakija Gambit. Some day Peter's experiences will lead to an entire V:TES-themed version of Murphy's Law. -Robert

If you makes you feel any better, it wouldn't have helped. Out of my last three cards, two were Telepathic Misdirection, and you might have noticed that I left Kij untapped with one blood until I was ousted. You would've eaten Jon's bleed of 4 either way. You did have a decent shot at eventually bleeding off Jon's 1 remaining pool, and letting him have that oust would have guaranteed him ousting you soon afterwards, which is exactly what happened.

[ quoted text not captured ] Right. Well, at that point, my options would be: 1) Bounce bleed back to you, have you be ousted, probably get ousted soon thereafter. 2) Don't bounce bleed back to you, be ousted by bleed. You were hitting me pretty heavily at that point, and I didn't have the pool to be able to eat a bleed for four. John Eno

That's true, and you were probably a goner whether I was ousted or not. If the situation had come up, you would have been under no particular obligation to swing the game in my favor rather than Jon's. When it gets right down to it, I shouldn't have been leaning on you so heavily in that situation. As you pointed out at the time, it was a bad idea and ultimately lead to my own ousting. I should have spent a turn or two hunting, recouping pool, and pulling Zip out of torpor. One of the things that kept me from doing that was the time limit, since a timeout would have had more or less the same results as getting ousted.

Ah. I was assuming we were basing our theoretical discussion on what actually happened. As it was, I did try to block Jonathon's last bleed against me, and he snuck by me, so presumably he had the stealth when he bled you as well. It's all guesswork at this point, anyway. I was just trying to cheer you up a bit. > > You were hitting me pretty heavily at that point, and I didn't have the > > pool to be able to eat a bleed for four. > > That's true, and you were probably a goner whether I was ousted or not. > If the situation had come up, you would have been under no particular > obligation to swing the game in my favor rather than Jon's.
