I pose the question to all of you who have attended these in the past which
would be the better one to attend if a guy could only afford to go to one??
Not that they are not both great convention I am sure they are both good
but..............

Well, GenCon hosts the N. American championship tournament. But to play in
it you need to qualify. Last year there was a qualifier tournament at
GenCon the night before the championship. I haven't seen any official word
about a GenCon qualifier tournament for this year though. Origins will
feature as many as four sanctioned V:TES tournaments, including a qualifier.
It is usually difficult to find lodging in Milwaukee for GenCon. Now is
the time to make those reservations. I have no experience at trying to find
a hotel in Columbus for Origins, but I suspect that it is slightly less
difficult.
The qualifier at last year's Origins had 23 players. The qualifier at
GenCon 2001 had 72.
Both conventions attract skilled players from all over. The air
conditioning at Origins gets to be too cold, even for July. The noise level
at GenCon can be unbearable.
Columbus has the Midwestern non-accent. Milwaukee features some
unintelligible dialect of English.
The Prince of Columbus is hospitable, funny, tall, and a skilled player.
The Prince of Milwaukee is Gross.
Origins happens on July 4th weekend. It serves as a nice reminder that
the sun sets on the British empire at dusk. GenCon is in early August,
reminding us that it is August and we are in Milwaukee.
It's hard to say. In the end I think that you should go to GenCon and
become the continental champion for 2002.

Errol,
The obvious choice is that everyone should go to Origions. Since it happens
to also be my birthday, then everyone can shower me with presents and we
have a good reason to head to the bar and get filthy stinking drunk! ;)

It's on the VEKN calendar, although it hasn't been announced yet (waiting
for the full list of qualifiers).

To bolster what my esteemed collegue from Ohio has said...
My wife and I have been going to Origins every year for the past four
years. I've been to Gen Con twice. The reason Origins is an every year
event and Gen Con is only occassional is the class of attendee at
Origins I've found to be of much higher calibre Convention wide. Aside
from one self-indulgant a**hole last year, the Origins crowd in
general and the VTES crowd in specific were nice, funny, and level
headed.
The events are great at both events
I've found the smell at Gen Con to be far worse than Origins
There is a hotel attached to Origins that is not necessarily
reasonable but more reasonable than hotels close to the Milwaulkee
convention center.
Gen Con has that neato spy bar. Columbus has nothing like that.
There are lots of Buckeyes at Origins, but their dull stares and
earthy stench blends into the background after a while. (calm down
Buckeye fan.. just a joke)
The Prince of Columbus took an egg to the back to protect visiting
VTES players... I've never heard a story like that about any Wisconsin
prince.
In short, I think Origins is the ginchiest, and since my wife and I,
like you, can only afford one of the two cons to go to we go to
Origins every year.

I'd expect GenCon will probably have about the same number of
VTES tournaments - last year I remember at least three being
available (Thursday evening short tournament, Friday the
last-chance qualifier, Saturday the NA Championship and the
Shadow Twin "losers bracket" event) and there might have been
more that I forgot about.

Probably true, but probably not *much* easier. (I haven't
been to Origins the last couple years but I'm pretty sure
when I did go, our rooms were reserved pretty far in advance.)

The AC at Origins can be awfully cold too. Probably better
that than too warm, though.

I thought that was the same Midwestern non-accent, but what
do I know, I'm from Minnesota. :-)

Ed Gross, that is. Ha ha ha. :-)

The weather was actually really nice at GenCon last year,
most of the time. Not that it matters since you'll only
rarely see the world outside the convention center anyway.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, just because I do think GenCon
draws a lot more VTES players and therefore is (even) more
fun. Not that Origins isn't also great, cause it is. But
GenCon is bigger yet.

Don't forget Week of Nightmares at GenCon, hosted by the LA types.

Ahh, yes but we brew beer in this here city. Doesn't come out of the
bubblers though.

lol.

Technically that didn't happen until the 1940's with the return of
India to the Indians.

It's hot, but again there is beer. Oh, and the Safehouse.

I'll answer this...
We were walking back to Jay's car from the pizza place we ate at when some
idiot threw an egg from a passing vehicle. Jay reacted admirably, screaming
'Fuck Yoooooooooo!' almost as soon as he was hit. Judging by the angle the
egg was thrown, I can say with some gratitude that it would have hit me had
Jay not been standing in the way. For taking an egg for me, I owe Jay a
minor boon.
Cheers,
WES

This is the last year that Gencon is in Milwaukee. The venue is a
good one with lots of tradition now and this is bound to change when
the con goes to Indianapolis. So, it's your only chance to experience
the end of an era.
Andrew
gencon or origins, eh?
well..speaking as a resident of the *cough*fine*cough* city of
milwaukee i'd like to point out a few of the city's attractions (i'm
sure the attraction of gencon should be self-explanitory).
1) weather: There are 3types of gencon weather: Stiflingly humid,
with heat to cause spontaneous combustion. Torential downpours.
Absolutely, stunningly ,beautiful, light breeze kind of days. The
bonus of the frist two is, of course...you'll be inside anyways. The
perk of the last is seeing the horribly confused look on the native's
faces (nice weather...milwaukee...it must be end times!).
2) eats: don't be foolled by the 'con's monopoly on internal
eateries! Sure, you may be tempted to get that $12 dollar hotdog, but
wait! Only in Wisconsin will you find the joy that is...Webb's.
George Webb's is a super-cheap 24hour greasy spoon, with fine coffee,
fine burgers, and...umm...lots of local color. As if that wasn't
enough Milw. is also home to none other than REAL CHILI! Now this
place (also a local chain) is a /real/ greasy spoon, it serves chili
and nothing else, good chili no less. And a full meal will run about
$5.
3) freakshow: the Time's Cinema is home to the Friday night Freak
Show, pretty much a midnight showing of classic (and not so classic)
cult films. Last year during the 'con they were showing Highlander
(which is kinda a dud to me), but they also play stuff like Aliens,
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Army of Darkness...taste the big screen!
4) me: come on man, let's face it...what other reason could there be
to come to milwaukee than to see your own, humble, Waffle King.
yes...i hold this city in my buttery grip, i swollow fools into my
waffle-y yawp, i terrorize with my umm...*sigh* 120lb weakling's frame
*grin*. well...you could just see Heslin instead...he's /way/ cooler
(he misses out on the 'handles corpses for a living' style points, but
whallops me in most other categories of keen). i think i /may/ have
bigger boots, though.
so...ahh...there you have it...hrmm...Milwaukee! City of Industry!
City of Tomorrow! and anyways, if you come, you can play against the
fearsome Santa Reg deck, and that cannae be all bad.
chris, waffle king of milwaukee
---promises if you come he will not once say 'so...spent $4 on that
soda, eh? well...i'm just gonna walk home and have some real food,
later.'

Only went to Origins twice, once when it moved around the country. Been going
to Gen Con enough that I lost track of how many years it has been.
Anyway, last time I went to Origins, which was a few years back, I wasn't
thrilled. Given a choice, I'd rather check out DragonCon than go to another
Origins. Obviously, I rank GC higher.
I should mention, though, that I don't go to major cons to play V:TES (or any
other CCG).
Nevertheless, in general, more important stuff, thoughout gaming, happens at
GC.

And if any of you saw Futurama on Sunday... the City of Love. (Home
of the Beer Goggles). God that was funny. Fox seems to be taking a
real shine to Milwaukee of late (Springfield Americas fattest town,
etc.)
But thats enough OT,
Other Milwaukee attractions: our new art museum, its real purty.
As for the egg, no Wisconsin prince has done that, or similiar, but
then again in Wisconsin they haven't had to. Origins, home of the egg
hurlers?
