One more rules question from the weekend

I forgot about this one, regarding my very own deck (not in the NERQ, of course, where I wasn't allowed to play), which I should have asked before :) If Demdemeh turns his retainer into an ally, does that ally's life become a "starting life" attribute, for purposes of effects which need to know it (like Vagabond Mystic) ? I was playing it as if that were the case. Thanks.

Or even better, a second The Unmaskening, as you want one of those in play real bad anyway. -Peter
