This recently came up in a game and after a long argument we
worked out one type of ruling but I want to hear what the net has to say
about it. The first question is on first strike. The situation is like
this: Roxanne the malkavian has a flame-thrower and she attacked through
a direct action Ricki the gangrel. Now comes the controversy. Ricki
plays canine horde at superior which is supposed to destroy equipment at
range with first strike (another side question is, is first strike before
range is chosen?). Anyways, I want to play Read Intentions which gives
Roxanne a "Dodge". This is not strike:Dodge but just "Dodge". So can I
have Roxanne "Dodge" the canine horde or does the flame thrower go bye-bye?
The second question is related to the first and it is: Is Read
Intentions a Strike or just a "Dodge" but not a strike? So I would
appreciate some answers either through email or posting.
Thanx,
Todd

From the NetRep and Design Team RUllings 11/9/94:
All dodges are strikes, even if the card forgot to say so.
As Roxanne is the Acting Minion, her strike would be chosen first. Since
she chose to use the Flame thrower, she cannot change her mind and dodge
when Ricki announces Canine Horde as her strike.
If she had announced the strike:Dodge, the dodge "negates the effect of the
opponent's strike", as the rulebook says, so she would keep the flamethrower.

All dodges are strike: dodges. They just forgot to write it in. In
your example, Roxanne is the acting minion, so she would play strikes first.
She'll probably strike with the flame thrower, and then, when the canine
hordes come running, it's too let to go back and say "no, I want to dodge".
Combat goes like this:
1)acting vamp's before range stuff.
2)blocking vamp's before range stuff.
3)acting vamp's manuevers.
4)blocking vamp's manuevers.
5)acting vamp's strike declaration.
6)blocing vamp's stike declaration.
7)first strike resolution ( both vamps ).
8)normal strike resolution ( both vamps ).
9)acting vamp's presses.
10)blocing vamp's presses.
11)repeat untill fully blended.

You can dodge first strike attacks.

All dodges are strikes, sucks doesn't it, makes Crusher's pay 1 pool for a
dodge power go from good to nearly worthless.

Roxanne dodges. Someone else posted the effective order of strike
resolution; it was very clear and understandable, so I'll reproduce it:
- Combat Ends resolves first
- Dodge resolves next
- First Strike resolves next
- normal strikes resolve last
So Dodge resolves before the First Strike can have effect. (And no,
range is chosen before any strikes. However, strikes that offer
maneuvers can be played when choosing range, but the minion must then
use the named strike, just as if the minion used the maneuver from a
weapon.)

All Dodge cards are strikes.

Oh I don't know about that. Picture a battle in which Crusher
blocks someone who then procedes to announce some huge combination of
aggravated damage, expecting Crusher not only to go to torpor, but to
burn, since he happens to be semi-low on blood, and Crusher's Methusalah
happens to be at a point when he doesn't have many cards (Happens often w/
celerity decks towards the end of the game), all he has to do is say, "Ok,
I'll pay one blood and dodge..." Being able to avoid anything you need to
is a _very_ nice ability.
