White Wolf Announces V:TES Nights of Reckoning Pre-Release Event FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Direct Inquiries to: Oscar J Garza III, Organized Play Coordinator White Wolf Publishing 1554 Litton Drive Stone Mountain, GA 30083 org...@white-wolf.com 404-292-1819 x238 V:TES Nights of Reckoning Pre-Release Event Guidelines Celebrating the latest expansion of Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, now in it's 12th year of play, White Wolf Publishing and the Princes of the Elder Kindred Network are promoting a weekend long series of tournaments and special events globally - all to help players get familiar with the new cards coming available in the Nights of Reckoning Expansion set. Below is the basic information needed to plan your own tourney. What is in Nights of Reckoning?: · A booster-only set of 60 cards, themed on the mortal monster-hunters, drawing from the World of Darkness® classic and X-Box smash-hit, Hunter: The Reckoning™. · Includes 20 Hunter crypt cards, which can be used to build all-mortal decks or alongside vampires in standard decks. · Introduces 7 new "Disciplines" (the Virtues and Edges of the Hunters) · No reprinted cards in this mini-expansion TIME: On April 8th & 9th, Princes will have the opportunity to run a Nights of Reckoning Pre-release tournament. Princes begin by securing a venue and registering the event on the calendar: http://www.white-wolf.com/events/. Product Information to share with your local retailer: WW2726 VTES Nights of Reckoning Booster Display. TOURNAMENT/EVENT SUGGESTIONS: Organizers have the option of choosing the format that best suits their playgroup. Some suggestions are: The 40/40 rule: Format: Since Nights of Reckoning is not a standalone set, the format will require players to bring their own "base" decks to add to the Nights of Reckoning cards they receive at the event. These base decks should have 40 library and 8 vampire cards (average capacity 5 or more). So 40 library cards and 40 capacity of vampires: the 40/40 rule. Each attendee purchases from the sponsoring retailer 4 packs of Nights of Reckoning. These are then booster drafted at the tables. Players must use at least 20 library and 4 crypt cards from their drafted Nights of Reckoning cards. (Obviously you can use more if you want; you can even replace some of your 40/40 premade deck with additional Nights of Reckoning cards if you like. You must have at least 60 cards in your library and 12 cards in your crypt when you're done.) Participants are encouraged to bring multiple base decks and then choose one after drafting their Nights of Reckoning cards. Booster Draft: Booster draft Nights of Reckoning with whatever combination of sets you like or have access to. Booster draft instructions are here: http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/index.php?line=veknRules#sec7.6 Anything you want! If you feel another format fits your playgroup more appropriately, feel free to do as you like. This is not a sanctioned format so be creative! Try and take down Nergal in the final, if you want! AFTER THE EVENT: Let us know how things went. The WW Website will be putting up a news story on the Pre-release events. We want Pictures, Tell us how many people showed up. Who won? What was the most creative combination? We'll draw a name from the post-event reports submitted and send one person a display of Nights of Reckoning. Just to say thanks for keeping us in the loop. Vampire: The Eternal Struggle celebrates its twelfth anniversary this year. Designed by Richard Garfield, designer of Magic: The Gathering®, VTES allows players to pit clans of vampires against one another in a mix of intrigue and action. I suppose it doesn't really matter to me since I probably won't bother going to one of these events, but does this strike anyone else as a terrible idea? Sounds like a great oppurtunity for the kind of min/maxing that draft and limited games are supposed to counter. Why not just play constructed? It's even imaginable (as a thought experiment, though probably not in real life) that someone could bring one copy of every possible 40 card deck and 8 card crypt (it is a finite number) and then build their "draft" deck based on their whole collection, plus a few new cards. Obviously you don't need to take it to this extreme to see how "the bring as many decks as you want" clause is a bad idea, but I did anyhow.

It would be the ultimate test of thinking on your feet AND of your card sorting algorithm. :) Practically speaking, the organizer could easily limit people to 2, 3, or 4 decks (or whatever number), just to avoid any foolishness. - Pat

Doing a little math 60 cards - 20 crypt = 40 library / 7 discipline ~ 5 cards per new discipline

In message <1140666781....@g14g2000cwa.googlegroups.com>, Omael [ quoted text not captured ] That assumes that none of the cards will have three-way options, or similar, which they could well do in order to maximise the potential of the cards. Also, if they're intended to mix with vampires: Nights of Reckoning is a booster-only set of 60 cards, themed on the mortal monster-hunters which includes 20 Hunter crypt cards, that can be used to build all-mortal decks or alongside vampires in standard decks. http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/index.php?articleid=357 there's the possibility of Bloodlines style fallbacks, as well as being able to use them alone. Thing is, in normal V:TES decks, trying to get even three disciplines going solidly can be a bit of a grind. And with only 20 Hunters, you're not going to have great crypt optimization possibilities if you're supposed to be able to put together hunter decks, when they have seven potential Edges to play with. So I'd generally be expecting *something* being done to enable efficient use of a 60 card set. There's also the fact that I'd be expecting to see a few non-Edge cards - a Hunter Headquarters location, maybe a piece or equipment or two with a Hunter theme, a possible mortal (non-Hunter) ally. (Many such games often end up with researcher assistants who have access to University libraries, or financers, or whatever.) Not huge amounts of any of them, but perhaps a handful of such cards. Not that I'd put money on any of the above, or be particularly surprised if something else was done... but I'd expect something to be done to make use of the 40 non-Hunter cards more creatively than just 5 per Edge. -- James Coupe PGP Key: 0x5D623D5D YOU ARE IN ERROR. My Guess: Interplay licensed the rights to make the video game from WW, but probably came up with their own characters, and OG doesn't want to imply a relationship between their intellectual property and the VTES expansion. [ quoted text not captured ] So your contention is that NoR is going to be V:tES - The Un-fun-ening? Xian secretly glad that the X-Box hasn't invaded V:tES

I just thought it made sense to tie the video games to the card game in the press release. I was wondering why that line would be cut. By the way, VTES on X-Box makes no sense. X-Box is for when you don't have enough people to play VTES. Matt Morgan

So the NoR breakdown may more likely look something like this: 60 cards - 20 crypt = 40 library 7 'disciplines' x 4 = 28 'discipline' requiring cards 40 library - 28 'discipline' = 12 non-'discipline' cards (at least 3 of which I'd expect to require just ANY Imbued minion) With this in mind, it makes sense that we may get only 4 cards per 'discipline'/edge, but proportionately this seems about right with the number of hunters. Compare to Bloodlines, the closest precedent set I'd say, where you had an average of 3-5 vamps per clan, with 7-9 cards per new discipline. For those unfamiliar with the HtR RPG, you've got 7 main Creeds, each of which has a corresponding Edge, with your Creed determining your primary Edge path. But all of the Edges from these main Creeds are available to all Imbued Hunters. For example you could have a Hunter with an Edge spread like Visionary 4, Martyr 2, Avenger 2. I would expect this might transfer to VtES as Superior Visionary, Inferior Martyr, Inferior Avenger, assuming they'll have a Sup/Inf scale similar to Vamps & Disciplines. I hope though that they'll stay consistent to the RPG in that Hunter Edges are universally weaker than their supernatural counterparts. So a Lvl 4 Edge, although powerful by Hunter standards, would still seem relatively weak compared to a Lvl 4 Discipline power. If they do this could allow for relatively diverse Edge/'Discipline' spreads on the Hunter minions. The points allocated for them will likely be different because of this as well. While a 3 cap Vamp with a 4 pt discipline spread would be expected to have a fairly significant drawback, such as Zoe, a 3 cap Hunter might have 4 or even more points of Edges, without any restrictive text. This probably still wouldn't be unbalancing though due to both the expected relative weakness of edges compared to disciplines and due to the inherent disadvantages of Imbued minions that will likely exist, with ideas such as treated as Ally, etc, that have already been thrown around before. So my whole point is even if there's only 3 Hunters per Creed (except 1) and 4 cards per Edge, each Hunter will likely have access to at least 2 or 3 (or more?) Edges, making them fairly flexible/playable overall. Then again, all of this is pure conjecture, positive wishful thinking at best, and the reality could be that NoR will prove itself a frustratingly unplayable set and a total waste of cardstock. I just hope that's not the case. ;-)

Would you suggest that the grouping rule be followed or ignored for the pre-release? Having that constraint in place might make for some very tough choices depending on the groups in NoR. Jeff

Grouping should be followed for any constructed portion of any deck (e.g., the 40-cap 8-card crypt in the 40/40 format), and ignore for any limited portion of a deck (e.g., whatever you add to your crypt from drafting in the 40/40 format).
