Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 14:45:36 -0800 From: "Steve Wieck" <ste...@white-wolf.com> To: "'Conclave'" <conc...@list.white-wolf.com> Subject: VEKN Conclave - Draft Policy for Review - 2 Day EC format Princes, Last October we reviewed and then approved changing the NAC to a 3 day format, essentially introducing an extra day to make the Continental Championship a 2 round event. We are proceeding to use this format at Gen Con Indy this year and we’ll see how it works. Speaking further with Gabor and his primogen Tibor in Budapest, it is clear that a 3 day event will not be possible for EC 2005. Therefore we must return to a 2 day format for it. However, rather than go back to the traditional format of Last Chance Qualifier on day one and a huge Championship on day two, Johannes Walch and Stephane Lavrut have proposed a solution that still allows the Championship to have 2 rounds and also for there to be a Last Chance Qualifier. The solution seems good to me, but I would like the Princes to examine it and comment upon it for the next week. We have had many long threads on the Conclave lately, so please try not to make the discussion become ongoing debate between two people. Please state your thoughts on the policy and be done, do not debate or refute other the posts of other Princes. As always if you think any players in your local community have strong feelings about this, ask them and include their thoughts with your own. ------------ Walch-Lavrut Solution (or is that the Lavrut-Walch Solution? hmmm…. The 2005 European Championship (in Budapest) will still be held over 2 days, so its format becomes like this: On Day 1 there will be played both a special Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) and also Round 1 of the Championship at the same time. Players already qualified in previous Continental Qualifiers play in Round 1 of the Championship and players not yet Qualified play in the special LCQ. The top 35 players from Round 1 continue to Round 2 of the Championship on Day 2. The top 5 (the finalists) of the special LCQ also continue to Round 2 of the Championship on Day 2. Those 35+5 = 40 players play in Round 2 and the finals of Round 2 determine the 2005 European Champion. The exact math depends on the numbers of players in each event, but we estimate that a player will have 10:6 better odds of reaching Round 2 of the Championship is they Qualify before the EC and then place in the top 35 versus not qualifying and needing to place in the top 5 of the special LCQ. Since the caliber of players can be assumed to be higher in Round 1 of the Championship (where all players were good enough o qualify) than in the special LCQ, this tends to counter-balance the 10:6 odds. If any player does not show up for round 2 , then a replacement player is taken from the same player pool (for example if only 34 of the top players from the semi-final show up, then the 36th player in the semi-final is moved into the final. If only 4 of the 5 “Last Chance” finalists show up then the 6th player from the Last Chance moves up to the Final). These 40 players go through a normal 3+F tournament to determine the Continental Champion (while the rest play in the loser sideline events!). ------------- Regards, Steve Wieck White Wolf q) whats the scedule for gen con (us europeans need to book flights early) about the system for the ec. this is not going to work in budapest with that many players (with a very varying level of skill). the first day will be a pure seating lottery. also the whole qualifiying system is moot then. why bother about qualifiying. in the extreme case 40 previously non qualified players will play the second round. a two day event was meant to reduce the amount of luck needed to win the ec, this system increases the luck needed to win. if 3 days are not possible then leave the system unchanged. stefan

New information: The Last Chance Qualifier will start promptly at 4pm (1600h) on Thursday, August 18, 2005. The Championships (and corresponding Shadow Twins) will start at noon on Friday and Saturday. And I'll host a Create-a-Clan event on Sunday morning (at 0900), but you might consider that a VTES-free day. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Week of Nightmares planning is already underway. We've been exploring hotel options, and right now we're waiting to hear back from GenCon about getting a room set aside for us for a week at a hotel within walking distance of the con. *crosses fingers* - Ben Peal, US National Coordinator fu...@mindstorm.com

Matt Morgan asks: > No draft? Wait for the Week of Nightmares schedule (no eta as yet on when I'll post it, as we're still working on getting a hotel). There will definitely be a draft, and it will definitely be free. Yes, free. [ quoted text not captured ]

SAC is confirmed to happen during EIRPG (RPG International Meeting) this year again: June 3-5, Sao Paulo, Brazil. From this year on, we expect to keep raising the level of organization and announce the date of the event with greater anticipation. Next year's location will probably be Santiago, Chile; now it's time to move on from Brazil (three editions in a row already...) and share the honor with our hermanos. Preparations are already being evaluated, so I can say there's a good chance we'll announce the date and location for 2006 SAC shortly after June. To boot, we are arranging for foreigners to get free hosting. EIRPG's organizer do close a nearby hotel every year and is willing to help. We had 18 players at the SAC and 41 at the parallel event. We do expect a little more this year, with the addition of the Chilean players who intend to come. I'd be nice to have americans and europeans too. >> Gen Con is scheduled for August 18-21, 2005.
