When Horrid Reality results in a unique weapon becoming contested, I've found citations saying that at the end of combat, it gets burned (or shuffled into library) anyway. But this seems inconsistent with the use of the phrase "if it is still in play" on Horrid Reality. That was pointed out in a thread on May 17, 2000, "Horrid Reality Question for LSJ". Scott wrote then that the discrepancy would be put up for Rules Team review, but I haven't been able to find any subsequent RTR that addressed the issue, and the text on Horrid Reality seems to remain the same. So, what really happens? The 12/12/1995 ruling by Tom Wylie is clear enough that "contested until the end of combat" was the official answer, but that really doesn't jibe with the idea that Horrid Reality "loses track" of the equipment if it's not in play at the end of combat. thanks, Josh hiya ben!

Horrid Reality can track the equipment equally as well as the other "real" copy of the equipment can. Similarly, any effects pointing at a card that becomes contested track that card through the contest. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. It as an illusion after all. Surely if it did contest, the other copy wouldn't come back into play until the controllers next untap phase, and that would SUCK. Marty

Well, sure, it could... if it didn't say that it doesn't *try* to track equipment that's not in play at the end of combat. :-) > Similarly, any effects pointing at a card that becomes contested > track that card through the contest. Doesn't this Horrid Reality interpretation break the normal rule that contested cards aren't visible to any effects that don't specifically address contesting? The other real copy can track it because its ability to do so is defined in the rules on contesting. But you can't Arson a contested location. How is it that Horrid Reality can grab a contested weapon and put it in the ash heap (or library) even though Horrid Reality explicitly says it only grabs the weapon if it's still in play, when clearly, being contested, it is not in play? I'm not arguing in favor of Horrid Reality letting you get a "real" copy of a weapon through contesting, but given how much card text seems to me to point to some other answer, I think there should be an entry on the rulings page for this? I don't know if it came up in a game to inspire him to ask about it, but Ben Peal asked me this last weekend and we could come to no other logical conclusion based on text and the rulings page than that the weapon would be contested "for real". Josh adventure? heh! excitement? heh! a jedi craves not these things...

It's not in the rulings? Hmm. It is now. :-) [ quoted text not captured ]

Real answer: Card text and rulings. Thematic answer: No idea. I can certainly see a case for both cards operating the same way, though - whichever way that is. I'm trying to decide if Horrid Reality + Unique Weapons Not Contesting each other could horribly over-power something, though. -- James Coupe PGP Key: 0x5D623D5D EBD690ECD7A1FB457CA2 Hi!
