2007 North American Championship - Los Angeles
Vampire: The Eternal Struggle Event
White Wolf is pleased to announce that Los Angeles has been chosen as
the host city of the 2007 V:TES North American Championship.
Co-organizer of the festivities, Robert Goudie, said, "For year's
we've been jealous of the excitement that surrounds the European V:TES
Championship. We're thrilled to have an opportunity to bring that high
level of excitement to North America's V:TES players." This is the
first time the U.S. West Coast will host a major V:TES event, and the
location finally makes attendance feasible for some outlying players.
Goudie continued, "We've hosted V:TES players from the Philippines and
other distant areas in the past so we're excited by the prospect of
seeing some travellers from the Pacific Rim and beyond." Mike
Courtois, co-organizer and creator of the Week of Nightmares (a series
of free play and side-events occurring in the days leading up to each
year's North American Championship) said, "Our experience has been
that when we treat V:TES as a top-tier game, the player response is
always fantastic. We've got some big plans for next year and we're
confident that we are creating a unique experience for players."
As the first indication of their grand plans, organizers commissioned
original art to be used in all advertising for the event. Prolific
V:TES artist, Leif Jones, collaborated with organizers to create
something truly special. "We didn't want the usual gothic-horror
piece. Even though the game's theme is dark, spending a week
hanging-out and playing V:TES with a bunch of great people is
definitely not. We wanted something light and fun and that also
captured the special appeal of travelling to play in a great city,"
said Goudie. "Leif's interpretation of our vision was dead-on."
Organizers have announced a website for the event at nac.vtesinla.org

The art is truly great, but is there anywhere we can look at a bigger
version?
Thanks,

Has there been any indication when it will be held?
I didn't see any but I have been known
to miss things. Even an approximate estimate would be
helpful. (like... next autumn for example).

This is just a bad date for me.
Not that I expect you to change your schedule for me. Just it's a
shame that I probably won't be able to make it.

Was there consideration for shifting it at all?
I though that when this year's NAC was announced that both
the date and location were going to be variable.
The reason that I dislike this date is that it occupies
Canadian's Thanksgiving. When this NAC was announced
several Canadians who regularly showed up at GenCon
for the NAC stated that they could not go due to family
committments. While I am a cold-hearted s.o.b. and willing
to miss the family gatherings for one year, its not something
that I feel I can do in future years. I was willing to support the
move away from GenCon despite the additional personal costs but
was very disappointed and continue to be disapointed that it was
and will be on our thanksgiving.
After the date for this year had been announced Oscar emailed at least
some of the Canadians (it may have been the Canadian
princes, I'm not sure) looking for a better date, giving me hope that a
better date might be found for future years. Guess not.
I'm not sure how many Canadians are going to this years' NAC.
Aside from myself I think I saw a name or two from Quebec. Definitely
a far cry from the 10-20 Canadians that have shown up for LCQ
and NACs in Indianapolis in previous years. The reason I bring this
up is that the North American Championship might as well be the
US Championship Part II in a couple of years. (Not sure how
many Mexicans are attending in any given year).
And if you do not have a large non-american contingent for the NAC
then why not put the NAC back at GenCon where more non-americans seem
to manage to make it, and take the US Nationals and have them on Columbus
day.
Admittedly I don't speak for all Canadian VTES players. But right
now it looks like we're not in the equation anyways.

I feel your pain even though I am not a Canadian. We are right in the
middle of fresh pack during October. I am only able to make this year
because there is a direct flight Saturday morning that gets me to
Atlanta in time for the NAC.

I thought you Canadians ate Wild Polar Bear for Thanksgiving. :)

You are correct. All of the Canadian princes were emailed.
To his credit, Oscar did try his best to find some alternative
arrangements -- it just wasn't in the cards. I do appreciate that an attempt
was made to address this issue, even if it was not ultimately successful.
> Admittedly I don't speak for all Canadian VTES players. But right

Without more information, I have to agree that it does look that way.
Additionally, I'm wondering what the process is for deciding on locations
for the NAC venue. I vaguely recall someone mentioning varying from west
coast to east coast, which is also somewhat Americentric (is that a word? it
is now!). To be representative of all three countries, varying north and
south should also be considered, if it is not already.
Might I humbly recommend that White Wolf include both Canadians and Mexicans
for representation in any such discussions? A role for the Canadian and
Mexican Coordinators, perhaps?
Cheers,
WES
P.S. John, maybe we'll get lucky and Harper will change our Thanksgiving to
be the same day as the Americans. It would be consistent with his other
policies thus far.

The reason I dislike this date is your reason, plus it's too damn close
to the dates for the EC.

Because it isn't the location that's a problem, it's the date.

Or move the NAC back to late July / early August, like it used to be.

I believe your concern is important enough that the organizers who can
change the dates, should. This year is already set, but next
year...maybe could change. I would definitely be upset about this if
the NAC remained on Canadian Thanksgiving in 2008.
And if it must be moved, please move it backward, not forward. It's
too hard for many people to take two large vacations and attend two
events less than two months apart.

The only problem with varying North South is that someone "North" then needs
to volunteer. I admit it is not something I am capable of doing and mad
props to
those people who do volunteer to undertake a huge event like this.
Surely there is someone in North Dakota with too much time
on their hands? :)

I'll talk to Oscar more next week at WoN. We're going to need to pay
in advance for the venue (non-refundable) and we want to lock it down
in the very near future. So, yes, it could be changed, but it would
have to be changed soon, and then there'd be no turning back.

Well, Chicago and Detroit both have good-sized playgroups. They would be
sufficiently northerly to be accessible to some players, at least judging by
the GLQ turnouts. Even going to the corners (Seattle or Vancouver, Boston or
Montreal) would work.
However, since the last posted message from me above, for reasons I'd rather
not go into here, it looks like I will not be crossing the border for the
indefinite future. My suggestions stand on their own merit, though, I think.
Good luck representing us at this year's NAC, by the way. We'll save some
wild polar bear for you.

WES

Since myself and Robert have a lot of responsability in putting
together the 2007 NAC we will (MUST) consider the option of moving the
date. It would be tragic to loose that many Canadian friends at our
event, as we think it will be something VERY special and not to be
missed. So take heart your concerns are noted and I will personally
take up your cause with Oscar this week.
I think there is a concern about having it around a holiday, but no
one I know even has this holiday (US) off. Most just take vacation days
from work anyway. So would it be so terrible back it up, say, 2 weeks?
Those that do have it off, does that ONE day really make a difference?
Opinions welcomed.
Thanks

There seems to be a break in the rationale here -- either holidays are
good (in which case falling in with Canadian Thanksgiving is good) or
they're bad (in which case avoiding Columbus day is good).
I think the EC historically falls on US Thanksgiving, and yet (or
perhaps "and thus") some US players attend.
But anyway, yes ONE day really makes a difference. It's a day of
vacation to use elsewhen.
(And, BTW, Columbus Day is a Federal Holiday, so quite a few people get
that day off. Not me, but still.)

Some holidays are probably more "family-oriented" than others. It's
still a good point.

Kind of a different situation here. Canadians are still North
Americans, last I heard. The apt comparison would be if the EC
were continually falling on a date that was problematic for citizens
of some European countries vs. others.

I finally worked at a couple places in California that got President's
Day off. But I have yet to hear of any non-Government-oriented entities
that give Columbus day.

It's also a banking holiday in a lot of places, which affects at least
one person in our playgroup, and a couple others get it off for being
teachers or students, though that's governmental for public schools.

Count me on the other side of "nearly".
Columbus Day is not a Stock Market Holiday, hence my company is 100% open for
business.

After discussing with Oscar, we've agreed to make every effort to try
and move the date. We're trying for either a week earlier or a week
later.

Wow! I guess you can say Columbus Day is effectively a regional holiday
then, if that's true.
(By the way, I was counting banks as "government-oriented".)

Isn't Canadian Thanksgiving always the second Monday in October? I flew
from Atlanta to Chicago, IL and then drove back to Wisconsin all on
Sunday after Day 2 so I could be at work on Monday, despite my flight
being cancelled and having to be put on a different flight. I think you
could have made it back in time for dinner. On the other hand, it would
suck to always have the NAC so close to a holiday that is probably very
important to you.

Damn, I keep forgetting there is a whole word out side of my little

Apon further review.......
Robert and I will focusing on resetting the date to the week after. I
think you are correct in assuming that the use of Columbus day in the
stead of a vacation day might work out better for those who do get the
day off. We are still working on finalizing the best possable venue
with those dates open.
