"Having" A Discipline

Just a few quick questions on what it means to "have" a discipline. (I just want to make sure I get this right). First off, there IS a difference between having a discipline, and being able to play cards of that discipline, right? Thus Ian Forestal only has the disciplines of Auspex, Dominate, and Thaumaturgy. And although he can play cards of all other disciplines, he doesn't actually HAVE that discipline. Thus you can use Kiss of Ra against him and Ian can't block Speed of Thought. But if you play a Discipline card on Ian (like a single Celerity or Fortitude card), then he actually HAS the discipline, right? Similarly, the card Infernal Pact does not actually give the minion the discipline, it only allows one to use the cards of one discipline, right? So if I place Infernal Pact on Smudge the Ignored and announce "I Infernal Pact for Obtenebration," he doesn't actually have Obtenebration and I can still play Obtenebration cards on him (if I want to increase his gen or something). Correct? Although I haven't thought of any practical applications, this also applies to allies right? Akhenaton and Kherebutu may play Necromancy cards, but they don't actually have Necromancy. Ghouled Street Thug can play Potence cards, but doesn't actually have Potence. And Talaq can play Quietus and Thaumaturgy cards, but does not have either one. Is this right? Last of all, I was just wondering what it means with the above allies when it says "may play cards requiring basic (whatever) as a vampire with a capacity of (whatever)." Why is there specifically a clause that says the ally can play cards "as a vampire." Does this have any particular implications? What does it mean? Thanks for any answers you can provide! Halcyan 2

A minion "has" a discipline if it is printed on his card in the lower right corner. Card text (e.g., all discipline cards, Camarilla Vitae Slave) can also cause a minion to "have" a discipline, inasfar as card text uses that phrasing. > First off, there IS a difference between having a discipline, and being able to > play cards of that discipline, right? Since cards that require discpline assume that they will be played by vampires, some of them include references to the "vampire" playing the card and some to the capacity of the vampire playing the card. The text on the allies just tells you how to handle that. -- LSJ (vte...@wizards.com) V:TES Net.Rep for Wizards of the Coast. I know Ian has it written on him, but if you have an infernal Pact on you, you can receive 2 skill cards for the discipline that the infernal pact is granting you, right?
