NAC 2010 location and dates
What are your preferences? What locations and/or dates would enable
you to attend? Would you attend if it were part of a larger
convention like Origins/GenCon/DragonCon/ComicCon? Or would
convention fees discourage your attendance?

They wouldn't.

Seems like some people didn't like the fact that the NAC was later in the
year and couldn't attend because of work or whatever. We should give an
earlier one a try.

I know I am from across the pond, but seeing as around 20% of this
years attendants were european I will chime in as well (from an
european players perspective).
What locations and/or dates would enable you to attend?
During the summer time seems good, or at least earlier in the year
than this one so it doesnt coincide with the EC. Atlanta was fine as
it seems its a flighthub with direct flights from many european
cities.
Would you attend if it were part of a larger convention like Origins/
GenCon/DragonCon/ComicCon?
Definitely. It would actually make me more prone to participate and I
assume it would be the same for others traveling to the event from
other regions.
Or would convention fees discourage your attendance?
No, but such fees would only be a small percentage of the total cost
in coming to the event from other regions. I can see that it might be
different if you just come there from somewhere in the states.

Same with the EC. Indeed anyone in school or responsible for little people in
school wiil find summer many times over more accessible.

For me, it's the time issue, combined with the money issue. Dates don't
matter so much. The further away from Los Angeles the event is, the
more expensive it will be most likely. Airports served by Southwest or
Jet Blue would be best for me personally (Atlanta is not, so made it
more expensive).
If it were in Orlando, I might be able to attend by combining it with a
vacation with my family to Disney World (not very vampire like). Of
course the money thing would still be a challenge.
But let's say money, time, and convincing the rest of the family that I
should take a week away from them to play VTES were all not a problem.
Then...
I actually would prefer it to not be connected with another gaming
event, because then I would be distracted by the other gaming going on.
Inexpensive hotels like Wellesley Inn or the hotel where we had the
Los Angeles NAC are good because they appreciate our business more (free
cocktails for happy hour!?!).
I also like the idea of somewhere off-strip in Vegas (Orleans, Rio,
somewhere Downtown, or Fremont street). Flights are typically cheap to
there, and Kevin M can organize, with perhaps LA crew helping out
(offering services that aren't mine to offer...). Perhaps between
GenCon and Origins - maybe sometime in mid July - perhaps from the 12th
through the 18th. Downside of West Coast is that many folks can't drive
there, and fewer Europeans will attend.

NAC 2010 location and dates
What are your preferences? - My overall preferences are affordability
and good attendance.
What locations and/or dates would enable you to attend? - I would
attend most places whether it be Columbus, Ohio, Vancouver, BC or
Chicago. Hopefully a place that has a little to do and is large
enough for major flight destinations. As for a time of year I would
think Summer would be a better time for some people. If it were
possible to be closer to a part of the city where you could go out for
the night on foot then that would be an added bonus.
Would you attend if it were part of a larger convention like Origins/
GenCon/DragonCon/ComicCon? - I would still attend, but there seems to
be a coziness having just us VTES players in a room. And of course
there is a different mentality compared to being surrounded by Magic
players, etc. Origins was nice, but it was also in a loud environment
and it wasn't easy to go get food between rounds, etc. so while I
still prefer to have the US event there I look forward to an exclusive
environment for NAC. Although the boardgames were fun (it is always
fun to hang out with the VTES players).
Or would convention fees discourage your attendance? - If it were
cheap enough I would not care, but I prefer most of my money go to
reimburse White Wolf, etc.

- Summer is best for me. School is a factor.
- Convention fees might discourage me. That is, when weighing the pros
and cons of taking a trip hotel, travel, food, other costs all play a
factor. If the cost of everything else were manageable, I would have
no problem paying for a con.
- Also I wanted to mention, I did not make it to Montreal NAC or
Atlanta NAC more for the timing of the event than anything else.

Being an accountant month and especially quarter ends are bad (i had
Atlanta booked before starting new job).
Would love to visit somewhere new in US so not LA, Atlanta, Columbus.
West coast isn't too bad as an extra 1-2 hours on a plane isn't so bad
for the lovely pacific.
Just keep it a minimum 6 weeks from EC (so check with Frenchies when
they book theirs...?)

Atlanta because then I can see my non-VTES friends as well.
As far from the EC as possible.
Summerish probably the best time to get some days off.

Possibly.

In the past it was not only convention fees but also overprized hotels
and such. If there is no added bonus from the event being at the
convention, yes I would be discouraged.

If it were late summer (i.e. last couple weeks of August, say), I
could probably make it. Or the middle of July. But then it is
competeing with Big Con season, which would put a hole in attendence
also.
If it were in NY, I'd show up in a second. But then, NYC is likely way
out of the realm of affordable, and I don't know where else in NY
would work (Ithaca, for example, is not much less expensive than NYC
in terms of hotels and the like, so I'd not suggest here ever...) If
it were in the NE somewhere (MA, NJ, DC), I'd also show up in a
second.

If it were part of a big con, and I wanted to go to the big con
anyway, I'd go.

Wohooo! XZaelot & me interested ;-)

The cost is the biggest prohibited to most VTES players, especially
younger ones. This is something our play group has to deal with all
the time.
To best do this, the date of the event should be sometime when the
majority of the players would be able to get the time off or all ready
taking the time off. Possibly a summer holiday. The week of the 4th
of July of instance.
As for location, If it were up to me I would choose a city that is a
airport hub like Atlanta, or Chicago. These cities are also centrally
located will I believe to be beneficial.
As for doing it at the same time as a con such as Origins or Gencon, I
think it would be am mistake. This probably wouldnt keep those who
already come away, but I dont think it will help grow the numbers in
attendance any.
You might consider having it before or after one of the cons in the
same city thus saving the white-wolf staff some travel money and
offering players an opportunity to come early or stay longer of
additional gaming opportunities. However, that dousent really help
increase attendance.
So putting all that together, I think your best bet is to pick a date
in July or August before school starts. Keep using the hub cities, and
have cheep accommodations available for those on a budget.
Thats just my two cents on the topic.
Hope to be able to go next year.

It's pretty tricky to find affordable hotel space in Chicago that's
also accessible and not in the middle of boooring surroundings.. I
wouldn't count on this as any sort of possibility for 2010 at this
point. (2011, who knows...)

I dunno--can Chicago take another devastating rejection?

Is that actually true? Southwest has the best prices typically.
Atlanta is expensive from Los Angeles, even on Delta. Basically the hub
makes travelling on that one airline cheaper, but more expensive for all
the others, I think.

I think if Chicago can get Obama to make a speech on their behalf, it will
actually be impressive enough to work this time. :-)

What about a centrally located southern city like Austin, TX? Austin
is a great city and has plenty of flights in and out. The summer may
be a little hot, but how much time would be spent outside anyway?

The problem is not: "where do we play to reach the most people and
when" but it remains who is volunteering to run and organize such an
event in their city. To my knowledge (admittedly shaky outside
knowledge) there may be one group currently seeking to host 2010.
It takes a fair amount of legwork, time, and dedication to host one of
these things. With an increasingly uncertain return (ie # of players).
Suggesting cities that would be good "fits" is pointless unless you're
volunteering to step up and organize such an event in that city, in
which case I'm sure WW would love to hear from you.
That is I suspect one of the benefits from hosting the NAC at a
convention. 2/3 to 1/2 of your location headaches go away as the
convention supplies the space and even sees to the collection of $$
from players.
Myself I like it at conventions, as there is something for the less
dedicated vtes players that tend to travel with me to do. While
touristy stuff at different locations such as LA, Atlanta and Montreal
is fine, if your significant other keeps trying to drag you away from
VTES to sightsee WITH them instead of on their own its less optimal.
However at a convention I simply need to find an activity that they
are interested in and it all works out.
Away from conventions the lower $$ is appealing, but for me does not
overcome the convention's benefits.
