Something interesting I happened across at:
www.gameplayersnetwork.com
------------------------
The Magic: The Gathering game, invented by Richard Garfield and first
released in 1993, today is available in 52 countries and nine
languages, with more than 100,000 official tournaments sanctioned each
year by the DCIŽ players' organization.
------------------------
100,000 sanctioned tournaments each year.
Compared to the 88 sanctioned V:TES tournaments for March, which
estimates to ~1000 tournaments per year.
Looks like we still have some room to grow.

Mmmm. There is more to that statistic than meets the eye. 'Sanctioned
tournament' in an M:tG sense can and does include 8 player straight
knock-out side events that are run around the clock at major
conventions. As such, US GenCon will see 350+ distinct M:tG tournaments
be added to the DCI database.
If you were very diligent and very bad you could play in nearly 50 such
tournaments over a three day period.
The closest V:TES could get to that would be Rapid Thought 9 player
events with the 3 table winners playing a final. It would be all over in
under two hours which is faster than most constructed M:tG side events
and certainly faster than an M:tG booster draft.
So lets see more of it folks. Whats stopping us from doing it? You'd
need Rapid Thought rankings and TO's willing to organise them at their
tournaments. It would make the TO a bit more cash (charge a
dollar/pound/euro for entry) and give the players not making the final
something to do. It's a good thing in some ways as the field would be a
bit more even given that the top players would be playing in the
constructed event final at the time.
Where's the downside? Lets get Rapid thought rankings up and increase
the number of events run.

Dudde this is a totally great idea. One of the tricky things about
VTES tourney days is that the game needs lots of time. Having shorter
events needing less people is a superb time filler.
Sure, it probably requires a different skillset in construction and
play (I don't know myself, having never had the firsthand experience)
but if it takes 30 - 40 mins to play, then people would learn really
fast!
I'm in. Anyone else?

That sounds like a class idea. I'm in.

I'm up for it.. also I can't see why we cannot try this during a slow
point at gencon, london this weekend in the communal gaming area if
necessary.. has anyone here played many RT games, haven't playind in
any myself?
First my reaction was , NO WAY, jyhad is done for 4 or 5 player.....
BUT, it can be a good format (3 player fast contest) to make a
parallel league ranking in each play ground. You make a ranking
function of the vekn result, then if you want to go up in the ranking
of your playground you have to make a table with 2 guys which are 2
rank in front or behind you, 40 minutes later it is clear.

Statistically speaking:
92 tournaments. There were also 4 Qualifiers in March.
That's twice as many as last March.
That's some growing!

Rapid Thought is a very fun environment to play in! I wouldn't
necessarily want to play in an RT event every time though because it's
a really sleazy, weenie-fied environment and can probably get old
quickly. All my rounds in the RT tournament at the NA NW Regional
lasted less than 15 minutes. The Finals were slightly longer, but not
by much.

Any chance we can get this on the road for Origins? In any case, I'm
interested. Maybe bruise & bleed will make a return again...

We got any other figures on the gaming industry? I'm curious how much
of a market share each has, in board games, rpgs, ccgs. Also, which
games are making profit, and which face termination.

I beg to differ. Sure the vampires are smaller, but they're not de
facto "weenies". I played in and won the first ever Rapid Thought
"Beta-test" tournament at GenCon 2002 with a modified Giovanni
starter. I tossed out some junk, added 5 Diarms and some Wakes,
tweaked the Crypt, and rocked the house! The final turned into a huge
diplomacy battle between myself, Steve Fazio, and one other guy I
can't remember. It took much longer than 15 minutes.

Well, the downside is it is near impossible to get 9 players exactly. What
to do if you are 1 or 2 players short? Or 1 to 8 players over? This is the
detail I can't get around for this format.

M:tG hold "8-player exactly" tournaments (single elimination) all the time.
They schedule a block of time for the tournaments.
Players sign up as they arrive or as they finish tournaments.
When you get 8, they play.
It seems likely that a similar system would work for 9.

IME, they draw numbers and the unlucky bastard that gets cut goes to the

Rapid Thought rocks. I personally would like to see it become a fully
sanctioned tournament alternative.

It would be kind of fun to hold a "single elimination" Rapid Thought
tournament. If you had 12 people, it would be perpetual after the
first round:
ROUND 1
9 players in 3 tables of 3.
3 players sit out for first round.
ROUND 2
3 winners advance to final round
6 losers start a new event with the 3 who sat out.
ROUND 3
3 R2 winners advance to final round.
6 losers start a new event with the 3 winners from R1.
Since the rounds are unlikely to last very long, it would be easy for
people to just drop in and join a quick 2 round event whenever they
felt like it. It could get pretty hairy for the organizer, but it
shouldn't be too terribly bad since there are only 4 games to keep
track of at any given time.

So where did V:TES end up on these lists, or didn't they say? :)

They only list the top 10. Stats at the low end aren't very
significant. I suppose that the adult-oriented games like VTES tend
to sell mostly in blips when a new expansion is printed.

Since a large part of the VTES sales are on the wholesale market, those
sales are not calculated into these top sellers. A good indication of that
is that Yu-gi-oh is outselling Magic. Yu-gi-oh is primarily for children
who don't have the monetary critical mass to buy on the wholesale market,
where as many Magic players do.
Also they are called spikes not blips.

I have a feeling that stats like these are compiled by polling retailers. I
wouldn't be surprised if V:TES sold as much as a quarter to a half of its U.S.
sales from discount distributors and online sources.

Definitely. Most princes I know and any major player within a princes
domain typically purchase via potomacdist or something like that.
I think you'd see slightly different results then... but probably
still no VTES in the top parts.
A good way perhaps to tell how well VTES is doing: look at the total
number of completed sales on ebay.com or something. Sure its an
anomoly (ebay that is) but it may give a better indicator...
