Was anyone else disappointed in the Jyhad/V:tES lack of coverage in the Duelist #5? All there was was the one propoganda article on V:tES. It didn't have any other articles on the game at all, the game wasn't mentioned in the upcoming releases (bad move, which makes the propoganda article look bad), and wasn't even mentioned in the "Deckmaster Errata" section, that was all Magic. I was, needless to say, quite disappointed by this. | If you've got a hot lead on a new | *--Joe--* | PC game, call the announce line at | js...@vt.edu | ** csi...@discus.ise.vt.edu ** | +-------------------------------------+---------------------------------- "There. Yes, although "disappointed" implies a certain amount of surprise. I assume that until they can firmly change the game to V:tES they are reluctant to bring in new people, who may be then be as upset as we to have the old cards obseleted in favor of V:tES. I also wonder how many people at Wizards have a deep interest in Jyhad. Tom's posts to the Magic groups carry the fingerprints of a serious interest in, and heavy play of, Magic. The Jyhad posts carried the fingerprints of somebody just popping off answers to questions (inconsistencies, overlooking obvious rules and errors). Of late that has changed and things have improved but it's still nothing like Magic. If they haven't many heavily interested in Jyhad, then they wouldn't have much of an internal push to get Jyhad stuff published. The "Jyhad variants" article, for example, seemed to be motivated by the [presumably marketing] desire to speed the game, and not from the suggestions of a devoted player growing bored with the standard game. "Background" articles make up a significant part of the Magic stuff. I suspect that contractual arrangements with WW suppress their ability to publish that. A lot of other articles come from the community, but this name change has put some prickliness into that relationship. Would Wizards solicit material from somebody who has flamed them in public re the name change? That would exclude many of the heavy posters here or on AOL. If they wanted to exclude those who had strongly disagreed, or if they have thin skins on the definition of flaming, then basically every heavy poster is out. Finally, remeber the Duellist is a house organ. The primary purpose of a house organ is to make the publisher money. The Jyhad cards are already out there and there's no money to be made pushing them. While with Magic, pushing already printed expansions will presumably help future sales, with Jyhad the issue is questionable. Were I Wizards, having decided to change the name, I would rather that new players started only after the name change. Curt Adams (curt...@aol.com)

Well, there are two sides to publishing Jyhad/V:TES articles in the Duelist. The "pro" argument is that we should be covering all of our games, and giving at least reasonably equal time to non-Magic games. The "con" argument is that face it, the vast majority of our customers play Magic, so the vast majority of the Duelist should cover Magic rather than other Deckmaster games. The end result of this little battle is that while there will typically be some V:TES material in each issue of the Duelist, if there's a lot of Magic stuff that we think should be released, it will crowd the non-Magic stuff out of the magazines. I personally side with the "pro" argument, but am not going to have any real input on Duelist content until #7. Make no mistake: This is not in any way an anti-V:TES stance. I suspect Netrunner will run into the exact same problems, since it won't come close to Magic's popularity either. It's just a question of how to best serve the customer base. I don't think we're likely to hold someone's opinion on the card back change against them when considering potential authors. But we do go for in-house authors first, assuming they can write, and the people here who play Jyhad/V:TES regularly seem to be adequate for the article needs at this time. The Errata section had no Jyhad errata (even though there are still outstanding issues with errata), and the upcoming releases had nary a mention of V:tES *nor* Dark Sovereigns. That speaks volumes more than any article. >I don't think we're likely to hold someone's opinion on the card back >change against them when considering potential authors. Besides, so what if the person has flamed on the net. Very few people (relatively speaking) would even know that, much less have read the content of that person's flames. Tom: Have you guys considered a magazine that covers everything EXCEPT Magic? There's plenty of card games out there (including Jyhad and Netrunner) which are fun to play but don't have as broad an audience as Magic. Scrye doesn't really address this forum since it's mostly a cardlist/price guide. Cliff

[ quoted text not captured ] Check out "Pyramid". It's broad enough that any one game gets only limited coverage, but has great reviews and industry news. While a SJG publication, they are suprisingly fair and broad-minded.
