Hello All,
The JOL 2008 Tournament is now officially complete. Fittingly, Jeff
Kuta won the final with 3 VPs and GW using his Assamite Fatties with
Dominate vote/bleed/multiact deck. It was a good game, and I was the
first one to be ousted. ;)
Poll results:
IMPROVEMENT?
Polled players on average thought that the Kuta Transfer rules would
be a very slight improvement over current rules.
(3.2 average, where "3" means neither good nor bad.)
IMPACT?
Polled players on average thought that the Kuta Transfer rules had a
"small to medium" impact on the game.
FUN?
Polled players on average thought that the Kuta Transfer rules were
just slightly more fun than normal rules.
(3.4 average, where "3" means neither more nor less fun.)
LENGTH of TOURNAMENT?
Polled players overwhelmingly thought that the tournament was the
right length. For reference, it was 4 months with no extensions, and
23 of 30 games finished.
There were two primary complaints with the tournament:
1) Players disappearing, or not checking games frequently enough.
2) Kuta transfer rules aren't the real rules, and it's hard to keep
them all straight.
For next year, if I were to run this tournament again, I would not use
Kuta Transfer rules. Even though I believe that they are better than
the current rules, there is a significant hassle in adding house rules
to the game and getting everyone to remember them. I continue to
believe that this would be a good change to the rules for LSJ to
consider and implement.
Regarding slow/absent players, I would keep the tournament at 4 months
no extensions, but be quicker to react to player complaints about slow
play.
Thanks to everyone who participated!
Ira
KUTA TRANSFER RULES
5 transfers.
Costs 1 transfer to bring a minion from uncontrolled to ready.
Costs 5 transfers plus 1 pool to decrypt.
Note: On the first turn of the game, player 1 gets only 1 transfer,
player 2 gets 2, etc, up to 5 transfers for player 5.
These transfer rules address three main complaints with the game:
1) 1-caps are overpowered, as are weenies in general.
2) Big caps take too long to get into play.
3) Going 5th is almost always worse than going 4th.
There are some drawbacks of this change:
1) It's easier to transfer out, because you can keep building up as
much pool as you want on a minion in uncontrolled.

I was very fortunate to out-talk Ira in the final table, or else he
would have destroyed me with Enkidu Raptor rush. I also stalled in
midgame, but got my steam back just in time.
Here's the deck for the curious:
Modified Multi-taskamites 2008 (originally based on Jeff Kristoff's
version from...2005?)
3x Ur-Shulgi, The Shepherd
2x Thetmes, Caliph of Alamut
2x Yazid Tamari
2x Badr al-Budur
1x Mustafa Rahman
1x Ohanna
1x Royce
4x Grooming the Protege
4x Vessel
1x Alamut
1x The Black Throne
1x The Coven
1x Direct Intervention
1x Dominate
1x Dreams of the Sphinx
1x Giant's Blood
1x Golconda: Inner Peace
1x Information Highway
1x Sudden Reversal
1x Underworld Hunting Ground
1x Yoruba Shrine
10x Flurry of Action
2x Blithe Acceptance
2x Khabar: Glory
2x Govern the Unaligned
4x Kine Resources Contested
4x Reckless Agitation
1x Political Stranglehold
1x Reins of Power
2x Bonding
2x Cloak the Gathering
2x Deed the Heart's Desire
2x Elder Impersonation
2x Faceless Night
2x Foreshadowing Destruction
2x Hide the Mind
2x Lost in Crowds
2x Mask of a Thousand Faces
2x Spying Mission
2x Veil the Legions
4x Blood Awakening
4x Murmur of the False Will
4x Deflection
4x Obedience
4x On the Qui Vive
2x Swallowed by the Night
The deck is solid, but could be better. Never used Blithe Acceptance
or Hide the Mind, though I really like the latter. I found my vampires
running lower on blood than I'd like. I'd probably take those four
cards out in favor of 2x Perfectionist (multi-acting makes it more
likely you'll benefit each turn) and 2x Elder Impersonation (block
fails is just good).

That, and the fact that I was sitting as the prey of a kamikaze
Giovanni power bleed. The combination of block fails, combat ends,
and single-minded forward pressure got me killed. Jeff's backwards
attacks were balanced by incredible cross-table Falcon's Eye + DI help
from Jazz, but it wasn't enough to keep me alive after eating ~3 pool
damage a turn starting on turn 4. Of course, my predator ended up
getting 1 VP then promptly dying. I'm not sure if it would have been
better for him to give me a little rope to go forward against Jeff,
but I ended up taking 0 actions at Jeff the whole game.
To Jeff's credit, he did a nice job delaying bringing up any targets,
and had a nice crypt draw with 2 weenies + Ur-Shulgi. It was a well-
fought game!
Kevin, for your request to post a decklist, the deck I played is
pretty much the same version I played in LA, except the crypt was
legal. ;)

Completely agree, although there is the example of decant, which is to
empty one thing into another. But yeah, something which is less anti
intuitive. I at first glance thought this meant move from uncontrolled
to crypt for some reason...

Sorry for the confusion. If and when Kuta Transfer rules are written
into the official rules, I'm sure LSJ won't use shorthand. :)
If you don't like "decrypt," it's probably best to just use "move from
crypt to uncontrolled."

I think the list is maintained by George Finklang the chap who
designed JOL with Wes requesting additions and removals. I'm not sure
if he is active anymore however, it seems that Wes needs to manually
CC new players in the league and requests for admins on European time
havent seen any response.
Having tried most of the different forms of online vtes I do think
this is the best as it handles gaps in play and players dropping well.
And that happening is inevitable in a 5 player game that takes 2 hrs
to play IRL.
Shame I couldnt get my life in order before this years tourny, I'll
try and play in the next one - JOL is the only vtes I have had for
over a year now - I'm very glad its there :O)

What is the League List? How does one sign up for it? Why would one
sign up for it if one were not involved in a League?
I've looked for pointers to said League list. And can't find any. It
isn't mentioned on the JOL page. The only mention of it I can find
anywhere is buried in the League page where it says "make sure you
send us the right e-mail for the league lst.", although it doesn't
actually say anywhere "Sign up for the league list if you want
information about tournaments and JOL in general!", which seems to be
the case.

And yet even though I'm not on the league, and not on the league list,
all sorts of information about JOL in general seems to be going out on
it, such as the standings of the JOL tournament (which I was playing
in, yet not part of the league, and as such, not on the league list)
and the poll about the tournament (which would have been nice to have
been involved in, but again, as I'm not part of a league, I'm not on
the league list).
I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but really, it is kind of
frustrating to be involved in JOL, and then keep discovering that
there is information floating around that is being sent to people
involved on JOL, yet I'm not seeing it, as I'm not on the League List,
as there doesn't seem to be a way to join the League List without
joining the League, and up till now, had no idea that I should even be
on the League List (which makes sense, as I'm not in the League).

The best way to join the league list is to eamil Wes Weston, he will
cc you on all of his league correspondance and request that George
adds you to the actual list.
Unfortunatly I dont think the list itself has been updated for some
time as George seems to not have time for JOL stuff at the moment for
whatever reasons, so anyone else using the league list (say Ira for
his poll) unless they crib the cc'ing bit from Wes' league emails will
miss newcomers.
Bah - its all a bit silly yes :)

Wouldn't it make more sense to just make a generic JOL list serve
with, like, yahoo or google or something, run by someone who is
actively involved with JOL, and has a pointer on the JOL home page or

Sure would.
While we are discussing this - does anyone know if George expects to
get more interested in JOL at some point? Its very close to a really
good online system - just a few bugs creeping in, such as pings not
working, and a few easy to implement features (I think) would really
take it to another level, and seem to me to be quick wins.
Would he consider making it open source? so other fine minds can

Ant
[ quoted text not captured ]
I actually don't think you can sign up for it if you aren't in the
league. Which begs the question, why aren't you in the league? But
that is perhaps a topic for another day.
Back on topic, your idea to start a JOL yahoo group is a good one. I
have been tempted for quite some time to do so. But haven't. I figured
the League list (I feel like some 80% of english speaking active
players are on this list) contacts most of the player base; and the NG
would contact the rest. Folks looking to start games could do so via
the chat. Also, since I am not an admin, I wouldn't be able to
implement game requests that came over the e-mail list anyway. So it
seems there isn't really a need for an e-mail list.
Peter, you may be one of the few folks that participated in the tourney
without being on the league list. I don't know everyone in the league.
One other point: the tournament used to be run by Andrew "Wes" Weston
(JOL = Ghost). Wes also runs the JOL League. This year, he was not
able to run it, and asked for a volunteer to do so. Ira kindly
volunteered. Ira decided to implement the Kuta Transfer Rules. He also
invited players to participate from here on the NG, which I am not sure
if Wes has done that before. However, since the tournament originated
from the league, I guess that's still how the main communication is handled.
And finally, as others have mentioned, George is actually the person who
adds folks to the League listserve. And George is sort of like an
absentee owner - he is rarely seen, but the day to day processes are
carried on by his managers (admins). So things like the little bugs Ant
mentions up thread, and additions to the league list, happen infrequently.

Likely, but I'm not in the league as I play plenty of JOL without
being in the league, so I figured it wasn't necessary, not realizing
that it was the only way to get information I was hoping I'd get.
> So it
> seems there isn't really a need for an e-mail list.
Except that the League list is apparently standing in for a generic
JOL list. Where things like the tournament standings (having nothing
to do with the League), discussion of tournament rules (having nothing
to do with the League) and polls about the tournament (having nothing
to do with the League) are taking place. Which indicates to me that,
at least on some level, there is a use for a list serve about JOL that
isn't League specific. Which might actually be what the League list
is. But it isn't called that. And nothing indicates that this is the
case.
> Peter, you may be one of the few folks that participated in the tourney
> without being on the league list. I don't know everyone in the league.
That is very possible. Maybe I'm like a one person outlier. But there
was no way for me to know this. And without knowing it, I was not
getting information that I was hoping I was getting.
All of this is easily remedied by me getting on the League list (which
Ira is kindly attempting to do at this point). But still, in terms of
what makes sense, having a generic JOL Listserve that has a pointer on
the JOL homepage seems like a much better plan that having a League
listserve that looks like it is only something that you should be on
if you are in a League, and then have people discover that not being
on the League list leaves them informationless.

I like the idea of a Yahoo Group for JOL, since it stores the messages
instead of just sending out an email, and would be interesting even to
someone like me who does not currently play JOL (although I plan to
get back into it at some point when I find some time and get a game
where they'll put up with me learning the new interface).

You should start one then. Or perhaps a better solution for your case
(and maybe others), the person who organizes the next tournament should
just have a mailing list for those participating in the tournament. Very
easy to set up in every single e-mail program out there.
I guess other reasons for a list include e-mailing out to it to ask
folks to start/join games, and perhaps as a limited pinging resource.

It seems that George Finklang has been super busy lately and hasn't
had a chance to update the mailing lists. For example, I have migrated
my VTES related mails from my pacbell.net address to one at gmail.com.
George hasn't updated the JOL mailing list yet, so I still have to
check the old address for information. I don't believe that Ira or Wes
(Ghost) have the ability to update the mailing list. Kind of a drag.

It should not be necessary. I sent e-mail to the league list because
a lot of tournament players were in the league, and I also sent to the
JOL users e-mail list. I believed that the JOL users list went to all
players with a registered JOL account (since you have to give an e-
mail when you sign up), but either a) you gave a bogus e-mail address
when you signed up (I doubt it), or b) George has to manually add
people to the JOL users e-mail list, and that's not automated as I had
assumed.
I apologize for making that assumption, and I should have also CC'ed
any tournament correspondence to this newsgroup as well. There were
several people who signed up directly from the newsgroup, so I likely
missed other people besides Peter. I'm sorry! That's good feedback
for next year. :)
If you are still interested in taking the poll, I'd be happy to hear
your feedback (any anyone else who hasn't shared their feedback yet.)
It's available here:
http://irafay.com/jol.html
Regarding the idea of a yahoo group for JOL, I think we should just
standby for another few weeks. I've requested list moderator access
from George, so hopefully we can increase the responsiveness to new
people being added to JOL. It really is an incredible system, and I'm
regularly amazed at how much George has created on a purely volunteer
basis. I think we should all remember to thank him, and keep in mind
that it's a purely volunteer project.
For anyone interested in checking it out, it's entirely free and
available here:

Ah, yeah, that seems to be the likely situation (as my JOL e-mail is
my actual e-mail :-). So there was actually a system built to handle
this situation (i.e. a JOL usesers e-mail list), but it kind of broke
down. Fair enough.

Oh, absolutely. The whole JOL thing is fantastic.
Thanks!

Feh!
"Suggesting 'dethrone' is a 'positively-associated word instead of a
negatively-associated word to describe the "doing" of something': priceless!"
Perhaps it could be used thus in a positively-associated way:
"King Edward VIII dethroned in order to marry a divorcee."
I suppose it depends on your view of royal responsibilities and romanticism.
But I gotta say, it's not working for me.

This is all very silly. Why don't you guys just setup a Yahoo groups
mailing list and let people who have time and interest manage it?

Feh?
I didn't suggest it was positively-associated.

Oh noes! The sole example doesn't fit your worldview! :-)
Dethrone means "remove from the throne". And decrypt is being used to mean
remove from the crypt. So I'm not sure how the parallel is missed.
Bob dethroned Edward. Edward was dethroned.
Bob decrypted Igo. Igo was decrypted.
But if that is a stumbling block in your eyes, see also the other see alsos
listed above.

/nitpick Well decrypt does mean remove from crypt, but that does not
definitely mean move from crypt to uncontrolled though ./nitpick

Um. OK. Sounds great.

Is this non-sequitur day? No one told me.

You know, talking about non-sequitur, whats a sequitur?
And if pro is the opposite of con, is congress the opposite of
progress?

Sometimes words just come into being.
Fred, you should know we have used "decrypt" to signify moving a card
from crypt to inactive for over 10 years here in the SF Bay Area.
Apparently this term has started catching on in other parts of the
VTES community as well. Much as you might like a return to normalcy,
it ain't gonna happen. ;)

I'm liking "disencrypt". And honestly, why does the word have to have a
positive spin to it? It's a negative for very likely 2 of the 5 players
at the table, and maybe all other players.

Erm, I don't think it could be quite 10 years, Jeff. Might I remind you
that I was playing VtES in the SF Bay Area - and you weren't - 10 years ago.
My, how time flies!

Yahoo groups suck. Having run one for the last 12 years or so, i am just
sick of the admin interface and the amount of crud attached ot each
email spruiking how good yahoo is.
I'd recommend a google group instead (yes, google groups also does
mailing lists, it's not just a usenet interface).

my guess is b).
I play JOL, I never received anything. I signed on with a legit email
addy. I played in neither the league or the tournament.
