I also assume that Kevin Mergen will be there.
I am so there. :) Hopefully will make it there in time for the Thursday noon
tournament, but that'll depend on my waking up early and driving from Chicago
that morning.

I am here to confirm your suspicions. I even took time off from work. That
will allow me to participate in all events, including Peter's invitational.
I may also be able to spearhead a few trips into some of the poorer
establishments of downtown Columbus.
My roommate/personal trainer/spiritual advisor/brother Will, is going to
be tied down with employment. He plans to show up only when his yet to be
determined schedule allows. Mark Loughman, V:EKN Prince of nearby Newark
Ohio plans to dive in nearly as fully as I have. Many of my local players
are interested, but are too poor to have committed yet. Xian is right, we
should definitely add Kevin Mergen, V:EKN Prince of Madison WI to the list
of "suspects for attendance". Kevin again this year has graciously
volunteered to organize and judge all four Origins tournaments. Without
him, we are nothing...or at least, I get to play much less often. Thank you
Mr. mer-Gen!
By the way, early Origins arrivals are welcome to join the Columbus play
group for our weekly session on Wednesday night 7/3/02. We will play from
7pm to 11pm at the Guard Tower game store: 3600 Trabue Rd. Columbus OH
43204. Contact me for more info.

Derek is presently attempting to wangle the ONE day off required to
attend; unfortunately, everyone and their grandmother has taken that day
off already and it's not a company holiday, so I am presented with the
unpleasant alternative of calling in sick (guaranteed to fool nobody and
WILL get me in trouble, although not fired), or simply declaring that
I'll be gone and have no way around it, and hoping I don't get fired.
Tricky, but I still have an ace left to play.

Origins Gaming Convention
July 4th-7th, 2002
Columbus, Ohio

This is one of the few gaming conventions for which it is worth
travelling. The other two are GenCon and DragonCon.
GenCon - Milwaukee, WI - August 8th-11th, 2002

DragonCon - Atlanta, GA - August 30th-September 2nd, 2002

DragonCon is not a gaming convention - the games are incidental. I'd
put WizardWorld in the same category. Besides Gencon and Origins, I'm
aware of the following gaming conventions (off the top of my head).
Whether they are worth travelling to depends upon your gaming
interests and the programme.
Gencon UK - London, September
Moncon - NJ, March?
Shorecon - NJ, September
Strategicon - LA, February, May & ?
Kublacon - SF, May
Crossroads - NJ, next weekend
Bencon - Denver, May
Essen - Germany, October?
Dragonmeet - London, November?

It is one of only 3 conventions I would travel to for the games.
To me, everything else at DragonCon was incidental.

Dragon*Con is a science fiction, fantasy and horror, comics and art, games and
computers, animation, science, music, television and films convention.
Any single item from that list may be classified as incidental to the whole (or
to the troll :-), yet it is a gaming convention nonetheless. It hosts more games
than many of the "pure" gaming conventions.

Dragon*Con's origins were as a gaming convention. An association named
"DAGR" hosted the first Dragon*Con, many many years ago; the acronym
stood for "Dragon Alliance of Gamers and Role-Players", of which I was a
member.
It has always been, and remains primarily a gaming convention, although
with an inordinate amount of crap tacked on in all directions.

Gencon and Origins have several thousand gaming events in their
program. Dragoncon currently has about twenty. It's a big convention
but that's because of all the non-gaming stuff. So far as gaming is
concerned, it's just a regional con. It's of special interest to the
Vampire fan because it's in White Wolf's home town. That's all. The
VTES events aren't anything special though, are they?

I haven't been to it since it was also the Origins for that year in
1990. That was the only year that I found it worth travelling to. I
thought it was ok but have since preferred to travel to lots of other
cons of various sorts. I still pigeonhole it as primarily an SF con
and its official history confirms this impression.
http://www.dragoncon.org/history.html
I'm not saying that there's anything bad about this. I just object to
Jeff's suggestion that you won't get as good a VTES event at another
regional con like Orccon or Gencon UK, say.

Just 20 gaming events? Wow. The largest local Missouri conventions,
Visioncon and Archon, both have more gaming than that. When a
bible-belt convention with attendance around 1,000 people has more
gaming than Dragoncon, I'd have to go with the "not a gaming
convention" crowd.

If a convention with an attendance around 1,000 does, in fact, have more
gaming than Dragon*Con, I'd be right there with you. But D*C will hold,
if history be any guide, many more than "about 20" events.
Note that what a web site "currently lists" is not on a 1-1 correspondence
to what occurs at the Con.
For example, most, if not all, of the VTES events at Gen*Con are listed
incorrectly or not listed at all on the Gen*Con web site.
For another example, the visioncon website lists a total of 0 game events,
from what I can find. Likewise the Archon web site lists 0 (and says that
the event schedule won't be posted until late August - about 6 weeks prior
to Archon).
What you see on the Dragon*Con is the first events registered trickling
into the web site. Rather than wait until "most" of the events are
in before updating the web site, the D*C staff update it as the events
come in.

Hey, not a problem. I was just going by what the other posters had
said. My knowledge of Dragoncon is mostly limited to stories told by
friends that went for the Live Action games and reading articles about
their recent legal trouble. I hadn't personally seen any indication of
how much gaming it really had, so I chose to believe Andrew. If he was
incorrect, so be it.

Remember that.
~You~ chose to believe Andrew.
He said that he hadn't been to a DragonCon in twelve years (ie, since
1990). What happened 12 years ago has almost no relation to happened
last year, or what will happen this year.
DragonCon could certainly use better web administration and a
professional staff, but their only permanent paid staff are a pair of
receptionists/bookkeepers last I talked to them.
There were more people playing games of all sorts at DragonCon last
year than attended OrcCon in Los Angeles. Both are gaming
conventions. If I were going to spend money traveling to one or the
other, my money is always going to be spent on DragonCon. I have been
to the last 3 of each, so my experiences are current, not 12 years out
of date.

I don't think Dragoncon is worth travelling to and so I don't travel

travel to it, anyway. I'm not the one that's confused here <grin>.

I and many of the Michigan contingent (Noal, AtotheAtotheRON,
SuperBernie, etc) will be at Origins. I cannot play in the
Invitational because I will be LARPing. Depending where they put the
LARP this year I'll probably wander by.
I'd expect Noal, Aaron, Bernie, et al to be available to spar with

I actually did go to Origins before I ever went to GenCon,

I figured I could only do one of them. But this year I've

Is that definite now? You're talking about the Saturday event
opposite the qualifier? It'll be Sabbat War sealed deck? Can
we make it draft instead? Draft is cooler. :-)
I will certainly be in for draft rather than qualifier if we
get enough cool people to also go in on that plan. And as long

Yes, as someone pre-registered to the Saturday 1pm event I would like

He's some fucker who plays around here. We'd let him play more often,
but he keeps playing these weenie decks with Blood Tears of Kephran and
Lucky Blows and other crazy shit.

Yeah. I can't, really; the amounts I would need to spend for
last-minute sudden transport/etc. are better saved for, say, GenCon
(which I CAN get time off for), or, say, the Week of Nightmares even.

The beers or the titties?

Oooooo. Derek, I thought you were definitely out for the "Week" or GenCon. I'd
be great it you could make it to Milwaukee for a spell.

I'm in for the Week of Nightmares, BTW. Hope to see squint-eyed, blurry

Is it that rare? Offhand, I know Orlando is in the club. But I've spent
more time hemmhoraging ones and fives and twenties and -- outside the US
than in it.

Of the few times I've been to DragonCon ('98-'00), it's been pretty
clear that it's first and foremost a sci-fi/fantasy fan con, with the
gaming being secondary. That might not have been how it started out,
but that's the way it is now.
That being said, I've had an absolute blast playing in V:TES events
and non-V:TES gaming events at DragonCon every year I've been there.
On top of that, I've been able to see a bunch of goth bands (along
with Gwar), see lots of hot women in cool outfits, and eat great sushi
and other fine dinners with the V:TES crew.
Yeah, the North American Championships are at GenCon, and the V:TES
there is awesome, but for me DragonCon provides more overall fun.
Seeya there in August!

I just started a contract job, so I won't be able to attend. However,
the contract job allows me to afford GenCon and DragonCon, so I'll
definitely be attending those two.
After your latest shipment of commons, I discovered that I had a
hidden supply of Minion Taps, meaning that I've got a rather
excessive surplus right now. Speaking of which, I have to submit
another tournament request form...Minion Tap: Boston, here we come...
In the meantime, I still need Deflections, Telepathic Misdirections
and Precognitions in bulk quantity.

Depends on how spooky you want to get. There's also a whips and
leather place I frequent. If that's not your thing there's also beer
and gay men at the short north (gay district)... if that's not your
thing there's redneck pool halls, and if not that then maybe some
underground basement concert going? Anyone up for open microphone
stage?
There's a lot of shite to do, believe it or not...

Thanks for the stage thing, but no thanks. Otherwise, pretty much all of the
rest sounds good to me, although it'd be wise with being careful around
those rednecks if I'm to sample the rest :). Do I bring my own leash and
collar? ;)
But serious, a little question you're probably able to answer. Would a
one-day pass get me into both the Qualifier and the Invitational, or would I
need at least a two-day pass for that? Either way, I'm planning to come.
See you all there!

You have gay men who drink *beer*? That's a positive rarity in this
country, *especially* if any of them are under 30.

Regretably, Matt Strehlow, author of "The Combo", will not be
attending Origins because he couldn't catch a ride into Columbus from
Milwaukee with us or anyone else passing through town that we know of.
So Kevin and I will be the sole representatives of the Madison
contingent, and since Kevin's running lots of the events, it will be
just me at the table most likely.
Looking forward to seeing everyone this week!

Just so everyone is on the same page, the Newsgrpoup Invitational is at
11:00 pm on Thursday (7.4) night. Meet in the glass walkway bewteen the
Hyatt and the convention center (the breezeway with all the tables and
people playing Magic for money). I made cool posters this year, and I'll put
them up during the day in the appropriate spot, so look for them.
This event is a completely low key, freely organized situation. It isn't
actually a tournament, and you can play any deck you want or any decks you
want. Mostly, we just sit around, play VTES, crack wise, and test out deck
designs for the tournaments on Friday and Saturday.

That's a bummer Pete, only on two accouts.
1. I'm not going to be there till Friday (my bad)
2. It is 4th of July, which might crimp some other people from being
able to show up.
I'd imagine there will be late-night gatherings on either Friday or
Saturday as well..

If you want to draft, there will be people to draft with at
the Invitational (Thursday July 4 at 11 pm). Of course, we'd
need a source of cards, but perhaps there will be some intrepid
dealers at the convention willing to sell us VTES cards? :-)
