[LSJ] Ablative Skin and Soul Burn

If a Gangrel has Ablative Skin, and gets in Combat with a Tremere who (for saftey reasons buggers off to long range) and plays Soul Burn, can the Gangrel burn the Ablative Skin counters to prevent the damage, or do they count as a preventative measure from a Fortitude Card? ehm the clarification is not on soul burn but on ablative, but you got the point :)
