Hello All, Some time ago there was discussion about a Judge's Exam, purely optional, but intended to help Judges learn more. There has been a website set up to administer this exam, but as far as I know it is not complete yet. I began working on questions last night, and here is my first draft of a few questions. There was also an expresses desire to make it multiple choice, so those options will be added when I get time, as will additional questions. If you have time, please comment on format of the questions and also feel free to add to them. I would eventually like to reach 100+ questions and then break them into easy/med/hard. I also intend to use this "test" on my new players to help them build confidence, Judge's Test Lambach has the Eye of Hazimel and Sire's Index Finger. They are at long range with Matteuz. Matteuz is the acting minion and plays Canine Horde at superior to destroy the Eye with first strike. Lambach plays Thrown Sewer Lid. Can Lambach choose Thrown Sewer Lid as his strike? If he can, does it succeed? What if instead, Matteuz plays Drawing out the Beast and uses the horde to strike the Sire's Index Finger. Can Lambach still use the Eye for Potence and choose as his strike Thrown Sewer Lid? Qadir has changed his clan to Malkavian. Is he now considered Camarilla? Carlotta Giovanni wants to take an action to go to the ash heap and recover a Govern the Unaligned. Does she have to announce the card she wants when she takes the action? What if a minion uses the Sargon Fragment, do they have to announce the card they are going to get? Le Dinh Tho takes the action to look at his Prey's Hand and make him discard a card. Does he get to see the replacement? You have a threat counter and do not control the edge. Sargon takes an action to bleed. He is successful. Can you get the edge for Sargon being successful, burn it to get rid of the threat counter and the gain the edge for successfully bleeding? How many discard phase actions do you have? If you go first, can you get the edge on the first turn? If so, how? If the escaped mental patient blocks, and chooses to use his strike for aggravated damage. Can you keep him from being burned? How? Tariq attacks Stanislava. He uses the rowan ring to send her to torpor. Tariq wants to play amaranth, but Stanislava wants to play undead persistence. Can Tariq play Amaranth? Why? Goratrix is Regent and has Eternal Vigilance. He then merges. What happens to Regent? Is Goratrix later goes to torpor. Does Eternal Vigilance burn? Gabrin plays Sensory Deprivation on Arika. Marcus Vitel calls Banishment on Gabrin. Does Sensory Deprivation burn? Gabrin is influenced back out. Does Sensory Deprivation reactivate? A different copy of Gabrin is transferred out, does Sensory Deprivation reactivate? Garbrin has the Soul Gem of Etrius and a Fortitude Skill Card. He is burned, and a new copy of Gabrin comes out, what happens to Sensory Deprivation? Lucita bleeds and is not Blocked. Her prey has 9 pool. She plays Foreshadowing Destruction at superior. She is then deflected to her grand prey who has 12 pool. How much does she now bleed for? Lucita bleeds her prey says "no block". She is then deflected to her grand prey, who deflects her back to her prey. Can her prey now try to block? Marcus Vitel bleeds his prey and plays spying mission at superior. The next turn he bleeds with a Govern the Unaligned. He is not blocked. His prey wants to play Archon Investigation, and has the pool to play it. He is unhappy, why? Kyoko is untapped. She is unable to hunt. She can take actions. Why can't she hunt? (There are at least 2 answers) Tyler is an Archon and has already used it to rush this turn. She is untapped, can she rush again? Maxwell has Resilient Mind. Arika bleeds his controller and plays Seduction on Maxwell. Can Maxwell burn 1 blood to ignore the effects of Seduction? Muaziz has Temptation on her, played by her prey. She gets Rutor's Hand and burns blood not to take the damage. On her Prey's turn, he burns the Temptation counters to untap and take control of Muaziz until the end of his turn. After using Muaziz to bleed, can he untap her with Rutor's Hand? There are two Anarch Revolts in play. Blythe calls a vote to get rid of the Anarch Revolt. Another minion plays Delaying Tactics. Can Blythe call another vote this turn? Can another minion you control call a vote to get rid of the other Anarch Revolt in play? Arika bleeds. Beast blocks her. She plays Kiss of Ra, and sends Beast to torpor. Can she now play Freak Drive? If she finds a way to untap, can she try to bleed again(her first bleed was cancelled by Kiss of Ra)? Regina is in combat with Muaziz. Muaziz plays Burst of Sunlight. Regina is immune to aggravated damage. Can Muaziz play Rotschrek? Muaziz attempts to diablerize Arika. She is blocked and survives combat. She uses Rutor's Hand to untap. Can she attempt to diablerize Arika again? Can you Entomb Ambrosius? Arika bleeds and plays Lost in Crowds. Her prey plays Direct Intervention to cancel the Lost in Crowds. Can Arika play Lost in Crowds again? Arika plays Govern the Unaligned at superior. Her Predator plays Direct Intervention to cancel the Govern the Unaligned. Can she play Govern the Unaligned again? Your Muddled Vampire Hunter attacks a minion controlled by your prey. He dies. If you play Compel the Spirit to bring him back into play, can he act this turn? How can you get 11 cards in your hand using the Dreams of the Sphinx, assume you started your turn with 7 cards.

David Wilson wrote: One comment is that if there is such a test, there be a way to see the card text for the cards involved, as any judge who had to rule a dispute between them would have the cards in front of them anyways. Looking over the questions after having taken my shot at them, I noticed a few that where more along the lines of "How would you do this?" rather than "Is this legal?" These, IMO, while interesting thought questions, are bad in the format of a judge's exam, since they're more or less irrelevant. "Is this legal" is really what I think the exam should shoot for. These questions are also pretty complex. While that's not bad, per se, I think some simpler ones may also be called for -- the kind of stuff that all us newsgroup regulars now, but might be new to many judges, such as: Midget has a Minor Boon card on him from another Methuselah. Can Midget use Kindred Spirits to bleed... 1) His own controller? 2) The Methuselah who controls the Minor Boon? A Methuselah is given an Uptown Hunting Ground during his untap phase via the Succubus club, while his predator controls Arika. 1) Can he use it this untap phase? 2) Does he have to pay a pool to keep it this untap phase? A Methuselah controls Jessica, who has a Fame card played on her by that Methuselah's predator, and also has a .44 Magnum that was stolen from one of the predator's minions with a Fast Hands. If the predator is ousted, what happens to the... 1) Fame? 2) .44 Magnum? Tariq has used his built-in rush to attack Muaziz. Tariq strikes with a Rowan Ring, Muaziz uses Burst of Sunlight. Muaziz's controller players Rotschreck. Can Tariq's controller play Sudden Reversal? Methuselahs A, B, and C are playing, and each one has two pool. Methuselah A plays a Kine Resources Contested, assigning two points to B and two points to C. The vote passes. Afterwards, how much pool and how many VPs does each Methuselah have? Melisande rushes Spider-Killer. Before range, Spider-Killer plays Illusions of the Kindred. Can Melisande play... 1) Psyche!? 2) Telepathic Tracking? Alexandra hires a Raven Spy, and then plays Freak Drive. Can Alexandra... 1) Hire another Raven Spy? 2) Hire an Owl Retainer? 3) Use the Summoning to get another Raven Spy? A Methuselah controls a minion with an Ivory Bow. Can a minion of his attempt to... 1) Equip with another Ivory Bow from his hand? 2) Use Disguised Weapon to get an Ivory Bow? 3) Use Magic of the Smith to get an Ivory Bow? A Methuselah with an Archon Investigation in hand is being bled for 4 pool. May that Methuselah play Archon Investigation if they have... 1) 3 pool? 2) 2 pool? Stanislava has 1 blood, and attempts a Govern the Unaligned bleed. She is blocked. In the ensuing combat, can she play Form of Mist at superior and burn a blood to continue? If so, what happens? And just to take this test for fun...let's see how I do! > Lambach has the Eye of Hazimel and Sire's Index Finger. They are at long > range with Matteuz. Matteuz is the acting minion and plays Canine Horde at > superior to destroy the Eye with first strike. Lambach plays Thrown Sewer > Lid. Can Lambach choose Thrown Sewer Lid as his strike? Yes, because strikes are both declared before either resolves, so Lambach will still have his superior potence when the strike is declared. > If he can, does it succeed? Yes, assuming he's not knocked into torpor by the damage from the Eye, because the effects of a strike are determined when the strike is played, not when it resolves. See also: Talaq taking agg damage from Burst of Sunlight. > What if instead, Matteuz plays Drawing out the Beast and uses the horde to > strike the Sire's Index Finger. Can Lambach still use the Eye for Potence > and choose as his strike Thrown Sewer Lid? Yes. Lambach is immune to the DOtB as it's played. It doesn't stick around. > Qadir has changed his clan to Malkavian. Is he now considered Camarilla? Yes. Changing clan changes you to the default sect for that clan. > Carlotta Giovanni wants to take an action to go to the ash heap and recover > a Govern the Unaligned. Does she have to announce the card she wants when > she takes the action? Yes. All parameters for an action have to be announced when the action is taken, except for votes and "search your library..." cards. You also have to announce the card you're exchanging from your hand. > What if a minion uses the Sargon Fragment, do they have to announce the card > they are going to get? Yes. > Le Dinh Tho takes the action to look at his Prey's Hand and make him discard > a card. Does he get to see the replacement? No. > You have a threat counter and do not control the edge. Sargon takes an > action to bleed. He is successful. Can you get the edge for Sargon being > successful, burn it to get rid of the threat counter and the gain the edge > for successfully bleeding? No. The edge is given for a successful bleed, and Sargon gets it for a successful action. In this case, those are the same. > How many discard phase actions do you have? 1, unless you have Cicatrix, Ulugh Beg, etc, in play. > If you go first, can you get the edge on the first turn? If so, how? This is, IMHO, a bad question. But anyways, I think the answer is no. Or, at least, I see no way of doing it. > If the escaped mental patient blocks, and chooses to use his strike for > aggravated damage. Can you keep him from being burned? How? Another bad question, but this can be reworded better. Anyways, the answer here is Rotschreck. I would phrase it as, "An escaped mental patient blocks, range is set to close, and the EMP chooses to use his strike for aggravated damage. His Methuselah plays Rotschreck. Does he burn?" > Tariq attacks Stanislava. He uses the rowan ring to send her to torpor. > Tariq wants to play amaranth, but Stanislava wants to play undead > persistence. Can Tariq play Amaranth? Why? Yes, because Tariq is the acting minion and so gets first chance to play cards. > Goratrix is Regent and has Eternal Vigilance. He then merges. What happens > to Regent? Is Goratrix later goes to torpor. Does Eternal Vigilance burn? Regent: Nothing, as he doesn't gain a new title, and there's nothing specifying it burns if he changes sects. Eternal Vigilence: No, because he's no longer Sabbat ("if this Sabbat vampire goes to torpor..."). However, he also can't make use of the card while Camarilla either ("the Sabbat vampire with this card..."). > Gabrin plays Sensory Deprivation on Arika. Marcus Vitel calls Banishment on > Gabrin. Better to phrase as "Can he play it?". But, anyways, the Spying Mission only kicks in if the bleed is successful, after which the window to play Archon Investigation has already passed. > Kyoko is untapped. She is unable to hunt. She can take actions. Why can't > she hunt? (There are at least 2 answers) Bad question. 1) No other ready vampires on the table. 2) She has hunted already, and then played Freak Drive. On her Prey's turn, he burns the > Temptation counters to untap and take control of Muaziz until the end of his > turn. After using Muaziz to bleed, can he untap her with Rutor's Hand? As I have seen repeatedly over the past two weeks. =P > How can you get 11 cards in your hand using the Dreams of the Sphinx, assume > you started your turn with 7 cards. Bad question. But: Dreams of the Sphinx has 2 counters on it, you tap it during your untap to increase your hand size to 9, during your master phase, you play another Dreams and tap it to increase your hand size to 11. Colin, thanks for the input. It is assumed that the Judge will have access to all the relevant card text. I will implement your suggestions, David "Colin McGuigan" <magu...@BGONEspeakeasy.net> wrote in message news:l8OdnZMAaf5...@speakeasy.net... [ quoted text not captured ]

(i.e. Yes Lambach can play it, assuming Matteuz has not played DotB or Terror Frenzy prior to Lambach acquiring the Index Finger and if that is not the case, then also that Lambach does not have any level of Potence outside that granted by the Eye.). Yeah, I realized that (three answers down I reference it sticking around uselessly). Sargon gains the Edge for the action being successful; as soon as everyone has declined to block the action, he should gain the Edge and the referendum would begin (making him an excellent minion for Free States Rant, ironically). In this case, he WOULD gain the Edge twice; once at the start of the referendum, and once from the effect generated by passing the referendum. You get the edge for the successful bleed at action resolution. You get the Edge from Sargon's effect after resolution. So you burn the Edge to get rid of the Threat Counter and then gain the Edge from Sargon's effect. </PEDANTRY> [ quoted text not captured ]

My 2 cents for this is: Make all the answers Yes/No or True/False. It will reduce the amount of time required to take the test, although with a multiple choice test, while it will take longer would provide a better results. or to put it simply, No essay questions. Raille
