When you want to "cancel a card as it is played," can you do something (eg. play card(s), tap card(s) for effect. ) before you do the cancellation? More specifically, can you play "Approximation of Loyalty" at superior after playing "Mask of a Thousand Faces"? For example: (Consider Jack, Jane, Joe, to be Vampires with appropriate Capacity & Disciplines.) I tap Jack to Bleed. My prey plays Deflection with Jane. Joe takes over Jack with "Mask" and play "Approximation" to cancel the "Deflection." (Because Joe has the ability to use "Approximation" but Jack doesn't, for instance.) Is this legal? Mask of a Thousand Faces Cardtype: Action Modifier / Discipline: Obfuscate Only usable by a ready, untapped vampire other than the acting minion who is capable of performing the action. Not usable if any action modifiers or other effects have been used that could not have been used if this vampire were the acting vampire. [obf] Untap the acting minion and tap this vampire instead. Now this vampire is the acting minion. The action resumes where it left off. [OBF] As above, with +1 stealth. Approximation of Loyalty Cardtype: Action Modifier / Cost: 1 blood / Discipline: Presence Requires a vampire with capacity above 6. [pre] Only usable when the action is announced. Choose a vampire with capacity below 7 or an ally. That minion cannot block this action. [PRE] Cancel a reaction card played by a vampire with capacity below 7 or an ally as it is played (no cost is paid). No more action modifiers can be played on this action.

[ quoted text not captured ] I would say no, though I found an old thread the other day that suggests LSJ might overrule me on this. To play a cancel effect, you have to play it immediately, before there is a chance to tap the Barrens, play an Action Modifier or Reaction, before even you replace it. Several cards have "Do Not Replace" clauses as part of their effect, so you should have to determine if a card is cancelled before you have the opportunity to replace it. More to your point, you can't play Mask until their card has taken effect, which means you'd have to play Approximation first. -- - Gregory Stuart Pettigrew
