This is the tentative schedule of VTES events for Origins 2005 (http://www.originsgames.com/): THURSDAY Constructed Event #1: 10am-4pm (2R+F) Constructed Event #2: 2pm-8pm (2R+F) Constructed Event #3: 4pm-10pm (2R+F) Constructed Event #4: 6pm-12am (2R+F) Constructed Event #5: 8pm-2am (2R+F) FRIDAY Constructed Event #6: 1pm-9pm (3R+F) Booster Draft Event #1: 7pm-1am (2R+F or 3R) SATURDAY Constructed Event #7 [NAQ]: 12pm-8pm (3R+F) Booster Draft Event #2: 1pm-7pm (2R+F or 3R) SUNDAY Constructed Event #8: 11pm-5pm (2R+F) Note that the Thursday events are "overlapping". They are set up so that if you play in Events 1-3 and you don't make it to the final round, there is another tournament starting up for you to join. Events 4-5 also cater to the players who make it into town late Thursday evening. I'm trying to get a special *V:TES COLLEGE* ribbon for purchase. Similar to those cool *WAR COLLEGE* guys, if you buy the VC ribbon, you'll be allowed to play in EVERY VTES EVENT for one low price. This way, you'll be able to buy just ONE "ticket" instead of several, and you were going to play in all the VTES events anyway, right? ;) I'll keep you updated on this, of course. Thoughts? HA! I already made my Badge purchase, so I'm completely in agreance with the VTES College thing. I seldom have time to go through the dealer hall, let alone play other games, so for me its an excellent idea. Raille

I agree that this is most definitely a asskickingly awesome setup. After 4 straight years of wanting to come to Origins and then backing out, this is also the year for me. I do have one problem with the set up though. If Thursday is an attempt to break the record for most tournaments held in one day (as was apparently discussed by Jay K. and Trey M. after Origins '04), then we should move it to Friday and start at 12:01 a.m. :-) Peteo

You'd get the Booster Draft people in potentially as well. > SUNDAY > Constructed Event #8: 11pm-5pm (2R+F) Should be 11am, but I can't imagine pushing for more than one event on Sunday. > I'm trying to get a special *V:TES COLLEGE* ribbon for purchase. I would definitely be down with Jeff's suggestion of having draft events opposite the Friday constructed event, and another evening-start event (or two, one constructed one draft) on Saturday. And the "draft Cam-based, draft Sabbat-based" idea would be cool too. Pete's idea of doing the marathon starting Thursday night at midnight (or Wednesday night at midnight?) might be good too, though it does take the hardcoreness of the concept to a level that might not appeal to everyone. :-) Josh with satan at the wheel

The VEKN does not allow 1:50hr rounds, so they'd have to be 2hr rounds. Yep, there will be slack at some level, so the events will be *slightly* later than advertised, I'm sure. We will try DESPERATELY to avoid that, but it is a con, after all. hehee;) >> FRIDAY >> Constructed Event #6: 1pm-9pm (3R+F) >> Booster Draft Event #1: 7pm-1am (2R+F or 3R) > > After a mega opening, only two on the next day? What if they were sufficiently different formats (first > one Cam-type, second Sabbat-type)? The problem lies with several players, including myself, becoming "burned out" during what traditionally has been a relaxing, laid-back convention. So, yes, the insanity is on Thursday, but then to follow it up with more insanity on Friday will, in my experience, burn out the player for the remainder of the weekend. >> SATURDAY >> Constructed Event #7 [NAQ]: 12pm-8pm (3R+F) >> Booster Draft Event #2: 1pm-7pm (2R+F or 3R) > > Do you think there would be sufficient interest in a "Second Chance" > Constructed event here starting at say 7pm (let people get food) going > 2R+F and lasting until 1am? I don't want to dilute the Constructed tournaments with more draft tournaments. I think the two draft tournaments work out fine where they are. It may work out to add another 2R+F Booster Draft on Friday night, though, instead of adding another constructed tournament at that time. As you know, several people drop out of booster draft tournaments after the first round due to bad deck choices, or whatever, so we'll see. > And the "draft Cam-based, draft Sabbat-based" idea would be cool too. I dont know if there is really THAT much of a hardcore issue. The record (as if there's some official record anyway) at stake here is simply number of tournaments. People don't have to participate in all of them, in fact with first rounds concurrent with finals of previous tournaments, it's not really possible for people to do that anyway. Anyone would be free to play in as many or as few tournaments as they'd like. So, provided that you make at least one final during the day, you're gauranteed at least a 4-hour break at some point. The idea is to simply have a tournament going on at all times during a 24-hour span. Four hours of sleep is plenty! Totally doable! Where's your VTES spirit!? Peteo FULL of VTES spirit!

pete...@gmail.com

No one said that you had to run all of them Kevin :-P I'll gladly step in if it's warranted. Or wait, is there some official Origins rule that says that you do have to be the organizer for them? Peteo Doesn't know crap about cons, is a bad bad gamer.

Kevin M.

[ quoted text not captured ] Maybe next year I'll have that much VTES spirit. Understand, too, that I'm not trying to setup the standard VTES convention, here. What I'm trying to do, and try to do every year, is make Origins the favorite convention for VTES players. Each year, I try to make it a *little* bigger and a LOT better. The fact that Origins isn't (and hopefully won't be) the location of the NAC only works in its favor. That allows me to vary what I'm able to do with the number of tournaments, when they will start, etc., and that's a HUGE plus. I'm also taking the player's wants and needs into account. There are a group of about 20 Origins "regulars", and every year I talk to them at least a little about how they liked it this year, what do they want to see next year, how can I be a better TO/GM, etc. They give me feedback (which is how this Thursday insanity came about) and I can then go about fulfilling their deepest desires. Well, maybe not *that* much, but I do what I can. It's a lot like playtesting, trying to run a con in the way that I try to run Origins for the VTES players. There are ideas that get through pretty much as-is: the Tatu's request for a 2R+F on Sunday instead of a 3R+F (due to flight concerns) being one of them. There are ideas that get through but in a modified form: originally, Kristoff & Morita had asked for literally 24 hours of VTES (which I'm unwilling to do) but I was willing to try to create in a similar format, which is how the multiple overlapping Thursday tournament schedule came about. And there are ideas that don't get through: the aforementioned 24 hours of VTES, for example, and the main reason for that is *several* other players have spoken to me about how they want to play but not ****P*L*A*Y**** at Origins. When more than half of that group of "regulars" comes to you literally each year and says "you did a(nother) good job!" the inertia against changing the status quo becomes great. :) > Peteo [ quoted text not captured ]

Raille <rai...@yahoo.com> wrote: > We have a timing issue here! > > When will there be time for the Origins Newsgroup > invitational, which is commonly held on Thursday night? It has been steadily dwindling for the last five years, and I decided to schedule around (or through) it this year with something the players wanted and have been asking for. Also, keep in mind that due to my coordination with the people running Origins (a few friends of mine, hehee) we now have permanent VTES space for the entire con -- the SAME space, for the ENTIRE con -- so using the NGI as a "get together" seemed redundant. > Raille [ quoted text not captured ]

Kevin M.

[ quoted text not captured ] I'm going to have enough to do running everything listed already without having to create a storyline to go along with it. And, with all due respect to LSJ (or whomever created it) I loathe the Rapid Thought format. I suggest you come to Origins 2005 and embrace the coolness of "just a whole lot of plain jane constructeds" and "a few drafts". hehee;) > G [ quoted text not captured ]

[ quoted text not captured ] As I will be the only judge, there is *some* concern, but I believe the generally high level of ethics I've come to expect at Origins will outweigh the players' desires to act like weenies. In five years, only one player has ever scooped and only twice have I had to rule on a deal (and one of *those* times was involving the player who scooped). There was also some thought at the highest levels of WW of creating a t-shirt for me to give to players who played in every event, but I decided against this idea for the very reason you cite. :P [ quoted text not captured ]

But that's just me. :-) Storylines would be cool, but as Fred pointed out, we don't know if there'll be any going on in June/July yet, so it's hard to plan them now. You needn't. Simply use existing storyline formats. The Eye format would be cool imo. Or post a 'tender' for submissions from all the princes/organizers out there that have run their own storyline events and pick the coolest. Of course, you could simply run a storyline event without any special rules, it would be a constructed tourney with the storyline crypt restriction. Well, yeah, except that it's not actually possible to complete every event, start to finish, since the Thursday tournaments overlap with each other... Store hours might mandate that the event starts at 6pm. Details to follow. Please try to show up early and hang out with us. >I'm trying to get a special *V:TES COLLEGE* >ribbon for purchase. That would be great, but I doubt that the Origins folks will let that happen. They have a recent history of gouging the money out of us. Good luck Kevin! Perhaps Mind Numb would be appropriate. Fred

No, for the first tournament, only the final round overlaps with the next, but after that, they start every two hours: 10 am, 2 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm. So you could only play in all of them if you didn't make the finals in the first one and then dropped after the first round in the second, third, and fourth. But you could play the last one to conclusion. And yeah, I would be fine with a Mind Numb t-shirt for the "run back and forth" idea. Or "Rapid Thought". Or "Movement of the Slow Mind." ;-) Josh "psychic projection"?
