OK, so my vamp's in combat with my prey, and I decide to use my Ivory Bow. For her strike, she uses Soul Burn "Strike: 1R damage. This damage cannot be prevented by cards that require Fortitude. For the remainder of this round, the opposing minion cannot inflict damage with weapons." When the strikes resolve, does the Ivory Bow cause damage? If not, then does the last part of Soul Burn's ability only apply to extra strikes? -Saul Resnikoff da...@rmii.com "You are the prisoner of the Phillistines. No. And the last part of Soul Burn's text applies to all strikes performed by the opposing minion with weapons for the remainder of the round, not just any additional strikes. This includes the strike which the opposing minion has declared in the same pair of strikes, unless, of course, the minion with the weapon somehow had first strike(rather unlikely). Alec Chang

In article <32ca8ecb...@news.lava.net>, [ quoted text not captured ] I think that's wrong. 1. The Ivory Bow and the Soul Burn resolve simultaneously. 2. The remainder of this round starts *after* this strike, so additional strikes are effected. If Soul Burn would have been applied with First Strike your argument would be correct. BTW: The same holds for all steal/destroy weapon/equipment strikes. Mmmmmmm...aside from making Soul Burn wallpaper...I think it should work like this: 1. Declare strike with Soul Burn and pay your blood. 2. The side effects of Soul Burn take effect immediately. This is where the "remainder of round" begins. 3. Strike Resolution phase. Even if the Soul Burn is dodged, no additional strikes may be used with the Ivory Bow. See #2. 4. Damage Resolution phase. Soul Burn deals damage. This damage cannot be prevented by Fortitude. 5. Damage Prevention phase. ...Until the round ends. It's a good trade as is. 1 blood to negate someone else's weapon. 1 blood for 1R/2R damage that only negates additional strikes with the weapon, however, is pretty bad. 1 blood for the same with First Strike is too good. -Nathan Harada

I have some questions about these three cards (soul burn, blood rage and blood fury). What happens when the "victim" dodges. Can he still use his weapons? (with additional strike) And as the damage is short range, is the second effect also usable only at short range? Philippe Richer (Bleu)

Dodges negate all of the opposing minion's strike's effects on the Dodging minion and/or his equipment. > And as the damage is short range, is the second effect also usable only at > short range? I don't see on what you base the assumption that Soul Burn's side effect should take effect immediately. And I see a couple of problems here: 1. It is a strike and as such resolves together with all other strikes of the same class as the rules explicitely state. 2. From your argument I deduce (possibly wrongly so ?) that you assume that playing Soul Burn using a weapon to strike happen at two different points in time. This is not the case. At the very moment that you use Soul Burn your opponent uses his weapon. Everything else happens later. 3. Provided your argument would be valid one could argue that the side effect of stealing or destroying a weapon/equipment should take effect immediately and thus prevent your opponent from using the weapon, which is explicitely ruled to be not the case. For me this clearly implies that your interpretation as to how Soul Burn should be handled contradicts with other rulings and thus is to be rejected. > It's a good trade as is. 1 blood to negate someone >else's weapon. 1 blood for 1R/2R damage that only negates >additional strikes with the weapon, however, is pretty bad. >1 blood for the same with First Strike is too good. That totally depends on the weapon your opponent uses, e.g. applied against Talbots Chainsaw this would prevent the Press. Good trade of when in combat with a Tremere who might otherwise Walk of Flamerize you. Also it is pretty effective against Submachine Guns that other- wise might be used with Blur to pump you full of holes. Just because it isn't the "all weapon hoser" that you'd like it to be doesn't mean it is wallpaper. [ quoted text not captured ]

That is not the case. The two resolve simultaneously, unless there's been errata issued for Soul Burn that I haven't seen. While it may be the intent of the designers, it certainly isn't represented by the card text. However, I can't find any compelling evidence suggesting that it was the intent of the card designer. So, unless someone with an official count of how the card is supposed to work pipes in, we'll have to play it as written (that is, the opposing minion's strike resolves normally, a la steal/destroy weapon). -- L.
