The card reads:
"Strike: Destroy Equipment"
and
"Strike: Destroy Equipment with First Strike"
Is this strike a short ranged attack only? It doesn't say otherwise,
so that's how we've been playing it.

the way I see it, a strike only does damage at close range, unless it
has the capital R after the damage number or it says Ranged as with Theft of
Vitae.

Yes. Close range only.
Strikes are only usable at close range unless the strike a) is dodge or
combat ends, or b) says R or something like "usable at range". Shattering
Blow doesn't qualify on any of these counts, so is only usable at close
range. For long range "destroy equipment", try Canine Horde.
