You can't press and keep pounding the torpid vampire (even if you've played Trap or something) cause he's just 'gone.' I'm also pretty sure that no 'additional strikes' can be played once a vampire goes into torpor (someone on the 'net, correct me if I'm wrong..). So, play your strikes so that you do max damage _as_ you send your opponent into torpor cause you won't get another chance during that combat to hurt 'em more! Torpor is a section of the playing area where vampires go to heal; their actions are very limited while there, as are their interactions with the rest of the game. When a vampire goes to torpor during combat, the combat ends immediately, just as if a strike: combat ends had been played.
