Okay, early warning. I am a new player and tonight was only my second game.
My predator played Charnas the Imp on my highest vampire. The card said I
could not attack him as it was played and I had no intercept cards ready. I
also had really bad luck in my shuffle and had no directed attack cards
available for a LONG time. From reading the card it seemed to me that I
should have been able to have one of my other vamps attack the imp to free
up the more powerful character. My opponents all said it required a
directed ranged attack (the ranged attack is per the card). Is that really
the only way to get rid of this imp other than allowing its victim to die?
I find that hard to believe because it effectively destroys whoever it is
attached to if that is the case.
Any help will be DEEPLY appreciated (even if it is simply to tell me that
they were right and Charnas is just a very powerful card).
Thanks in advance!

Correct. The minion who has Charnas cannot harm Charnas.
"directed" ranged attack?
For Charnas to be damaged in combat, he must be damage by the
opposing minion. This is most commonly done with a ranged
strike with combat at long range (so that damage can target
the retainer). Convincing someone you're in combat with to hurt
the Imp usually requires some diplomacy.
Charnas could also be damage by certain actions, like Cryptic
Mission. But again, these (D) actions can only be attempted by
other Methuselah's minions, so some diplomacy is in order.

The best ways to handle this imp are to rarely tap the victim (perhaps
using him as a blocker), use blood gain tactics like 5th Tradition or
Restoration, or to have a Heidelburg Castle ready and place him on a
less valuable vampire (I used HC in conjunction with a Temptation in
jol29 to use the Imp to my own advantage when cursed with him). And
remember that when the owner bites it he gets to give Charnas away to
someone he loves. That can be a MAJOR drawback to the one who played
him since your vampire is now the owner.
