Wake Mariel to end combat?

I've got a question that arose lately during one of our group's games. You have got two vampires out. Gilbert Douane (with Haven Uncovered) and Mariel (tapped). A Brujah comes up and attacks Gilbert Douane due to Haven Uncovered. Is it possible for the Malkavian player to Wake with Evenings Freshness his Mariel and then tap her to end any combat (and in this case prevent the Brujah from attacking Gilbert Douane)? -- Carsten Raufuss (magi...@wombaz.robin.de)

WWEF allows a vampire to '...play reaction cards and attempt to block as though untapped....' It does _not_ allow a vampire to untap, and thus Mariel is unable to use her special ability. Side comment: Were the acting vampire attempting to bleed you instead of attempting to attack Gilbert, AND if you had given Mariel an Animalism Master/Skill card, it would be perfectly legal to use a Rat's warning to untap Mariel (since you are being bled), block with Gilbert, then re-tap Mariel to end combat. Can the damage caused by tapping Mariel be prevented by a Flak Jacket? If so, how about Fortitude damage prevention and/or Sideslip? While I'm at it, can Mariel (or Elysium for that matter) be tapped at the beginning of later rounds of combat? --- Eric Pettersen pe...@cgl.ucsf.edu (NeXTmail capable)

Mariel's ability ends the combat -> no damage resolution phase and then causes damage to both combatants -> not combat inflicted. Hence Flak Jckts, Fortitude, Sideslip cannot be used to prevent the damage. The Anti-Chris(t)

[ quoted text not captured ] Flak Jackets and Fortitude cards prevent 1 damage per combat. Since this damage normally occurs during damage resolution, that is normally when they are applied. But they can be used at any point in the combat, including the point at which Mariel deals her damage. (Or the point at which the spawning pool does its damage). They cannot be used for non-combat damage (Talbot's Chainsaw, e.g.) Mariels damage is combat inflicted. (Tap to end combat and deal damage, not Tap to end combat and then deal damage). -- L.
