basic question on intercept

If I perform an action at +1 stealth, and my opponent then plays enhanced senses for +2 intercept, is his excess +1 intercept still "floating around" in anticipation of me playing more stealth, or does it disappear first. I was just under the impression that one could not play more intercept than was needed, and that the remainder disappeared. My friend insists otherwise, but he has demonstrated himself to be rather lacking in sporting integrity, so I thought I would ask here.

[ quoted text not captured ] You can't play intercept or stealth _cards_ unless you need to -- but the card in question could (in theory) provide an arbitrary amount of stealth/intercept. Any excess does indeed "float around". So your friend is right in this case. -- /\ Jasper Phillips /VVVVVVVVVVVVVV|~"~"~"~"~"~"----------........____ jaz j^^^^^^^^^^^^^\/"~"~"~"~-----------........._____ ~"~--. * http://www.engr.orst.edu/~philljas/ "~"~'--`

He has +2 intercept. If an intercept resource brings him above the required level, he retains it, but cannot go to another source for intercept until he again needs it. (in this case, when/if you get to a total of +3 stealth) > I was just under the impression that one could not play more intercept >than was needed, and that the remainder disappeared. You're unsporting friend has stumbled into being right. ;-) Regards, R. David Zopf guenh...@mindspring.com Atom Weaver

It remains, or "floats around" as you say. You have +1 stealth, he he has +2 intercept, and you must therefore raise stealth to +3 or be blocked. > I was just under the impression that one could not play more intercept > than was needed, and that the remainder disappeared. No. The rule is that you may not play intercept if you do not need intercept. There is no rule against playing more intercept than you need. If you do need an additional +1 intercept, then it is perfectly legal to play a single card or effect that grants you +7 intercept. However, once any card or effect has gained you the intercept you need (or more), you cannot play additional cards or effects just to burn them. Similar rules apply to stealth, of course. Any excess does indeed "float around". Correct. (To be picky: you cannot *add* intercept or stealth during an action with any effect - card or otherwise - unless the intercept or stealth is needed. If any stealth or intercept is needed, however, you are free to use an effect that overshoots the need.) -- L. Scott Johnson (vte...@wizards.com) VTES Net.Rep for Wizards of the Coast.
