GenCon '97 VtES report Sealed Deck (draft) Tourney --------------------------- Format: 25 players, 5 players per table. 7 starter decks per table. Players draft vampires first, then library. The draft is conducted in rounds. Each round, ten cards are turned up, and players take turns (clockwise) drafting one card. Five cards are drafted (one for each player) then the draft is reversed and the last player drafts his second card and the draft continues counter-clockwise. Each round begins with the next player (clockwise) starting the draft. Once all of the vampires have been drafted, the library is drafted (in the same manner). Then players construct their decks from the cards that they have drafted. The winner from each table plays in the finals, using the same deck. In the finals, Robert Dudock swept the table with his Gangrel deck. Ousted, in turn, were: Jim Hogan, Michael Baswell's Ventrue/Gangrel vote deck, Eric Foss's Gangrel/Nosferatu deck, and Christian King's Toreador/Ventrue deck. Constructed Deck Tourney ------------------------ Format: 27 players, three rounds, one final round. Each round was two hours long, and only two games (out of the 17 games played during the three rounds) were closed by the time limit. Five players went on to the final round, determined by their total victory points in the first three rounds. The person with the most victory points got select their position in the playing order first, followed by the second and so on. David Mestre's Malk Bleed deck was the first ousted, giving Christian King a victory point. Chris Salvato's Brujah bruise and bleed deck, Andrew Wyatt's Ventrue vote and bleed deck, and Christian King's Lasombra bleed and deflect deck were all ousted in turn by Willie Clay's Ventrue blood gain deck called 'The Geezers', giving Willie the remaining four victory points. Complete information will be published in a future issue of the Duelist. -- L. Scott Johnson (vte...@regency.wizards.com) Official VtES Net.Rep for Wizards of the Coast. God, but that deck was annoying. I'm glad I didn't stick around to watch that one. Although, if I would have thought to add rush to my damned fortitude/disguised chainsaw deck, I would have shown Democritus the business end of a few nice weapons. I was just blowing off steam because I didn't bother to test my deck before playing it in the tournament. I still think I might have been able to hit good ole' Democritus once or twice...

Do melee weapons inflict "hand damage"? Many melee weapons (bang nagh tiger claws, etc) state specifically in the game text that the weapon increases hand damage. However, some do not (Kali's Fang). Is it a general rule that damage inflicted by melee weapons is considered to be hand damage? I'd tend to think yes, because "melee" means "held in hand." But then when Rake plays Immortal Grapple against Abd Al-Rashid with Kali's Fang, then Rake is still toast... Thanks, Jim

No, it is a categoric rule that weapons inflict weapon damage, which might be based on the vampire's hand damage (or not), but it is considered weapon damage. Otherwise, Thetmes holding that Bang Nakh inflicts three aggro damage (enough to burn vamps a lot of the time). > > I'd tend to think yes, because "melee" means "held in hand." Damage from a vampire's innate hand damage, Scorpion Sting, Undead Strength (not on a weapon), Lucky Blow and so forth are hand damage. > > >Thanks, >Jim -- James Coupe (remove .nospam to reply by e-mail) I think I saw another ship in the sky today. A big white one. I've never seen a big white one. Only six small black ones. Perhaps six small black ones can look like one big white one. Perhaps I would like a glass of whisky. Yes, that seems more likely.
