so i couldn't find anywhere this has been asked... is Special Report a special exception to the normal blocking rules like superior Eagle's Sight? though there is no extra explanatory text, it seems to be that way just by its actual text, and by the fact that it's a master. ------------------------ Special Report ==== Type(s): Master Card Text: Master: out-of-turn Choose a ready vampire you control. That vampire untaps and attempts to block. Once this action you may burn 1 pool to give that vampire +1 intercept. ------------------------ eg, my prey is about to bleed out my grandprey. it is not my turn. i play the out-of-turn master Special Report, targeting a ready vampire i control (the only requirement?) grendel is named. by text, he "attempts to block" as a _result_ of being targeted by the Special Report. it isn't a choice. it doesn't say "choose a ready vampire you control who is a legal blocker for this action." is this rule-overriding card text or not? sure seems like it to me, but i'm eager to hear the official take on it. (also, the recipient need not be tapped, right? you just untap them as part of the card's result, so if already untapped, their tapped/untapped status doesn't change?) raving and drooling, sporepickle "wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream." -floyd

No. You cannot play cards that require you to attempt to block if you are not eligible to block the action. FAQ 3.31 http://www.thelasombra.com/vtes_faq.htm 3.31 Can I use a card that requires me to block, to untap against an action that is not directed at me? No. Cards which require a block attempt as part of their untap effect (2nd Tradition, Eternal Vigilance, Speak with Spirits) cannot be played if your vampires cannot block the action. If you want to block an action that is not directed at you, you must first play an Eagle's Sight or Falcon's Eye before playing a card that untaps you and requires you to block. In other words, you would first have to play a Wake with Evening's Freshness or Forced Awakening, then play the Eagle's Sight or Falcon's Eye to gain the ability to block, then you could use the untap and block cards. Special Report can be (and will be) added to this list as it requires the minion to make a block attempt. Carpe noctem. Lasombra http://www.TheLasombra.com

if i may, i'd like to pick a quick nit here. thela...@hotmail.com (The Lasombra) wrote in message news:<o96dna2Akd4...@News.GigaNews.Com>... > On 17 Nov 2002 10:34:02 -0800, spore...@hotmail.com (spinney99) > wrote: > > >so i couldn't find anywhere this has been asked... is Special Report > >a special exception to the normal blocking rules like superior Eagle's > >Sight? > > No. > > You cannot play cards that require you to attempt to block if you are > not eligible to block the action. (to which lsj simply agreed) isn't it that a _minion_ cannot play a card like this? eg, i have anneke, greger and rake. my prey is (again) trying to bleed out my grand-prey. anneke _can_ play the 2nd tradition to untap and try to block, but rake cannot. greger can't unless he does the wwef/eagle's sight thing first. my nit is that, as an out-of-turn master, the minions aren't the ones playing the Special Report. ME-thuselah is playing it, and i can never be eligible or ineligible to block; this is reserved for minions. and if this point were reconsidered, i submit that the mandatory blocking attempt is a _result_ of the legal play of the SR, which only requires chosing a minion you control. -absolutely certain this won't change your minds, but happy to point out what might be a slight inconsistency, john spinney sporeboy snip// > > Carpe noctem. > > Lasombra > > http://www.TheLasombra.com "girl i'm just a vampire for your love... and i'm gonna suck ya!"-t.rex/jeepster

You must choose a minion that can block, since the chosen minion must block. [ quoted text not captured ]

Ok, interesting. So you need to be able to block the action when Playing Special Report, enabling the block with Eagle's Sight after SR does not work... I guess that makes sense in a way. I assume that Anneke would be able to use SR in the above example, since she has a built-in Eagle's Sight. //Petri

Anyone who can block the action can use Special Report to attempt to block the action. [ quoted text not captured ]

[ quoted text not captured ] Hmm...don't think so If you cannot play it because your minion cannot attemt to block, then you cannot play it when your minion cannot untap (which is the case here: an untapped minion cannot untap)
