(Coming out of my annual Christmas-season torpor - at
least for the time being...)
Hi,
Recently talking to people in our neck of the woods, it
was suggested that we hold a VEKN-sanctioned tournament
which allowed people to preconstruct decks from their
collection but limits the cards they can use. For instance,
to allow only titled vampires or independent vampires in
one's crypt. Someone here was under the impression that
this kind of tournament would be considered a "limited"
tournament (because the selection of usable cards was
limited) and that VEKN was fairly liberal about how
"limited" tournaments were structured.
My understanding was that any tournament that allowed you
to use whatever cards you want from your own collection (even
if the allowable types of cards were in some way restricted) is
considered a "constructed" tournament and that there was only
one type of constructed tournament sanction by VEKN: the one
that allows any card printed, banned list not withstanding.
This definition is as opposed to building a deck with a specific
fairly small *set* of cards that are in some way determined and
at the site of the tournament (e.g. sealed deck, by just opening
boosters or possibly a starter and boosters or draft, by opening
boosters and going through a drafting process), which what I
understood was a "limited" tournament. I assumed the point about
the "liberal policy" concerning limited tournaments meant that the
organizer had pretty much a fairly free hand in determining which
types of boosters and/or starters and how many of each exactly
would be used to open or draft to created each player's material
for deckbuilding.
Which view is right? (Or if you clarify this whole issue, we'd
appreciate it.)
(By the way, I always thought a good suggestion for a non-
standard tournament would be to allow each player to bring a
set number of library cards and vampires out of their collection
with a sheet of paper listing what they contributed. Then
shuffle the cards and pass them out randomly or draft them.
At the end of the tournament, everybody gets their cards back -
with the understanding that, a) you don't *necessarily* get back
the *exact* cards you donated - you might get a worn "Immortal
Grapple" card in place of the mint one you brought and the guy
who brought the worn one might get your mint copy); and b)
tournament organizer is not responsible for 'accidents', such
as with beverages. My choice for numbers would 120 library
cards and 20 vampires.)
Thanks,
Fred
