Would people who are going to be at the GenCon US Week of Nightmares be
interested in playing some Jyhad-set-only games (or perhaps even some
kind of tournament?) on Monday August 16th (as I understand it, this is
the 10th anniversary of the original release of Jyhad)?
For a couple of "going beyond just card set restriction" ideas, perhaps
we could also...
1. Play all cards as originally printed. (Temptation of Greater
Power/Hostile Takeover/5th Tradition/Fame/Drawing out the
Beast/Embrace/Form of Mist/Misdirection/Monocle of Clarity/Pulled
Fangs/Wake abuse returns! Blood Rage requires Fortitude! Concealed
Weapon requires Obfuscate!) OK, so this might not be such a good idea
after all. Unless we wanted to combine it with a short banned list
(Monocle of Clarity at least, perhaps Fame as well).
2. Only allow cards whose text has *not* been changed since the Jyhad
printing. By the letter of this "law" a fairly astounding number of
cards would be prohibited, Deflection, Telepathic Misdirection, Bonding,
Conditioning, and Threats among them. Also Hunting Grounds and
discipline masters. :-)
3. Never mind all that and just play Jyhad-only but with all current
card texts.

You talking draft or constructed?

Could be fun. I don't think Fame would be all that broken in draft. Day
Operation is a rare. Will someone be so lucky as to manage to draft
several copies for an old-style Fame loop deck?

Uh...so what cards could we actually play with? All the "2 hand damage"
vampires would be similarly verboten.

Actually, wouldn't ALL the vampires be verboten?

Hell yes! If it's a draft, I'm in - it would be an incredible hoot.
I THINK I even have unopened boxes of Jyhad starters and boosters (one
each) that I bring if we wanted to make this a draft.
Let me know if I should pack em up.

Good point. None of the Jyhad vampires were printed with the term
"Camarilla." Guess I'll show up with 90 Anarch Revolts.

Might want to pad with a few Powerbase Chicagos if you do.
Or even Ascendances.
Otherwise, if everyone just plays AR every turn at a five
player table, player 5 sweeps. (I suppose there could be
a strategy component there, then, to deciding when to play
the ARs. Might actually be a fun exercise, for small values
of fun).

You could also play with Ascendance. :-)
Yeah, the "nothing that's been altered" might not work so well.
"Nothing that's been functionally altered" might work better but would
add a whole other layer of complication (in terms of
deciding/publicizing what has been "functionally" altered).

I was thinking constructed, but of course draft would also be great.
Maybe even greater. It would, as you point out, make the "card text as
written" idea far more balanced. :-) (I could probably still supply a
substantial amount of sealed Jyhad boosters for drafting, perhaps not
enough for a really large drafting turnout, but I don't think Nate's
boxes are likely to totally run out this weekend.)

Yeah, in draft I think this would be fine. In constructed there might
be substantial brokenness issues, but if it was a short tournament that
might not be too much of a problem?

Sigh, I thought this would be kind of a funny format (constructed, it
would probably suck too much for draft) since a whole lot of the best
cards have had their card text altered at least some. But it sounds
like it wouldn't actually work without a whole long list of
interpretation of what is and isn't a "functional" change to the various
cards, given the vampire problem.

This, of course, is always an easy option. :-) Constructed could be
interesting this way (at least for the 3 or 4 games required) since most
people haven't played in the "nothing but 1994" format since Dark
Sovereigns came out. And I'm pretty sure draft would also be fun; the
original set should be a pretty good draft set, all things considered.

Sweet! Bring 'em. I think I will probably have access to at least 1,
maybe 2 boxes of boosters as well.
I think constructed Jyhad-only could be pretty entertaining (at least
for a day) as well, but I may be alone in that. ;-)

Works for us, so should work for you as well :)
Though our group is still learning new texts about some of the more
obscure (less used) cards.
I wish I could afford to fly over to participate.

Josh,
I'm of course up for this. I think draft would really be the best
format. I may be able to round up some unopened boosters, but I can't
promise if I'll have room on the bike to bring them :)

Michigan draft works fine with 1 box of starters and 1 box of boosters.
You can easily accomodate 20 players (if you manage to get 4 extra
boosters) handing out 1 starter and 2 boosters to each.

Fame is fine the old way.

I find it is great. Does tend to favor people who draw Wakes, Blood Dolls,
Minion Taps and Anarch Revolt. Or just Governs and Conditioning.
But with the Michigan Draft (Restricted Trade) version you can make your
deck better by trading with the people you are about to play against .
We had 2 trading rounds in our 2+1-round tournament, and everyone had great fun.
My 2 Anarch Revolts (both traded in the drafting!) won me 2 games (1
prelim and the final)
We had 20 starters and 72 boosters available, we handed out 1 starter and
2 boosters. We had people trade before both preliminary rounds and we
handed finalist one extra booster before the final.
We used boosters as Edge, and the person who took the GW could keep it as
a prize. We handed out more boosters as prizes to the top3 players and a
booster to the last player in the tournament.
Jyhad is great for Sealed Deck.

Hmm, I suppose, but I really like booster draft better than Michigan
draft. Nothing against Michigan, I just like draft vs sealed + trading.
:-)
Booster draft seems to work perfectly well with 6 Jyhad boosters per
player (as we did it in Glen Burnie MD this past Saturday); I suspect it
would even work fine with 5 per player... at 6 it seemed like the decks
were more "constructed" and/or contained more cards than they "need"
to - I think Jyhad turns out to be so much more focused (with 7 clans
and 10 disciplines) than "modern" sets that you don't even need quite as
many cards to make a reasonable draft deck out of. (5 Jyhad boosters =
95 cards vs the typical-for-me 11 WW boosters = 99 cards; 6 Jyhad
boosters = 114 cards which seems to be perhaps excessive.)

In draft? I expect it is, sure. In constructed, I wouldn't want to see
Fame/Day Operation back in action. :-)

Of course. True in any draft environment, though, and since pretty much
all the power cards in Jyhad are commons, hopefully people don't end up
suffering from too much disparity in how many of the best cards they can
grab.

Most certainly!

Yeah, I'd be for this option.
As to the format:
If you want to run a Constructed game, my cards are fairly tied up and
I'm not bringing my huge box of Jyhad to Indianapolis. So some
advanced warning would be nice.
If you want to run a Draft, I'm in.
If you want to run Sealed, I'm in, and I'm really excited. I've
played in only one sealed Jyhad tourney, and it was one of the most
fun tourneys I've ever played in.
No matter what, though, I'll see you at the Week of Nightmares!

I think this is the only non-headache way to do it.
As to the format:
If you want to run a Constructed tournament, I'd play, but my cards
are fairly tied up in decks (and I'm not bringing my box of Jyhad) and
so some advanced warning would help greatly (if you decide to do this
one).
If you want to run a Draft, I'm in.
If you want to run Sealed, I'm VERY in. One of the best tournaments
I've ever played in was a Sealed.
No matter what, I'll be at the WoN, and if you decide to do something
Jyhad-only, I'll surely play.

On reflection, it seems like by far the easiest/simplest to do, since
presumably everyone is pretty well used to the modern card texts
nowadays. :-)

Hmm. I think it is almost certain that there will be a draft, since we
seem to have some cards available. There could also be some constructed
action, but it might not be a tournament (or if it is, it might not be
on the same day). I would say, bring at least one Jyhad-only
constructed deck if you have any interest in the format, or if not,
don't. :-)

Cool! I have preferred draft to sealed in most of the limited-format
games I've played. But I'm open to doing sealed instead/too, if people
would rather.

We have played several Limited formats in our lpaygroup, either as a local
tournament or just with 5 players joining together in someone's house. We
like to buy some booster boxes on eBay occasionally to have this sort of
fun.
We've found Restricted Trade (MIchigan Draft) to be the most fun of the
options at hand. We played this sort of sealed deck games way before we
even knew it was an actual official tournament format.
It takes up a little bit more time, so perhaps not quite perfect for a
tournament environment, but definetly good fun. Both newbies and oldbies
have a lot of fun in this format. With the newbies trading the rares
sometimes to be able to make the constructed decks after the tournament,
and the oldbies jumping on the good commons so they can win THIS game.
Nyway, it's a highly intereactive environment you get from this, and the
limited cardset tends to balance things out quite nicely in most cases.
It can be slightly frustrating to get the wrong vamps for your cards and
vice versa in any sealed deck environment though, so we sometimes use a
little addition to the Michigan format in which you can trade vamps as
well. You put 4 vamps up for trade besides the 15 cards and you have to
use 2 of them in your deck.
