I have a question for those of you who read this newsgroup:
WOTC's has stated that their official reason for changing the name of
Jyhad to Vampire: The Eternal Struggle is that the name Jyhad is, and I
quote "EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE to a large number of people" (emphasization
net rep's, not mine). Here's my question, in a couple of parts:
1a) Are there any people who play this game, read this newsgroup, and
are followers of Islam?
1b) If you answered "yes" to 1a, are you offended by WoTC and White
Wolf's use of the word "Jyhad" in this capacity?
I will be interested to learn the results of this informal poll. My
current, pre-experiment theory is that if any people at all have
actually complained, they aren't Islamic at all, but rather politically
correct busy-bodies with nothing better to do with their time than
police other people's use of language. I would, however, love to be
proven wrong, since WoTC have offically said that they will _not_
consider changing the name back to Jyhad, no matter how many protests
they receive. If the Islamic community is indeed being offended by the
use of this word, then fine, at least WoTC is not changing due to the
machinations of lingusitic fascists.

My playing partner is Islamic and she has been closely following this
thread concerning their so called reason for the name change. She thinks
the whole thing is hilarious and her family does not consider the word
Jyhad offensive for the game. In fact, when we explained the reasoning
for naming the game Jyhad, they thought it made sense and think WotC is
being oversensitive about the entire issue. Honestly, I think that their
claim that the word is offensive is a complete hoax and just couldn't
think of a better excuse for wanting the name of the game more widely
known to others. In any case, WotC just lost two more customers. Guess
there always is Storm Troopers.

As oppossed to "Vampire", which brings connotations of carebears, Girl Scouts,
and the American Flag...

Just like "Vampyre" is spelled wrong.

Sorta like how Jyhad doesn't have anything to do with the rpg...

It may help the customer pick up and try his first pack, but then after
realizing you can't play Jyhad with a starter pack, will cause him to think
twice about casually picking up a trading card based game...

...at a 25% discount around where I buy comics. Hey, just think how happy
the retailers will be now that their overstocked Jyhad cards will become
even more unsellable.

Nope -- ever since WOTC put the Dragon Engine in the RV Rare slot, I've
been selectively not purchasing WOTC products. Did they put a Flying Man
in a RV Common slot? Heck no, they put in Atog. The only reason I haven't
purchased Jyhad is that I don't like slow games.
WOTC is the new TSR.

That is only part of the reason for changing the name. It has more to do
with the fact that non-gamers don't realize that a game called Jyhad
is about vampires, which is bad. So while it might be interesting to find
out exactly how many people are or aren't offended by the word "jyhad",
it won't have any impact w.r.t changing the name or not.
