Does Tremere Convocation allow Samuel Haight to play thaumatugy cards as though he was a vampire with superior thaumaturgy? Relavent card text. Samuel Haight Type: Ally Cost: 5 pool Unique werewolf with 4 life. 3 strength, 0 bleed. Once each action, Samuel may burn a life to get +1 bleed. He may steal equipment as a strike. He may play cards requiring basic Celerity [cel] or basic Thaumaturgy [tha] as a vampire. Any vampire may call a referendum to make Samuel become Red List as a +1 stealth political action. If Samuel has less than 4 life during your untap phase, he gains 1 life from the blood bank. Tremere Convocation Type: Master Requires: Tremere Unique master. Put this card in play. Tremere get +1 stealth when attempting actions that require Thaumaturgy [tha]. Vampires with basic Thaumaturgy may play combat cards requiring Thaumaturgy as if they had superior Thaumaturgy. Any minion may burn this card as a (D) action; Malkavians get -1 stealth when attempting that action. Comments Welcome, Norman S. Brown, Jr XZealot Archon of the Swamp

[ quoted text not captured ] I would think not. TC states "Vampires with basic Thamaturgy may play..." Sam is not a vampire. His special text allows combat cards that require [tha] to see him as a vampire long enough for him to play them.

[ quoted text not captured ] Initially, I thought that too, but what changed my mind was the global effects of Tremere Convocation. He may play cards requiring basic Celerity > > [cel] or basic Thaumaturgy [tha] as a vampire. Vampires with basic Thaumaturgy may > > play combat cards requiring Thaumaturgy as if they had superior > > Thaumaturgy. He is playing combat cards requiring basic thaumaturgy as as vampire. So in that instant that he is playing the combat card as a vampire with basic thaumaturgy and Tremere convocation allows vampires with basic thaumaturgy to play combat cards at superior. So wouldn't that let Samual Haight/Rafastio Ghoul/Talaq the Immortal play Theft of Vitae at superior? [ quoted text not captured ]

Well, it's simpler than that, really. Vampire or not, Samuel Haight is not anything "with" Thaumaturgy. He can just play cards that require it. Similarly, Ian Forestal is not a vampire "with" Fortitude, for purposes of Kiss of Ra being played against him.

Sam plays Theft using his ability (at inferior, since that is all his ability allows). 2. That play attracts the attention of Convocation, which promotes Sam to superior Thaumaturgy. 3. That promotion allows Sam to cancel the current play (Theft at inferior) and, before losing the attention of Convocation, begin a new play of Theft at superior. As explained elsewhere in this thread, #2 is in error. Convocation, even if it did notice Sam playing Theft, won't recognize him as a vampire. But #3 is also in error. There's no indication of any mechanism that would allow Sam to double-clutch on the card play.
