a basic rule interpretation difference popped up, and i think i need to set the situation. i oust my prey. he sticks around. we go around the table again. i'm holding 2 sudden reversals, watching my new prey intently. he moves blood for his hunting ground. he pauses, thinking.... my old ousted prey decides to take back his jake washington that i'd entranced. i get a proxy and put it into play, but not without some rattling and discussion. i look back to my new prey, and he has a huge handful of cards. i look down and he has a dreams of the sphinx in play, and he's already tapped it to draw cards. i missed him playing it, paying for it, and tapping it to draw cards in a fairly short period of time. the combination of not-quite-stalling and not-quite-quickplaying (seeming opposites) has let him take advantage of some my-fault (talking) and some not-my-fault (card exchange with leaving methuselah) distractions. i say i want to sudden it, because he didn't even announce he was playing the DotS. h e says you don't have to announce the card. so off to the rulebook, and... we both seem correct... (oh no!) his side: "a card is played by placing it face up in the playing area or by showing it to the other players and placing it face up in the ash heap." since he played it face up in the playing area, it was my responsibility to notice... followed immediately by: "the player completely declares the effect of the card when it is played." instead of reading the whole card each time, when i play a c ard, i say what it is and if someone probably doesn't know what it is, i ask them if they know what it is. if not, i either let them read it or i read it to them, their choice. this seems only fair to me, and non-optional, similar to offering a chance t o su dden or block to someone who was momentarily out of the room for bathroom or drink-gathering. if i'd been out of the room, i'd ask what happened, and would get the chance to sudden; in fact, he couldn't have tapped it to draw cards without that option be ing given to me first. to his view, that sentence only means immediate effects, such as targets or amounts of blood from a minion tap, etc. on DotS, nothing like that is required when it comes into play; its only "effect" is entering play, which, again, he says doesn't require "announcement" of any kind. there is also no rule that we could find covering the use of in-play effects requiring announcement. if you tap a DotS and start drawing cards, it's obvious what use you're using. so pay atten tion... - this can come up in a thousand different scenarios. i tried googling, without luck. clarification, please. what is "declares the effect of the card when it is played"? and what is the rule on in-play effects and announcing? - -johnsporee
