I've got a question about the Wolf Companion's damage. Two friends were having
a debate about it and I told them that I would post and try to get a ruling.
One said that the Wolf Companion's damage was strictly at close range, since it
does not say that it is ranged damage. The other says that it can do either
ranged or close range damage since it only says that it does 1 damage during
strike resolution and doesn't say that the damage is hand damage. Which does
it do??? I would think that the damage isn't ranged, but, of course, I could
be mistaken.

According to the official card rulings, damage from Wolf Companion is not
ranged damage, only close. Also, the damage from Wolf Companion is not
considered a "strike", so it cannot be prevented by cards like Dodge.

Wolf Companon says it does "1 damage", not "1R damage", so only works if
the round is at close range. Conversely, Murder of Crows does say
"1R damage", so will work regardless of what the range is.

that's understandable. but the thing about the wolf is that you can't dodge
away from the damage because it is done during the strike resolution. but the
murder of crows is just 1R damage during the round; thus, can this be dodged
or do dodges only work on minions, not retainers?

Neither Wolf Companion nor Murder of Crows deal their damage as a strike,
so a Dodge is useless against them. The damage happens during the
first "resolve strikes" step of a round.
