Section 20. 1 in the V:TES rules handles retainers. Basically, the controlling minion cannot choose if the retainer takes damage. That choice is always the opposing minion, BUT can only target the retainer with a ranged strike at long range under normal conditions. There is an additional note about once the retainer is targeted, damage cannot be circumented by dodge or any other intervention other than damage prevention. Now this raises another question, since most damage prevention cards require the skill fortitude, can these cards be played to prevent the damage on the retainer? ^ ^ | ^ \|/ ha...@shadow.net <---x---> Scott Marcellus /|\ http://www.shadow.net/~havok V | V V

Retainers and Combat Unlike vampires and allies, retainers do not have blood points; retainers have life points. When a retainer is employed by a minion, place a counter from the blood bank on the retainer card for each life point the retainer has. A retainer can only be destroyed (burned) by removing all its life points. Life points can only be removed from a retainer by inflicting ranged damage at long range while in combat with the minion who controls the retainer. First, an attacker uses a ranged strike at long range (see Advanced Combat, Section 21) against the minion who controls the retainer. Then the Methuselah controlling the attacker may choose to apply all the damage to either the minion or her retainer. -- L. Errol..it's just that A.your vampire (and minion) must be at long range. and B.you choose who takes damage between your vampire or your minion and the one you choose takes ALL damage.. If it happens to be more than the minion's capacity, the minion is burned...aggravated or not. (I think this is their handiest use... =) tjcombo rsfa...@mbnet.mb.ca

So this means the Meth controlling the Reatiner can at no point burn his\her Reatainer by deflecting dmg to it? Errol T.

If a minion deals ranged damage to a minion employing a retainer, the minion dealing the damage decides whether or not the retainer takes the damage, not the minion employing the retainer. Tom Wylie rec.games.trading-cards.* Network Representative for aa...@cats.ucsc.edu Wizards of the Coast, Inc.

Only at long range. At close range, the damage must be directed at the opposing minion, even if the strike is a ranged strike.

Errol T

I asked this once but did not get an answer I understand thats how an opposing minion can kill the retainers but can the controlling minion at any point during a combat decide to "deflect" or allow the retainer to take the damage from a strike?? That was what I meant by my original question although I might not have articulated it properly. Errol T.

In article <4nvosd$8...@bert.compusmart.ab.ca>, [ quoted text not captured ] No. Only the dealer of the damage may choose the target of the damage.

I may not have quite the up-to-date info you do, L. Scott, but it seems funny that one wouldn't be able to choose to apply ranged damage to a retainer while at close range. I don't have Jyhad rules on hand, but if you could point out where youfind this or the ruling, I'd appreciate it. I hadn't really thought about that working that way. I just thought that if the damage was ranged, it could be applied to the retainer if desired. However, I've always wondered...I believe that it says that a dodge negates the opponent's strike, but elsewhere, I believe that it says that ranged damage applied to a retainer cannot be prevented. So...does this hinge on the difference between "prevent" and "negate"? or is it just one of those crazy oversights? Christian

In Jyhad, things were diffferent - any ranged damage could be directed at a retainer. This was changed in the VtES rules: From: aa...@cats.ucsc.edu Subject: [VtES][PR] Full Rulebook Date: 28 Sep 1995 09:18:37 +0100 Message-ID: <44dlot$1...@acorn.acorn.co.uk> RULES CHANGES FROM JYHAD TO VAMPIRE: THE ETERNAL STRUGGLE Section 20.1 Retainers and Combat Ranged damage can only be applied to retainers if the round is at long range.
