LSJ: research area, clarification needed

I can see that cards like research and developement define the new term for the game "research area", but such definition seems missing in the new rulebook. Is that a a mistake or just another case of cards defining some rules/terms of their own, without any further reference in the rulebook ? thanks in advance Emiliano, NC Italy
