LSJ is "the official rules authority for V:tES", authorized by the DCI in their annoucement dated 22 June of this year: http://www.dejanews.com/getdoc.xp?AN=365059236 The other members of the rules team are unknown. But I don't think LSJ has any obligation to reveal that information to us, and that non-disclosure doesn't lessen their authority James -- James Hamblin ham...@math.wisc.edu V:EKN FAQ Maintainer http://www.math.wisc.edu/~hamblin/faq.html "We _do_ kill people... that's sort of our raison d'etre" -- Spike

There have been a lot of rumors flying as of late so I would like to ask you outright. Officialy speaking, Who is on the "Rules Team", and from whom do He ( Or They) get their athority ? I would apreciate it if you would clear this up. Thank You -- elw

That depends on how much athority you want to grant to " persons unknown". The only athority that anyone can have over our game is what we chose to give them. Also, I would be interested to know the source of your information. Is LSJ not able to answer a question directed to him ? Are you speaking for him, or is this just some protective instinct at work ? These official rules apply to officially sanctioned tournaments. That's it. To most people, the official rules are almost never applicable to them in their official regard. > Also, I would be interested to know the source of your information. Let's take a look at what James said. JH: LSJ is "the official rules authority for V:tES", authorized by the DCI JH: in their annoucement dated 22 June of this year: JH: http://www.dejanews.com/getdoc.xp?AN=365059236 This is a direct quote with the source given. JH: The other members of the rules team are unknown. This is Ernie's whole point of contention. So I'm assuming he agrees with this statement. JH: But I don't think LSJ JH: has any obligation to reveal that information to us, and that JH: non-disclosure doesn't lessen their authority This is opinion so there is no source necessary as it is defined as James himself. By asking for sources where the sources are given, generally accepted fact, or opinion is argumentative at best. It puts ill light on your intent at worst. > Is LSJ not able to answer a question directed to him ? Are you speaking > for him, or is this just some protective instinct at work ? If you only want LSJ to answer your question, why did you post it to a public forum? By doing so, you make it seem as if you are trying to trap him or be argumentative in some way. His e-mail address is quite readily available if you want to ask him a question directly. I've done it, and he's quite expedient with a response. Officially the "rules authority" for V:TES as recognized by WotC and the DCI is me, L. Scott Johnson (vte...@wizards.com). The Rules Team is composed of a few groups of people who discuss VTES issues and make suggestions (via each groups' liaison). -- L. Well, I didn't really want LSJ to have supreme power over the game in the first place, but since the DCI chose to do so, and I respect LSJ's intentions and his knowledge of the game, I can live with it. > The only athority that anyone can have over our game is what we > chose to give them. If you choose not to play with the rules of the game, then you're not really playing the game. If you choose not to respect the game-makers' intentions for the game (which in turn LSJ is respecting), then no one can force you to do so. The intention of the rules changes which you so adamantly oppose is to make the game better. In that respect, LSJ has taken cards and rules which were thought by many to upset the balance of the game and change them, attempting to make the game better, and hence, more fun. > Also, I would be interested to know the source of your > information. The source of the information I provided is in the DejaNews article I provided a link to. You are welcome to read it yourself. > Is LSJ not able to answer a question directed to him ? LSJ is quite able to communicate of his own free will. My responding to a question directed at him was not an attempt to protect him, rather I thought I could answer your question by referring you to a previous post; something I would do in response to any question on this group. As a "well-respected" poster (or at least a prolific one), I often take it upon myself to answer questions in an unofficial capacity to (a) substantiate the official answer when it comes and (b) give an answer which is possibly prompter or more precise than the official one. > Are you speaking > for him, or is this just some protective instinct at work ? I do not speak for anyone but myself. LSJ does not need, nor has he asked for, my protection. I was simply trying to answer your question. Clearly you didn't like the answer. Those who have the power to grant authority (WotC and the DCI) have chosen to give it to me, not to "persons unknown". If I choose to consult with one or a thousand people, that does not lessen the fact that, ultimately, the burden/priviledge of that authority is mine. > Also, I would be interested to know the source of your information. Then look to the source he cited (to which he was even kind enough to offer you a link). [ quoted text not captured ]

But in an official setting (read: DCI-sanctioned), the official rules rule. :) > Also, I would be interested to know the source of your information. Fire up your web browser, and go to there; also, search DejaNews and you should find a reponse LSJ gave in July (I think) to a very similar question. > Is LSJ not able to answer a question directed to him ? Are you speaking > for him, or is this just some protective instinct at work ? From my semi-lurking mode, I have noticed that LSJ only reliably answer questions/interpretations about the rules (even if somebody else as correctly answered before hand). Other types of messages directed to him (questions about his authority, flames, etc.) are most of the time ignored by him. So, to satisfy the questionner, somebody else usually steps forward and give an answer. Frederic.
